MTH1103 Foundations of Mathematics Test 1 (13:00 – 13:59 hrs) Semester I 2023/2025 AY

Makerere University Name:

Department of Mathematics Reg. No. :
Date: 15th September 2023 Program Code: Retake?:

Instructions:

• Answer ALL questions.

• Write your answers ONLY in the spaces provided on the question paper.

1. Let A = {a, b, c}. How many subsets does set A contain, and what are they? [2 marks]

2. Let V = {x, y, z}, W = {x, y}, and Z = {x, z} be given sets. Construct:

(a) a Venn diagram for the sets V , W , and Z. [2 marks]

(b) a line diagram for the sets V , W , and Z. [2 marks]

3. Let A and B be sets. Prove that B − Ac = B ∩ A. [2 marks]

4. Consider the intervals A = [−8, 5) and B = (−3, ∞). With the help of a number
line, find the intervals:

(a) A ∪ B. [1 mark]

(b) A ∩ B. [1 mark]

5. State whether the following sets are bounded or not:

(a) {2, 5, 2, 5, . . .}. [1 mark]

(b) {1, 3, 5, 7, . . .}. [1 mark]

6. Let A = {a, b}, B = {2, 3}, and C = {3, 4} be given sets. Find A × (B ∪ C). [2 marks]

7. Let W = {1, 2, 3, 4}, and R = {(1, 1), (2, 2), (2, 3), (1, 4), (3, 2), (3, 3), (4, 3), (4, 4)} be
a relation on W . By giving reasons, answer the following:

(a) Is R reflexive? [2 marks]

(b) Is R symmetric? [2 marks]

(c) Is R transitive? [2 marks]

8. Let p be “It is cold” and let q be “It is raining”. Give a simple verbal sentence
which describes the following statements:

(a) p ∧ q. [1 mark]

(b) p → ¬q. [1 mark]

9. Let p be “She is tall” and q be “She is beautiful”. Write each of the following
statements in symbolic form using p and q:

(a) She is tall but not beautiful. [1 mark]

(b) She is tall, or she is short and beautiful. [1 mark]

10. Determine the truth value of each of the following composite statements:

(a) If 8 − 2 = 5, then 4 + 4 = 8. [1 mark]

(b) Kigali is in Rwanda if and only if Kampala is in Kenya. [1 mark]

11. With a truth table, verify that the proposition (p ∧ q) → (p ∨ q) is a tautology. [4 marks]
