Mapping Words in Sounds Boxes

This document provides instructions for mapping words into sound boxes when spelling sounds. It explains that consonant combinations like "x" and "qu" take up two boxes each since they represent two sounds. Blends take up separate boxes for each letter. Double letters and digraphs take a single box. A "sneaky e" is not in a box but is linked to the vowel it affects. Vowel teams like "ea" take a single box since they represent one sound.

Mapping Words in Sounds Boxes

*Always color the vowel sound(s) you hear.

x: “x” spells two sounds /k/-/s/, so we place the “x” on the line to show that it
takes 2 boxes.

qu: “qu” spells two sounds /k/-/w/, but they need to be together to spell this,
so we place them close together but in two separate boxes.

Blends: Blends are consonant letter combinations where each basic sound can be
heard. Because each sound is still spelled, each letter of a blend is placed in its
own box.
NOTE: Students should underline the boxes with the letters making the blend to
map the blend.

_________ _________

Double letter blends: Since the sound spelling for that letter is only spelled
once, both letters belong in one box.

CK: “ck” acts like a double letter blend since both letters spell the same sound.

Digraphs: Digraphs make one sound so the letter pattern that spells the digraph
is in one box.

Sneaky “e”: the sneaky “e” is not in a box because it does not make a sound,
but it needs to be linked to the vowel it speaks to (telling that vowel to spell
the long vowel sound).

Sneaky “e” & soft c: the sneaky “e” is in the box with the c. It causes the “c”
to spell /s/. It also needs to be linked to the vowel it speaks to (telling that
vowel to spell the long vowel sound).

Vowel Teams: Vowel teams are pairs of vowels that make one vowel sound.
Because only one sound is made, a vowel team belongs in one box. (Ex. ee, ea, ai,
oa, ui, ue, oe)
NOTE: “oe” and “ue” can belong to sneaky “e” or vowel teams, but they are both
mapped like vowel teams.

“se” & “ze”: When “se” or “ze” follows a vowel team (ex. ee, ea, ai, oa), a
dipthong (or, ar, oi, ou), or a consonant, the “e” does not have a purpose other
than being paired with the “s” or “z.”
