1 Overview
MecaLug is an Engineering software program used to design Lifting lugs per ASME BTH-1 ‘Design of
Below-The-Hook Lifting Devices.’. The program is a windows based program that allows the user to
enter details about the lifting lug or lifting system, and then produce a professional report with all
supporting calculations.

1.1 System Requirements

 Windows 7, Windows 8 or Windows 10
 RAM 4 GB or more
 Microsoft.Net Framework 4.5.2 or greater (Installed automatically by software)
 Must be capable of installing software with administrator rights.
 MecaLug does not run directly on Apple based products; however, if the user has a Windows
emulator (Bootcamp, parallels, or similar) then they can run MecaLug within those
environments.

1.2 Pre-Requisites
The software is based upon the ASME BTH-1 standard. The software is intended to supplement the
ASME BTH-1 standard and make it easier to implement the requirements in a Lug design, but it is not a
substitute for the standard itself. In order to fully use and understand the software, it is recommended
that the user own a copy of ASME BTH-1, and understand the principles and concepts. The software
follows this standard.

1.3 Customer Portal

You can access your customer
account information by logging
into our Customer Portal. This can
be done by clicking the link below.
There are several ways in which
you can log in, either by license ID,

MecaLug Software Help Manual Page 4

1.4 Technical Support
All technical support is handled by email, please email support@mecaenterprises.com. We have an
option to “Report Bug” under the help menu to make this process as simple as possible.

1.5 Installation Instructions

The software must be installed with administrator rights. The steps for installing the software are as
follows (Instructions based upon normal Windows 10 installation, depending upon operating system the
options may be slightly different, but same basic process):

1) Log onto computer with Administrator Privileges

2) Download the Software
a. Download from our website:
http://www.mecaenterprises.com/downloads/software/mecaluginstall.exe
b. Log into the customer portal, and download from the “Download” section of your
customer account.
https://secure.mecaenterprises.com/solo/customers/Default.aspx
3) Right –click with mouse, and Select “Run as Administrator”
4) Go through installation process. If your computer does not already have the Microsoft.Net
4.5.2 Client framework installed, then that will be installed as well.
5) At the completion of the installation,
there is a check box that is checked
indicating to launch the software. Make
sure this is checked. The first time
MecaLug is launched, it must be with
administrator rights, so that the software
may set up the directories that are
required. After this first execution,
subsequent uses of the software do not
require administrator rights.

6) Upon Launching the Software, a Security Screen will probably appear. If the menu does not
appear, then you were probably taken into the software in Demo mode. Looking at the Title, if
“DEMO” appears at the beginning of the title bar at the top, then you are in demo mode. Click
“Security” and then “Activate”, and the security menu will appear as below:

MecaLug Software Help Manual Page 5

Software Demonstration Mode – This is the option to select if you have NOT purchased the software
and are looking to try the software out in limited demonstration mode. It is not fully functional, but will
show the user the capabilities.

Refer to your order information to determine if a Single User or Floating Network license have been
purchased, and the select the appropriate option and click continue.

1.5.1 Single User License Activation

This type of license is intended to be used only on a single computer. This is the option you would also
select if a “Laptop” license has been purchased for the
same user.

Referring to the original order information, enter the

information required on the activation screen. The
license. The email address is required in the event that
we need to contact the user to advise of a problem
with the license, we do not use it for any marketing
purposes. The Computer Description is also a tool to
help us communicate with the user and refer to a
computer description that is meaningful to the user
(i.e. John’s Laptop, etc..).

Once the information is entered, then click “OK”. If

successful, then the user will get a message
indicating that activation was successful.

MecaLug Software Help Manual Page 6

1.5.1.1 Troubleshooting
In the event that the activation was not successful, here are some things to check:

a) Verify the license # and password are correct

b) Ensure that the internet connection is working
c) If you have a firewall turned on, temporarily turn it off and try to activate again.
d) If you are operating through a proxy server, then look at our tips for proxy servers.

1.5.1.2 Changing Computers

In the event that you need to move the software from one computer to another, here is the process.

i) Launch MecaLug
ii) Go to “Security” menu at the top,
and select “Deactivate
iii) Select “Deactivate License”

iv) You will receive this verification if it

was successful.

