Approaches in Community Development
Various approaches and methods can be utilized in community development. And the approaches
can be divided into 3 forms;
Self-help approach
Emphasizes processes that encourage community members to work together,
collaborate and formulate decisions and actions to improve the conditions in
community.
It institutionalizing processes of decision-making by strengthening relations within a
community to incur change and progress
Conflict approach
The deliberation and confrontation of those occupying positions of authority and
professional officials who are charged with the responsibility of decision-making for
the community.
The goal is to redistribute power
A major organizing tool is to confront to those forces seen as blocking efforts to
solve problems
In this approach, there is a deep suspicion of those who have formal community
power
The perspective assumes that power is never given away that is has to be taken.
Goal is to build a people’s organization to allow those without power to gain it
through direct action. Their strength is it numbers people working collectively.
The confrontation between community members and leaders typically result '
1. Fatigue in maintaining community efforts
2. The loss of leaders and organizers who eventually coalesce with those in
power
3. The su9stainability of financing confrontational actions.
Technical assistance approach
Usually involves the delivery of programs of services to a local area by some agency
or organization
It is often a top- down approaches that involves the use of experts
The focus is mainly on the task to be performed
Assumes that answers to community problems can be arrived at scientifically
If residents wish to participate they must study and understand a great deal of
complex information.
Local citizens are defined as consumers of such development- not participants in it
The most frequent employers of the technical assistance model is government.
A community action plan also incorporates the means and methods of evaluating the efforts and
performance of the community. In this manner, community members can monitor and track the
progress of their action. Broadly, a community action has even phases, namely;
