The document summarizes the basic rules for Swiss systems tournaments as outlined by the International Chess Federation (FIDE). The rules state that the number of rounds must be declared beforehand, players may not play each other more than once, odd numbers of players result in one player receiving a bye, players are generally paired with others having the same score, and color balance is maintained in pairings following rules to alternate colors between rounds and limit the difference between black and white games.