Please note that you are only able to do this 6 times

per year. This isn’t an option that is to be used to
share a license between users, it can only be used
to move the software to another computer.

1.5.1.3 Computer Crash

If your computer crashes and you can no longer go through the process of deactivating, then please
email support@mecaenterprises and explain the situation, and we will reset the license from our end.

1.5.2 Floating Network License

This is the type of license which requires an internet connection, and can be used to share a license
between multiple users.

MecaLug Software Help Manual Page 7

Enter the license ID and password that were provided with the order information. . The email address
is required in the event that we need to contact the user to advise of a problem with the license, we do
not use it for any marketing purposes. The Computer Description is also a tool to help us communicate
with the user and refer to a computer description that is meaningful to the user (i.e. John’s Laptop,
etc..).

Once all information is entered, click “Floating Network Login”, on the lower left hand corner of form. If
a seat is available, then the screen will change as follows:

From this point, click “Use Full Version” in the lower right corner, and you will be taken into the full
version of the software.

MecaLug Software Help Manual Page 8

In the event that there are no seats available, then this is the screen you will see:

If the software crashed unexpectedly, then it will take 5 minutes for the server to reset itself so that you
can log in again. In this event, you will see the same screen as if there were no seats available.

1.5.2.1 Troubleshooting
If you know that there should be a seat available, but you are still unable to log in, then here are the
steps to follow:

1) Ensure that all other users are out of the software. If someone crashed the program, rather
than close it normally, then it will take 5 minutes to reset.
2) Make sure you have an internet connection
3) If you have a firewall, temporarily disable it to see if that is the issue. If that is the issue, then
you need to allow MecaLug an exception to pass through the firewall.
4) If you are using a Proxy Server, then please see our Proxy server information for more tips.

1.5.2.2 Changing Computers

With a floating network license, changing computers is simple. You only need to install the software on
the new computer, and enter the license ID and Password. Follow the same steps as for a new
installation.

1.5.2.3 Computer Crash

With a floating network license, this is very simple. Install the software and Log In again, just as if it
were a new installation.

1.5.3 Proxy Servers

If you are unable to gain access through a proxy server, please add an exception for IP 66.150.98.79 .
We utilize port 80 for plain-text and 443 for SSL. You can test each port by clicking the links below.

1. http://secure.mecaenterprises.com/solo/webservices/XmlNetworkFloatingService.asmx
(if this one fails then port 80 is blocked)

2. https://secure.mecaenterprises.com/solo/webservices/XmlNetworkFloatingService.asmx
(If this one fails then port 443 is blocked)

MecaLug Software Help Manual Page 9

2 MecaLug Startup
When MecaLug is launched, the main menu will appear. Within this screen are only two options. The
user must determine whether they want to model an entire lifting system (Crane point, lifting cables,
center of gravity, etc..) and have the program calculate the loads on the lug based upon these
parameters, or if a single lug is to be analyzed based upon loads entered by the user.

2.1 Title Bar

The title bar displays the Module that is purchased; MecaLug or MecaLug Pro. The version number is
displayed. Also the path to the input file location. When MecaLug is opened, it always initially opens
the default file which was set by the user (To be discussed in greater detail later).

The controls at the right of the title bar are the typical windows controls, Minimize, Maximize and Exit
(Listed in order from Left to Right).

2.2 Menus – Analysis Selection

The Analysis selection screen is the first screen encountered when launching the software. This screen
only has one menu, and that is the Security menu. The Security menu is only displayed on this screen, it
is not displayed anywhere else in the software.

MecaLug Software Help Manual Page 10

2.2.1 Security Menu
The security menu will look different depending upon whether the user is running in Demo Mode,
Single User License or Floating Network License.

2.2.1.1 Single User Mode (Also Demo)

Activate – This will allow you to go back to the initial activation, and
either activate using a new license number or log into a floating network
license. Please note that Activating a new license, will not automatically
deactivate your current license. So normally you would deactivated the
current license, before you activate a new license.

Deactivate – Deactivates the license so that it can be used on

another computer. Refer to change computers for more
information.

License Status – Provides details on license, and shows the

expiration date for the lease.

