PH1010 NRW

1. The document provides a preparation guide for the PH1010 course. It recommends going through class notes, textbooks, tutorials, and past papers to prepare. 2. It emphasizes doing well on mini quizzes, knowing exam timing, and learning the formalism expected rather than informal tricks. 3. The syllabus covers symmetries, Newton's laws, oscillations, vectors, and polar coordinates. Example problems are provided for practice.

PH1010 : Preparation Guide

ANIRUDH B S

13th December 2022

ANIRUDH B S PH1010 : Preparation Guide 13th December 2022 1/6

How to prepare ?

1 Go through the class notes provided first. Whatever will be asked will
be from the material covered.
2 Go through the texts - Morin, Marion and Thronton and Taylor - all
are excellent texts if used properly.
3 Be comfortable with the notation used. Make yourself familiar with
the convention used in past years.
4 Learn how to solve differential equations - Homogeneous solution and
Particular Integral, useful in all future courses if done correctly now.
5 Go through the Tutorials properly first. If time permits proceed to
Past Year Papers, then tutorials and then only proceed towards
unsolved problems in text.

Particularly PH1010

1 First Formal course in PH department. Generally low scoring and very

few (≈ 10) are given S grade.
2 Make most of the mini quizzes, they will boost your score. Mini
quizzes are introduced this time only to boost your score this time.
So make sure to completely do the tutorial before the mini quizzes
and get full 20/20 in them.
3 The Midsem and Endsem are time consuming. Make sure that you
know the time when writing the examination.
4 Do NOT use any of the informal tricks learnt in JEE. It won’t be
accepted. Learn the formalism used in Physics. In case you are
interested in Physics and want to go beyond what’s covered, you can
refer to Prof Balakrishnan’s videos on youtube on Classical Physics
and Prof S Bharadwaj’s lectures on Oscillations. Both are excellent.

3 I am also enclosing two problems from the endsem which were based
on oscillations ! for you to feel the PH1010 endsem.

Problem 1

Consider the Lagrangian L described by

1 1
L = e γt ( mẋ 2 − mw 2 x 2 ) (1)
2 2
Do a suitable transformation q(x) that would reduce the Lagrangian to a
simple T-V form.
Also derive the equations of motion for the system from the Lagrangian
(Hint : Use the Euler Lagrange Equations. Look up the net for this)
Describe the system in a sentence
HINT : The Lagrangian for this system is simply T-V and no
additional information is needed to solve this problem and elegantly
derive the equations of motion

Problem 2
A circular wire hoop rotates with constant angular velocity ω about a
vertical diameter. A small bead moves, without friction, along the hoop.
Find the equilibrium position of the particle and calculate the frequency of
small oscillations about this position. Find a critical angular velocity ωc
which divides the motion of the particle into two types. Graph the
equilibrium position as a function of ω.
