EN8 is an unalloyed medium carbon steel commonly used in automotive parts and general engineering applications. It provides better properties than mild steel but is less expensive than alloy steels. EN8 can be flame or induction hardened to increase surface hardness and wear resistance. It machines well and has reasonable tensile strength. EN8 requires heat treatment if over 18mm thick to prevent cracking during welding.

Product Description Machinability


EN8 is an unalloyed medium carbon steel which is used in Good
applications where better properties than mild steel are
required but where the costs do not justify the purchase of Related material specifications
a steel alloy. EN8 can be heat treated to provide a good
surface hardness and moderate wear resistance by flame BS970: 1955 EN8
or induction hardening processes. From the automotive BS970/PD970: 080M40
trade to wider general engineering applications, EN8 is a 1970 onwards
popular steel in industry. European C40, C45, Ck40,Ck45, Cm40, Cm45
Werkstoff No. 1.0511, 1.1186, 1.1189
Weldability US SAE (AISI) 1039, 1040, 1042, 1043, 1045

Heat treatment required if over 18mm to prevent cracking. Availability