2.2.1.2 Floating Network Mode

When logged into a floating network license, the following options will be available.

Activate – Go back to the initial activation screen where you can choose
to Activate a Single User license.

Floating Network – Here you can see the status of your floating network session. It will show the
number of seats available and all other relevant information. Also you can Log out of your current
session by clicking “Floating Network Logout”. Doing this will revert the software to Demo mode.

MecaLug Software Help Manual Page 11

2.3 Help On-Demand
MecaLug has a built in On-Demand help system that I available in most parts of the software. If there is
an input which is not clear, then the user simply needs to Hover the mouse over that input cell for a
second or two, and then a help bubble will pop up to explain the field in greater detail. This is available
for nearly all entries in the software. By “Hover” over a cell, we simply mean to move the cursor over
the top of the cell and then leave the cursor still. If this doesn’t work then you may need to click
elsewhere on the form, and then try to hover again.

2.4 Units
On each menu there is an option to select the units to be either English or Metric. MecaLug has a very
useful feature in that the values throughout the software are automatically converted to the units
selected by the user. This means that if a user is more comfortable using English units, then all values
can be entered using English. If the calculations are required to be displayed in metric units, the user
simply needs to convert to Metric and then all values are converted automatically.

Note: Within the internals of the software all units are stored and manipulated as English units. If
metric are selected, the output interface then converts from English to Metric units. This is important
because there are instances where round-off error can cause a value to be represented slightly
different. For example, a user may intend to enter 6.35 mm, and it could sometimes be changed to
6.34999 mm.

2.5 Menus – Lifting System

The menus are as follows:

2.5.1 File Menu

New – Starts a New file

MecaLug Software Help Manual Page 12

Save – Save the file. If a name was already given, then it will be saved with that name and a “.lft”
extension added to the end.

Save As – Give the file a name, and then it will be saved with that name and a “.lft” extension added to
the end.

Open – Open an existing wind file. The files that MecaLug will open are *.lft files. Note: These files are
text formatted which can be opened with any text editor (i.e. notepad, wordpad, etc..) if you would like
to check the contents.

Save Current File as Default – This will save the current set of inputs as the “Default” file that is opened
each time you open MecaLug. This can be used as a tool to set up the program to have the entries that
you always want to appear when the software is opened. For example, if you live in a certain region
then the standard wind values for that region could be entered. The Project information could also be
entered so that it’s retrieved each time.

Tip: Since the default file is the file that is loaded each session, it is very easy to hit “Save” and overwrite
your original Default file with whatever is currently entered. Therefore, we recommend creating a
backup of your defaults, so that you can open and “Save Current File as Default”, in the event that you
corrupt your Default file.

Recent Files – This brings up a list of files recently saved. Select one of these files, and it will “Open”
that file.

Project Info – Enter the project information that will be displayed in

the output report. This information is used for documentation
purposes only and changes for each project.

Company Info – This is information entered about the company

performing the calculations. This information stays the same each
time and is retained for each project. The “Logo” option is not
currently used.

Revision History – Displays the recent history of revisions that have been made to the software with
each version.

Exit – Exit the software.

2.5.2 Help Menu

Help Content – Opens this file. If you are reading this, then you have
obviously mastered this option!

About – Gives general information About the software.

MecaLug Software Help Manual Page 13

Check for Update – This checks to see if you are using the latest version of the software. If there is a
later version then you will be given the option to download.

Revision History – Displays the recent history of revisions that have been made to the software with
each version.

2.5.2.1 Report a Error

This option won’t necessarily work
for every user, because of
restrictions within your operating
environment; however, it is used to
quickly email a bug report to
support@mecaenterprises.com .
Two files are automatically
attached to the email, and these
are shown at the bottom. One file
is the “Input File” and it’s the *.lft
file which is currently being used.
The other file is the MecaLog.Txt
file, and it is an important file that you can send us when there are problems with the security. It helps
us to diagnose any problems with the security.

Clicking either file will open it in your default text editor.

Tip: If the Send Email feature does not work on your computer, then you can simply email
support@mecaenterprises.com. For the MecaLog.txt file, simply click on the link at the bottom of the
screen, and then save the file to your desktop. Then you can email this file to use. Alternatively, you
can copy and paste the contents of the file into an email.

