Radio connection
On the radio side (to the Base Station), the RNU is connected to the
Outdoor Unit using a coaxial cable (IF cable).
At least two ordering numbers are required for RNU4M-8C, i.e. one for the
basic unit and another one for the font panel with CPM (Connection Panel
Module). In addition, it must be indicated whether the RNU shall be
equipped with a Smart Card for the optional A & E performance feature (see
section 2.2.8 on page 2-12).

On the left-hand side of this drawing there are the RNUs providing the
interfaces referred to as User Network Interfaces (UNI) on the subscriber
side. With the RNU4M-8C, these are a 2 Mbit/s interface and a variety of
other subscriber interfaces that can be made available by Service Units
(SUs).
On the right-hand side, there is the Base Station with its interface to the
exchange. This interface is referred to as Service Node Interface (SNI).
Between the RNU and Base Station there is a radio hop which
interconnects the Outdoor Units (ODUs) on both sides.
The system may be installed and operated only in locations with restricted
access.
Ignoring these safety instructions and the warnings may result in injury and
damage to property.
It is therefore required that only trained and qualified personnel
(maintenance staff as per EN 60950) install and maintain the system.
The unit may be taken into operation only after having set up the re-
quired connection to ground. This grounding must be in compliance
with the relevant national regulations.

2.1.1 Modems
Each modem handles one data stream of up to 2 Mbit/s. Modem # 1 serves
the Network Unit. The 2 Mbit/s interface of modem #2 is made available as
an external interface via a CPM.
Modem #1 (or ’Master modem’) holds a special position and handles the
following central functions:
The following modulation schemes with different channel coding rates are
used:
The existing carrier remains in operation until the new carrier has been
completely set up and synchronized. After completing the setup of the new
carrier and synchronizing it, the traffic is switched over from the existing to
the new carrier. Then the old carrier is deleted.
This feature maximizes the sector capacity by taking the traffic volume into
consideration. The bandwidth adaptation is controlled by the Base Station.
Before starting the alignment process, the system must have been
completely installed and the antenna must be coarsely aligned. When
starting up the modem (reboot), the Outdoor Unit type (system type,
motor-driven WGA, beep generator) is requested. If communication is not
possible, the parameters are taken from the configuration file. Without a
motor-driven WGA or beep generator, the alignment is executed according
to the process previously used.
You can select between four different connector variants which can be
used to make the signal available on the RNU front panel (see section 3.3).
At the radio-side input, the performance data (G.826) are recovered from
the performance of the radio link to the Base Station.

The connection between the LT and NT is normally set up via copper cable.
In the MDMS, this connection is replaced by a radio link.
In the past, the LT was regarded as part of the local exchange and the DIVO
was responsible for monitoring the link quality. Many tasks of the S2M and
V2M interfaces, signalling of faults and quality information as well as the
possibility of switching test loops for troubleshooting purposes are
resulting from this time.
A special feature of the MDMS is the connection between the MDMS and
DIVO which is implemented by a digital signal link. Several E1 subscriber
accesses can be integrated into an STM signal by means of a multiplexer
and transmitted, for example, via an optical fiber cable. This digital signal
link must be transparent at the E1 level.

1. The CRC4 procedure and detection of CRC errors and E-bits can be
switched off at the S2M interface of the TS. Thus, subscriber
terminating equipment not supporting the CRC4 procedure can
also be connected.
2. The components of the subscriber access network must support
CRC. In this section, the CRC check is always active.
In order to permit performance monitoring for the transmission section
between the TS and TE, the information available in the TS on the TE status
is transmitted to the DIVO:
E -B it 001 0
CRC 000 1
E -b it E -b it
BS D IVO
TE TS (M odem ) DSV
CR C CRC
FAS faults occurring at S2Min are not signalled to the DIVO. If the CRC
detection is switched off in the TS, the DIVO cannot evaluate TE
anomalies/faults.
The link between the TS and DIVO is also monitored by the DIVO in both
directions. In this case, defects are identified by means of the E-bit: In case
of a defect signalled to the TS (via the transparent BS) (see Fig. 2.5: ), the
E-bit is set in the return direction to the DIVO (an E-bit set has the binary
value "0").
With system version V4.2 and higher, the DIVO is capable of monitoring the
complete transmission link up to the TS.
2.2.3 IF Unit
The IF Unit sets up the functional connection between the modems and
Outdoor Unit (ODU).
Both the transmit and receive signal, signalling information as well as the
clock signal and supply voltage for the ODU are transmitted via one single
coaxial cable (IF cable).
In the IF Unit, the following fault reports are generated and signalled to the
modem:
Since the Radio Unit is configured via modem #1 (Master modem) and the
Network Unit via the NU control unit, the RS232 interface must be able to
switch over between these two. This switchover is executed automatically
and software-controlled by the INCO/LMT at the OAM switch.
Another switchover function also connects the UAI (PC) port to each of the
two modems. In order to get status and protocol information from the
second modem, the interface automatically switches between both
modems*.
There are five signalling inputs, one auxiliary voltage of -24 V for powering
the sensors connected as well as one floating switching output.
For a detailed description of the EDI interface, please refer to section 3.4.4
on page 3-7.
An RNU4M-8C is defined using the part no. of the RNU basic unit (in
10.5/3.5 or 26 GHz version) and the part no. of the CPM to be mounted.
The different front panels available are depicted in section 3.3 on page 3-3.
2.3.3 ZE switch
For leased-line operation (see section 5.1.3 on page 5-2), the switch on the
ZE board is used to apply the E1 signal (supplied by the modem) to the
corresponding SU module. The switching matrix permits a granularity of 64
kbit/s.
Both POTS and Leased-Line 2-wire interfaces can be made available. With
a conductor diameter of 0.4 mm, a range of 1.2 km can be covered.
With a conductor diameter of 0.4 mm, the following ranges are covered:
The data interface can be operated with or without control lines. The
information available on the control lines carried in a 64 kbit/s channel
(control channel) is converted by the SU.
In the overall system, the control channel is processed like a B-channel. For
this reason, only 29 B-channels will be available when control line
information is transmitted.
Own Service Units are required both for V.11 operation and V.35 operation:
With a conductor diameter of 0.4 mm, the SU-N64k-V.11 can cover the
following ranges:
For this purpose, the Service Unit SU-IP is used as Terminal Router (TR) in
the RNU4M-8C. This Terminal Router interacts with the Central Router
(CDN-IP or CDN8-IP) connected to the CDN via E1 interfaces with V5.2
protocol.
The Central Router sets up the connection to the Internet / IP network.
On the subscriber-side, the Service Unit SU-IP provides one Ethernet and
one S0 interface.

