Legendary Encounters – Alien Deckbuilder EXPANDED Fast Setup Guide

The following symbols indicate setup options that require an expansion:


◈​ Requires the ​Legendary Encounters: An Alien Deck Building Game Expansion​.
◉​ Requires the ​Legendary Encounters: Alien Covenant ​Expansion.
◈​/​◉ ​Requires one expansion or the other.
◈>​◉ ​Requires first expansion, but additional cards are included in second expansion.

▲​ ​Indicates a setup option that increases the difficulty of play. Unless otherwise noted, these
options can be selected independent of each other; the more selected, the greater the difficulty
level.
▼​ Indicates a setup option that makes the game easier.

▲​ Advanced Rule: Hidden Agendas


If you decide that you want to play with the possibility of a hidden traitor, follow ​Hidden Agendas
instructions as you go along. ​◈​/​◉​ Option:​ Agenda cards from any expansion can be permanently
mixed in with those from the core set.

Individual Player Setup


1. Hand out one Player ​Starter Deck​ (7 ​Specialists​ and 5 ​Grunts​) to each player.
2. Have each Player select an Avatar and the corresponding Role Card, the Avatar goes in
front of the player showing Health & Defence, the Role Card goes in their ​Starter Deck​.
◈​/​◉​ Option:​ Avatars and Role Cards from any expansion can be permanently mixed in with
those from the core set.
3. ▲​ Option (Hidden Agendas):​ Perform the following steps:
a. Without looking at them, randomly select a number of ​Good Agenda​ cards equal to
the number of players, plus one ​Evil Agenda​.
b. Shuffle the cards together, and deal one card to each player. Place the remaining
card in the box, without looking.
c. Players may now look at their Agenda cards to find out if they have a good or evil
agenda. Then each player puts their Agenda card face down under their Avatar.

Game Stacks Setup


4. Take the ​Sergeant Deck​, shuffle it and put it, face down, on the Sergeant space in the
bottom left of the mat.
5. Take the ​Hatchery Deck​ and put it, face up, on the Hatchery space, upper right of the mat.
◉​ Option:​ The ​Bloodburster Neomorph​ can be permanently added to the Hatchery deck.
6. Take the ​Strike Deck​, shuffle it and put it, face down, on the Strike space on the mid-right
of the mat. ​◈​/​◉​ Option:​ Strike Cards from any expansion can be permanently mixed in with
those from the core set.

Locations & Objectives​ – Use the relevant ones for the Movies otherwise pick at random
7. Pick the ​Location ​for the movie you’ll be playing through, place it, face up, on the ​Location
space in the mid left of the mat.
8. Pick the 3 ​Objectives​ for the movie you’ll be playing through, place them, face up and in
order 1-2-3, on the ​Objectives​ space in the top left of the mat.
▲​◈​/​◉​ Option:​ Pick the ​HARD MODE​ Location and Objective cards for the same scenario.

Build The Hive Deck


9. Take the ​Story Deck​ for each of the 3 ​Objectives​ from your chosen movie, keep them
separate for now.
10. For two or more players, take the ​Drone Deck​, shuffle it and make a pile of cards, face
down, according to the number of players: For ​two​ players, draw 3 cards; for ​three
players, draw 9 cards, for ​four ​or f​ ive ​players, draw 15 cards. Place the remainder of the
Drone cards in the box. They will not be used in this game.
◈​/​◉​ Option:​ Drone Cards from any expansion can be permanently mixed in with those from
the core set.
▲​ Option (Hidden Agendas):​ Remove a number of cards from this smaller ​Drone Deck
equal to the number of players, and replace them with the same number of ​Secrets
Revealed​ cards. Place the remaining Drone cards in the box.
11. Take this limited ​Drone Deck​, shuffle
it and deal cards, face down, onto
each ​Story Deck​, according to the
green table at right. For example, in a
3-player game, you would place 2
cards on ​Story Deck 1​, 3 cards on
Story Deck 2​, and 4 cards on ​Story
Deck 3​.
12. Option:​ ​▼​ Add an additional drone
card from the box to each story deck;
or ​▲​ ​Add one fewer drone card to each story deck than the green table indicates.
13. ▼​ ​Option:​ The game can be made easier with one or two prep rounds (no Hive phase).
Add one to the ‘Prep Rounds’ column in the green table above.
14. ▲​◈​/​◉​ Option:​ Add an additional ​Soldier-1​ card to ​Story Deck 1​, add a ​Soldier-2​ card to
Story Deck 2​, and add a ​Soldier-3​ card to ​Story Deck 3​.
15. Shuffle ​Story Deck 3​, and place it, face down, on the Hive space at upper right of the mat.
16. Shuffle ​Story Deck 2​, and place it, face down, on top of ​Story Deck 3​.
17. Shuffle ​Story Deck 1​, and place it, face down, on top of ​Story Deck 2​.

Build the Barracks


18. Take any 4 ​Character Decks​, shuffle them together, and place them face down on the
Barracks in the lower right of the mat. Draw 5 cards and place them face up in the HQ.
▲​ ​◈​ Option: ​If using ​Queen Mother Mode​ (see page 3), take 2 additional ​Character
Decks​, for 6 total.

▲​ Option - ​Add a hive card to the complex for each desired degree of increased difficulty

▲​ Advanced Rule: Alien Player


If you decide that you want a player killed by a chestburster to become an ​Alien Player​, ensure
that the ​Alien Avatar​ cards and ​Alien Player​ deck are within reach, but not where they might be
confused with other decks.
▲​◈​ Option:​ ​Queen Mother Mode​ (1 vs. Many).

Choose one player to be the ​Queen Mother​. All other players proceed with ​Standard
Cooperative Mode​ setup, changing step ​18, ​as indicated above.

◈>​◉ ​Option:​ You may also now play as ​David​ instead of the Queen Mother. The gameplay is the
same except you’ll use David’s Avatar, starting cards, one of his role cards, and one of his Enemy
cards instead.

The ​Queen Mother​ performs the following setup steps:


1. That player takes the playmat, 56-card Nest, and 12 Starting Cards.
◉ ​Option:​ The Neomorph is a new character group for the Queen Mother’s Nest. You may
replace one of the original four character groups with the Neomorph’s 14 cards.
◉ ​Option:​ If playing as David, replace the Queen Mother’s starting cards with David’s
starting cards.
2. Place the Queen Mother’s ​Avatar​ on its space and add one of the four different ​Role​ cards
to the starting deck. (Random or by choice.)
◉ ​Option:​ If playing as David, replace the ​Queen Mother​ Avatar with the ​David​ Avatar,
and the Queen Mother’s role cards with David’s role cards.
3. Secretly place (random or by choice) one of the four ​Alien Queen Mother Enemy​ cards
face-down underneath where the ​Hive​ will go. (Note: The four Queen Mother / David Role
and Enemy cards are not linked. You can use any Role card with any Enemy card.)
◉ ​Option:​ If playing as David, place one of ​David​’s enemy cards on your Hive space
instead.
4. Shuffle the Nest and deal out five cards face-up into the Lair.

The Human Player to the Queen Mother’s left goes first, allowing each Human Player to go
before the Queen Mother’s first turn.
