Medical term Definition Translation
additive any substance which is added to another substance to
improve it or prevent deterioration

Dextrose a sugar which is the most common form of glucose

erythema rednessness of the skin caused by injury or infection

fluid intake fluid which enters the body by mouth, by feeding tube,
rectally or intravenously
IV giving set a piece of medical equipment which is inserted into a bag of
IV solution and connects to the patient via an intravenous
line through an intravenous cannula
infiltration fluid accumulation in the tissues in excess amounts . Also
called tissuing
IVC intravenous cannula; a flexible tube that is inserted
into a blood vessel to administer a substance such as
a medication , also called Venflon
intravenous fluids fluids which are administered through a vein, also called IV
fluids or drip
intravenous infusion a solution which is usually contained in a litre bag, also
called a bag
Intravenous a chart which is used by a doctor to order IV fluids for a
Prescription Chart patient, also called Intravenous Fluids Order
N/S Normal Saline; a solution of sodium chloride at 0.9%
concentration, which resembles the concentration in the
blood, also called isotonic solution
nosocomial resulting from treatment in a hospital but not related to the
original disease, also called hospital-acquired
phlebitis inflammation of a vein

PICC Peripherally Inserted Central Catheter; a catheter which


is inserted in a peripheral vein and then guided through
larger veins towards the heart until the tip rests in the
superior vena cava
preloaded infusion an infusion which already contains an additive, e.g.
potassium chloride (KCl)
staphylococcus a group of bacteria which cause local infections and other
(pl. staphylococci) serious infections
abbrev staph.
to take down a line to remove an IV infusion

TKVO/KVO to keep the vein open; fluid which is given at a very slow
rate via an IV infusion so that the IV line can continue to be
used for IV injections or infusions.