2.7 Set Background Colors – Lifting System and Lug Menu’s
This form allows the user to customize the background of the 3D graphic to appear as they wish. They
pick the Top, Intermediate and Bottom colors, and then a gradient between those selections is displayed
on the form. Click the “Reset to Default” button to restore to the default colors. Below is an example of
a changed background.

2.8 Menus

2.8.1 Lifting System Menu

MecaLug Software Help Manual Page 15

2.8.1.1 Lifting System Menu - Configuration Tab
The Configuration Tab is used to specify the configuration of lifting system that is being modeled. There
is a graphical representation of each of the configurations, and the one that is selected is Color, while
those note selected are Black and White.

2.8.1.2 Lifting System Menu - Lifting Tab

The lifting tab contents will vary depending upon which Configuration was selected on the first tab. As
values are entered into this tab, the graphic at the right is updated to reflect those value. The units
selected are the units which are to be entered. On this screen there is an option to select which lifting
lug is being used for each lifting point. If “None” is selected for the lug, the analysis only calculates the
loads in each cable and no analysis is performed of the lug (Since none was selected).

MecaLug Software Help Manual Page 16

The Lug entry will be explained later, but once defined this screen is used to indicate which lug is to be
used at each point. Once a lug is selected, then a rotation menu is available for that lug. The rotation is
used to specify the lug being rotated about the global lug coordinate system that would be at the center
of the hole.

If a RY value of 90 Deg is entered, then it means the lug will be rotated 90 Deg about the Y axis as shown
in the graphic above. The end result is shown below.

MecaLug Software Help Manual Page 17

Some of the Lifting System configurations are special cases that are most commonly found in lifting of
stacks, vessels or towers. These require the structure rotate from horizontal to vertical, and so the
software permits the user to specify the increments of rotation that are to be considered. An increment
of 10 deg is the default, and this is the recommended value for most scenarios.

MecaLug Software Help Manual Page 18

2.8.1.3 Lifting System Menu - Lug
The Lug tab is the tab where the lifting lugs are defined. If no lugs are defined, then the lifting system
calculates simply determine the cable loads. The user can specify one lug, or multiple lugs. All lugs
don’t have to be used, there could be extra entries on this Lug screen. If the Lug is entered, but not
selected for any of the lifting points on the Lifting tab, then no analysis is performed on the lug.

2.8.1.3.1 Add Lug

A Lug may be added by clicking the “Add Lug” button, or by right clicking and selecting the “Add” from
the context menu.

MecaLug Software Help Manual Page 19

When “Add Lug” is selected, then the Lug menu is launched. You enter all parameters necessary to
define the lug, just as you would do if performing a lug analysis; however, no loads are defined, because
the loads are being determined from the Lifting System analysis.

The “Lug Identifier” defaults to “Lug # X”, but the user can change that to a more meaningful name.

Note: A lifting system file has the extension *.lft, while a single lifting lug has the extension *.lug. A user
can save “Standard” or commonly used lugs into individual files. Then they can retrieve those standards
later by going to “File” “Open” in the Lug menu, and then finding those files. This feature can be used in
the Lifting system as well, you add a lug and then go retrieve the previously saved lug file to populate
the lug menu with all of those previously saved values.

2.8.1.3.2 Edit Lug

Once a lug is defined, it can be edited 3 ways;

a) Click “Edit Lug” at the bottom of the screen

b) Double Click the lug itself in the grid
c) Right click the mouse, and select “Edit” from the context menu

MecaLug Software Help Manual Page 20

2.8.1.3.3 Delete Lug
Once a lug is defined, it can be deleted 2 ways

a) Click “Delete Lug” at the bottom of the screen

b) Right click the mouse, and select “Delete” from the context menu

2.8.1.4 Lifting System – Perform analysis

Once the data is entered, the analysis can be performed by clicking “Analyze Lift” at the bottom right.
This will launch the output window with all calculations. If Lugs have been defined for the lifting points,
then the loads are applied to the lug and the output will include the calculation of stresses for those
loads.

