Tableau Final Paper

The document analyzes a dataset on students' exam performance and how it relates to various factors like gender, parental education levels, and lunch programs. Key findings include: - Students with higher parental education achieved higher average scores. - Females outperformed males on average in reading and writing, while males scored slightly higher in math. - Test preparation programs correlated with higher average scores, and female students benefited more than males. - Standard lunch programs and test preparation correlated with higher average scores, especially for female students. The dataset provides valuable insights into factors influencing academic performance to help educators and policymakers improve education outcomes.

Part 1: Introduction / Problem Overview

The academic performance of students has always been a topic of great interest and
concern for educators, parents, and policymakers alike. In today's digital age, with the
availability of vast amounts of data, it is possible to analyze and gain insights into various factors
that influence students academic performance. The dataset "Students Performance in Exams"
provides a comprehensive look at the performance of a diverse group of students in mathematics,
reading, and writing exams. The following dataset contains information on various factors such
as gender, race/ethnicity, parental level of education, lunch type, and test preparation course
completion, which can be analyzed to identify patterns and trends in students academic
performance. We help to better understand the patterns in this dataset by answering the following
questions: What major differences in scores do we see when comparing level of parental
education and gender? How impactful are test prep programs to the average score of
students? How does the type of lunch program impact the average score of students overall?.
Each member will create visuals and compare how different variables impact the scores of each
student individually and on average between three different subject tests.
Part 2 Data Analysis / Discussion

Average Test Score = (Parent Education, Lunch Program, Test Prep, Gender)

Analysis: The regression model was done in order to determine whether any of the variables
would be significant when determining the average test score overall per student. The model R
squared for the model shows that about 24 percent of the average combined score can be
explained by the given variables, meaning that there are other factors that can be impactful. The
model also shows us that each variable, when using a 95 percent confidence test, is significant
(using p-value). This will assist us in creating useful multi-dimensional models.
Dimension: Level of Parent Education
Measure: Average Total Score

Analysis: This table shows us the average score for students whose parents have a certain level
of education. The chart explains that there is a difference between the average score received by
each student based on the level of education each parent has; moreover, the higher the level of
education the parent has obtained, the higher the average score the student receives. Interesting
points to note are that there is no major difference between the average score received by
students whose parents had bachelors degrees and those whose parents had a master's degree.
Dimension: Gender
Measure: Average Total Score

Analysis: This chart just shows us the average score received by each gender overall. With
females receiving a higher score on average.

Dimensions: Gender
Measures: Average Math Scores, Average Reading Scores, Average Writing Scores
Analysis: We were naturally interested in comparing the scores of both genders. Our findings
indicate that, on average, females outperform males in Reading and Writing. However, males had
a slight edge and scored slightly better, on average, compared to females.

\\

Dimensions: Parent Level of Education

Measures: Average Math Score, Average Reading Score, and Average Writing Score.

Analysis: In our study, we observed that students whose parents held a Master’s degree achieved
the highest average scores across all subjects. Conversely, those whose parents had a lower level
of education scored lower on average. Additionally, we noticed similarities between the
performance of students whose parents had either completed “some college” or had a “high
school” education level.
Dimensions: Parents Education / Gender
Measures: Average Score

Analysis: The data indicates that there is a significant difference in the academic performance of
male and female students based on their parents education level. Female students whose parents
have higher levels of education tend to perform better academically on average than their male
counterparts. For example, female students whose parents have a bachelor's degree or higher had
higher average scores in math, reading, and writing exams than male students whose parents had
the same education level.
Dimensions: Gender / Test Prep Average Scores
Measures: Average Math, Average Reading, Average Writing, Average Total Score

Analysis: In our study, students who completed a test preparation course performed better on
average than those who did not. There was also a notable difference in academic performance
between male and female students where the female students often outperformed the male
counterparts in all three exams whether they completed a test preparation course or not.
Dimension: Reduced Lunch, Standard Lunch, Test Prep, Average Math & Average Score
Measure: Average grades of math & average score based off if the students had reduced lunch /
standard and if they completed a test preparation course or not

Analysis: The data shows that students who completed a test preparation course and had standard
lunch performed better on average than those who did not. Additionally, when analyzing the data
by gender, it is evident that female students who completed a test preparation course and had
standard lunch tended to perform better academically on average than their male counterparts.
However, male students who completed a test preparation course and had standard lunch
performed better than male students who did not.

Conclusion

To summarize, the "Students Performance in Exams" dataset is a valuable resource for

examining the factors that influence academic achievement. It offers a wide range of information
on students' demographics, educational background, and exam performance, enabling researchers
to gain insights into the key determinants of academic success. By employing advanced analytics
and machine learning techniques, this dataset can be leveraged to develop models that predict
students' academic performance, empowering educators and policymakers to implement
proactive measures for enhancing educational outcomes. In essence, the "Students Performance
in Exams" dataset holds the potential to provide crucial insights for improving the quality of
education and ensuring better academic results for students.
