I- Drill: Identify whether Primary or Secondary Source
1. “Batas Militar: Martial Law Under President Ferdinand E. Marcos Full Documentary”
It's probably a secondary source of information, as this documentary documents and
analyses past events that occurred during the martial law reign of Marcos. It shall be
made after the facts and may include views, opinions or interpretations.
2. “La Revolution Filipina” of Apolinario Mabini
Apolinario Mabini's work "La Revolution Filipina" is considered a primary source since
it's a direct account written by a participant in the Philippine Revolution. It is a way to
gain an insight into the thoughts and outlooks of someone who has been participating in
history's events.
3. National Historical Commission of the Philippines YouTube Channel
As it is a platform for historical information to be disseminated, compiled and curated by
historians and experts, the YouTube channel of the National Historical Preservation
Council might have been a secondary source. This could be a series of videos,
presentations or documentary films about Philippine history.
4. Historical Data Papers from National Library of the Philippines
In view of their originality or history, historical documents from the Philippines National
Library can be regarded as primary sources. Other people have not altered or interpreted
these texts, and they provide a direct reference to historical events.
5. “War Memoirs of Jose P. Laurel” by Jose P. Laurel
The most important source would have been "War Memoirs" by José P. Laurel, as they were his
firsthand account of what he had experienced in the war. It provides a direct perspective of his
thoughts, actions and the events that he witnessed.
II-Historical Criticism
1. Interpret the poem made by Dr. Jose Rizal "Sa Aking Mga Kabata".
"Sa Aking Mga Kabata" is a poem by Dr. José Rizal, a national hero of the Philippines,
urging youth to recognize their potential and act on positive change. The poem reflects the
importance of language and culture, emphasizing national identity, civic responsibility,
empowerment or action. For Rizal, language is an instrument of expression that young people
should be encouraged to protect. Critical thinking and social change are encouraged in the poem
as a way of encouraging young people to become more engaged citizens and questions society's
problems. The poem ends with a hopeful message for the future, pointing to the importance of
values and principles in raising young people as well as shaping their behavior and national
destiny. In general, "Sa Aking Mga Kabata" is a timeless piece which shows the significance of
nationhood and language as well as social responsibility for improving society.
2. What was Rizal's message in his poem?
"Sa Aking Mga Kabat", Dr. Jose Rizal calls upon the youth to embrace their state of
origin, uphold their language and culture while working toward a sustainable change in this
country. The poem stresses pride in our country's identity, the language as a source of identity,
power and responsibility, awareness of social problems and hope for the future. Rizal says that
young people must be aware of their responsibilities and strive to achieve change which is good
for the country's welfare.
3. Write an Historical criticism - “Sa Aking Mga Kabata" by: Jose Rizal
External Criticism
"Sa Aking Mga Kabata" by Dr. José Rizal, is considered to be one of the most important
historical and cultural poems in Philippine history. The poem shows that, during Spanish colonial
rule, the people of Spain were faced with a number of challenges as agents of change, such as
colonization suppression, emerging nationalism, censorship, resistance, education and youth. The
struggle for Philippine identity, national unity, and the significance of their language and concept
of a unified nation are reflected in Rizal's call to be proud of your own language and culture. The
poem also highlights the necessity of education and enlightenment in order for society to move
forward, calling on young Filipinos to actively shape their country's destiny.