With a wire diameter of 0.4 mm, the following coverage ranges can be
achieved:

3.6 Maintenance
The RNU is maintenance-free. Only a faulty fan has to be replaced. This is
possible without opening the RNU and without operational interruption.
The fan is located in the left rear part of the RNU (see Fig. 3.1). To replace
a faulty fan, proceed as follows:
— Remove the fan cover screws on the rear side of the RNU.
The operating time of the RNU without fan (during repairs) should be
limited to a minimum, in order to avoid an overheating of modules.
Chapter 4
Installation
The following drawing shows the top view of the RNU prepared for being
mounted in an ETS rack. The flanges on the left-hand and right-hand side
required for installation in a 19“ rack are installed. The flange brackets also
provide handles for holding the RNU.The additional flanges required for
installation in an ETS rack are mounted onto the flange brackets.
Proceed as follows:
— Secure the RNU in the rack using four screws (M6x16) and four
spacers.
Prerequisites
For wall mounting, the two mounting brackets included in the special
mounting kit must be attached to the left and right side of the RNU using
the four short screws (M6x10).
Using the template, bore four holes into the wall. Insert dowels and mount
the RNU unit by means of four screws.
If the right side panel of the RNU unit has ventiducts, wall-moun-
ting must be executed in such a way that these holes are not poin-
ting down. In this case the unit can be mounted only with the front
panel pointing to the right.
The cover must be mounted in such a way that the front-panel LEDs
of the RNU are visible through the cover openings.
The following two drawings show the wall-mounting options of the RNU.

4.2 Cabling
4.2.1 Grounding
Grounding at the RNU grounding bolt
If the RNU is mounted in a rack (19“ or ETS), grounding via the grounding
bolt is not absolutely necessary provided that the unit is screwed to the
rack in such a way that there is a conductive connection to the rack and
the rack itself is grounded according to the relevant regulations.
Grounding must comply with the relevant local and national stan-
dards and regulations!
The connection of the supply voltage is set up via the RNU front-panel
connector (see Fig. 3.3 on page 3-3).
This connector must be secured by means of two screws in order to avoid
unintentional disconnection.
Connect or disconnect the power supply cable only with the supply
voltage switched off.
Before connecting the IF cable, both the cable and RNU must have
been grounded in compliance with the relevant regional and natio-
nal regulations!
The connection between the RNU and Outdoor Unit is set up via a coaxial
cable. On the RNU, the cable is connected to the front panel via a 90o
N-connector (see Fig. 3.4 on page 3-4).
Chapter 5
Commissioning the RNU4M-8C
The Service PC is connected via the UAI (PC) port located in the left-hand
section of the front panel (see Fig. 3.3 on page 3-3) via a zero-modem
cable. Depending on whether the INCO or LMT software is started on the
PC, the OAM switch sets up a connection from the PC to the Master
modem or to the NU control unit.
The network element address is basically assigned on site using the LMT
software application. The further configuration of the NU is normally carried
out by the Network Management System. This is easily possible after
having entered the NE address.
For information on how to make these basic settings, please refer to the
Commissioning Manual for the Terminal Station.
Thus, a SU-IP operated in the "Permanent Leased Line Mode" can interact
with any E1 router, since V5.2 functionalities are not used. The SU-IP
supports up to three independent channel groups (four with the outband
port deactivated) with a fixed data rate (nx64kbit/s) of up to 1920 kbit/s. For
a detailed description of the IP configuration in the leased-line mode,
please refer to the Operating Manual of the SU-IP (see section 3.5.3, Doc.
no. 62.1016.010.83) or to the Commissioning Manual.
The complete QD2 schematic of the RNU4M-8C RRS includes twice the
model depicted above.
The IF Unit functional group represents the IF stage of the MDMS system.
It consists only of the IF functional block. Here the corresponding alarms
are displayed and the basic configuration data are entered for frequency
