Mapping Words in Sounds Boxes
Mapping Words in Sounds Boxes
x: “x” spells two sounds /k/-/s/, so we place the “x” on the line to show that it
takes 2 boxes.

qu: “qu” spells two sounds /k/-/w/, but they need to be together to spell this,
so we place them close together but in two separate boxes.

Blends: Blends are consonant letter combinations where each basic sound can be
heard. Because each sound is still spelled, each letter of a blend is placed in its
own box.
NOTE: Students should underline the boxes with the letters making the blend to
map the blend.

CK: “ck” acts like a double letter blend since both letters spell the same sound.

Digraphs: Digraphs make one sound so the letter pattern that spells the digraph
is in one box.

Sneaky “e”: the sneaky “e” is not in a box because it does not make a sound,
but it needs to be linked to the vowel it speaks to (telling that vowel to spell
the long vowel sound).

Sneaky “e” & soft c: the sneaky “e” is in the box with the c. It causes the “c”
to spell /s/. It also needs to be linked to the vowel it speaks to (telling that
vowel to spell the long vowel sound).

“se” & “ze”: When “se” or “ze” follows a vowel team (ex. ee, ea, ai, oa), a
dipthong (or, ar, oi, ou), or a consonant, the “e” does not have a purpose other
than being paired with the “s” or “z.”
