Operating Specifications
Connection Instructions A safe and trouble-free operation of the inverter is warranted only when the connection
instructions listed below are observed:
If deviations from these specifications occur it can cause in particular cases
malfunctions and damages.
Fault Current Protective Switch (FI) • For frequency inverters with 3-phase input voltage the direct component in the fault
current can prevent the triggering of the FI-protective swtich. For that reason a FI-
protective wiring as sole protective measure is not permitted according to VDE 0160.
Additional safety precautions like e.g. protective separation or protective multiple
earthing are required. But it is not allowed to have protective multiple earthing at the
output of the frequency inverter.
• The FI-protective switch must correspond to the latest design in conformity with DIN
VDE 0664.
• The tripping current shall be 200 mA or more, to prevent premature tripping through
discharge currents of the inverter.
• Exception:
For frequency inverters with 1-phase input voltage (L, N) it is permitted to use FI-
protective switches as sole protection, if the switch corresponds to the new design
according to DIN VDE 0664.
Motor Protection Motor protective switches or motor protective relays offer only conditional protection for
inverter operation and in individual cases they can cause malfunctions.
Optional the KEB COMBIVERT is available with PTC evaluation. Up to 3 PTC thermistors
⊥ or OH/OH.
are connected to the terminals OH/⊥
With regard to PTC evaluation the terminal connections are affected by mains potential.
E 24
Operating Specifications
Interference Suppression of The control and power inputs of the frequency inverter are protected against interferences.
Frequency Inverter
Following measures provide a higher operational reliability of the unit and additional
protection against malfunctions.
• Use mains filter when the mains voltage is affected by the connection of large
consumers (reactive-power compensation equipment, welding equipment, HF
furnaces, electromagnetic chucks etc.)
• Protective wiring of inductive consumers (solenoid valves, relays, electromagnets)
with RC elements or similar devices to absorb the energy released at switch-off.
Interference Suppression of Electric The frequency inverter KEB COMBIVERT transmits electromagnetic waves of high
Plants frequency. The measures listed below can reduce the arising interference pulses that
have a disturbing effect on electric plants in the vicinity of the inverter,
Operating Directions • Install a circuit interrupter between voltage supply and frequency inverter to permit the
independent switch-off of KEB COMBIVERT.
• With regard to single drives avoid the switching between motor and KEB COMBIVERT
during operation as it can lead to the activation of the protective devices of the
frequency inverter. If the switching cannot be eliminated contact KEB to discuss
protective measures.
For multimotor drives the connection or disconnection is permitted when at least 1
motor is running during the switching process. The frequency inverter must be
dimensioned for the arising starting currents.
• If the motor is still running at a restart (power on) of KEB COMBIVERT (e.g. due to large
centrifugal mass) the function speed search or DC-braking must be activated.
• When switching between motor and frequency inverter the function speed search must
be activated. Only after the motor relay is closed the function may be initiated.
• Frequent switching between mains and frequency inverter is not permitted.
To prevent premature ageing or destruction of the KEB COMBIVERT observe the above
directions.

The heating up of the motor is greater during inverter operation than during mains
operation.
Characteristic 1 The output power of a three-phase motor with KEB COMBIVERT (here applies torque
characteristic c). Above the rated motor frequency the available torque and power are
within the range of the shown curves.
During starting and operation the load on the motor can reach for a short time 1.5times
its rated torque. The frequency inverter is to be dimensioned for the increased motor
current.
E 26
Accessories
Braking Module KEB COMBIVERT equipped with a braking module is suitable for a limited 4-quadrant
operation. The braking energy that is refed into the intermediate circuit during regenera-
tive operation is dissipated by means of the braking module (braking chopper and braking
resistor). Dependent on unit size and voltage class it can be installed internally or
externally.
The braking resistor heats up during braking. If braking resistor and KEB COMBIVERT are
installed in a control cabinent sufficient cooling of the control cabinet interior must be
provided and an adequate distance to the KEB COMBIVERT must be observed. Do not
install the braking resistor below the frequency inverter.!
External Braking Resistor - Sizes 10—13, 200 V Class and 07—23, 400 V Class
The control electronics is installed inside the KEB COMBIVERT, the braking resistor is
mounted beside of above the frequency inverter. The braking resistor is available up to
size 15 in two designs,
• with porcelain terminal
• with thermal overcurrent relay.
From size 16 upwards the connection is done with steatite terminals or stud terminals.
4. Calculate the braking torque (MB). For the calculation take into account the load torque.
5. Calculate the peak braking power (PB). The peak braking power shall always be
calculated for the worst situation (nmax ∅ standstill).
6. Selection of braking resistor:
a) PR ¯ PB
b) PN is to be selected according to the cyclic duration factor c.d.f.
The braking resistors are to be used only for the specified unit sizes. The maximum
cyclic duration factor of the braking resistor shall not be exceeded.
6 % c.d.f. = maximum braking time 8 s
25 % c.d.f. = maximum braking time 30 s
40 % c.d.f. = maximum braking time 48 s
Longer ON periods require special-designed braking resistors. Take into account the
continuous output of the chopper transistor.
7. Ckeck, whether the desired braking time is attained with the braking module (tBmin *).
Restriction:
Considering the capacity of the braking module and the braking capacity of the motor
the braking torque shall not exceed the rated torque of the motor by more than 1.5times
(see formula).
To utilize the maximum possible braking torque the frequency inverter must be
dimensioned for the increased current.

Check Measurements
Power Circuit Measurement Attempted repair by unauthorized personnel will void the gurantee!
For all measuring tests the frequency inverter must be disconnected from mains. Also
interrupt the connection to the motor, neglecting to do so may lead to wrong test results.
Prior to carrying out any test wait for approx. 5 minutes until the intermediate circuit
capacitors are discharged.
All of the following measurements are performed with a multimeter (measuring current
approx. 3 mA, measuring voltage minimum 3 V).
If defective components are found it is absolutely necessary to have the frequency inverter
checked by KEB.
Rectifier Measurement At none of the tests the reading should indicate 0 Ohm. If only one of the tests shows
deviating readings the rectifier must be exchanged. The intermediate circuit capacitor
must be tested, since a short circuit of the rectifier can cause the destruction of the capacitor.

Prior to delivery all products pass several quality and performance inspections so
that malfunctions can be ruled out. When used in accordance with the operating
instructions failure is most unlikely.
However, if you have cause for complaint the unit should be returned stating invoice
number, delivery date, cause of failure and field conditions. We do not accept the
responsibility for failures due to misuse, wrong storage or similar causes.