MecaLug Software Help Manual Page 21

2.8.2 Lifting Lug Menu

2.8.3 Lug Menu – Configuration Tab

The configuration for the lug is selected on the Configuration Tab. The option selected is in color, and all
others are black and white.

MecaLug Software Help Manual Page 22

Based upon the configuration selected, the contents of the remaining tabs will change.

2.8.3.1 Lug Menu – Lug Geometry

The Lug Geometry screen is where all parameters related to the lug geometry are specified. As the
values are entered the graphic to the right is updated to reflect those values.

MecaLug Software Help Manual Page 23

2.8.3.2 Lug Menu – Cheek Plates
The cheek plates refer to the two circular plates that are located on each side of the lug (Similar to
cheeks on a face). These are typically used as spacers to ensure that the shackle doesn’t have too more
room to move from side to side. They can also distribute the bearing pressure of the shackle pin on the
lug. If there are no cheek plates, then this screen is not displayed.

2.8.3.3 Lug Menu – Attachment

The “Attachment” is referring to the structure or equipment to which the lug is welded. For those lugs
attached to cylinders, there are local stress considerations which are taken by MecaLug. These special
configurations shown below (those without a red line through them).

For these configurations the local stress of the Pipe and/or Lug acting on the cylinder are calculated
using WRC 537 (WRC 107). The software allows the option of adding a reinforcement pad in order to

MecaLug Software Help Manual Page 24

distribute the loads into the cylinder. Please note that the most accurate way to analyze these types of
local stresses is by using Finite Element Analysis. We are using WRC 537 as a numerical way to
approximate the stresses, and the user is expected to exercise judgement as to the appropriateness of
using this method on a given situation.

These configurations consider the local loads by designing the stiffening ring and shell combination to
handle those loads. The analysis is performed using the classic reference “Formulas for Stress and
Strain” by Roark.

All other configurations consider no local stresses on the attachment. The weld stresses are calculated,
but no other local stress checks are performed.

2.8.3.4 Lug Menu – Shackle

MecaLug has a database of common shackle sizes and model numbers as supplied by The Crosby Group.
The user is not restricted to use just these shackles, but it’s not possible to include every shackle
supplier, and it seems they all provide similar sizes and capacities. The shackle model number and
capacity are selected, and all remaining values are populated from the Shackle database inside
MecaLug.

MecaLug Software Help Manual Page 25

There are several clearance inputs that the user can specify, to better illustrate these parameters it is
recommended that the user select “Key Diagram” to see a sketch illustrating these parameters.

2.8.3.5 Lug Menu – Material

The material is specified on the Material tab. There is a Material Database, which can be accessed by
clicking the “Material Database” button at the bottom of the material lookup. The materials
specification dropdown will show all materials which are in the Material Database. The user can add
materials to the Materials Database as well.

MecaLug Software Help Manual Page 26

Once the user clicks “OK” a Snap-shot of those properties are entered in the material screen.

2.8.3.6 Lug Menu – Loads

One or more load cases can be specified by the user. The software will analyze the lug for each load
case entered. The coordinate system for the loads entered is as shown in the graphics window. Loads
can be added, inserted or deleted by clicking on the appropriate button at the bottom of the grid. Also
the user can Right click their mouse, and the same options will be presented as well as a Copy option.

MecaLug Software Help Manual Page 27

MecaLug Software Help Manual Page 28
2.8.3.7 Lug Menu – Analyze Lug
Once the lug has been defined then an analysis can be performed by clicking “Analyze Lug” at the
bottom right corner.

The software will calculate stresses for all load cases using the criteria in ASME BTH-1 for the design
criteria. All output is based upon the following color coded system:

Black – Neutral input, not indicating pass or fail

Green – Pass and meets the requirements

Red – Failing to meet the requirements

MecaLug Software Help Manual Page 29

3 Output Window
When the data entry is complete, then press the Analysis button. Pressing this will perform the
calculations and open the output. On the left side of the screen is the Table of Contents.

Table of Contents:
The Table Of Contents (TOC) is a list of the major sections of the output report. Each entry represents a
section of the output report, and clicking these entries will scroll the output window on the right side of
the screen to the TOC section selected. Furthermore, each TOC entry has a checkbox to the left. The
TOC’s which are checked are the sections that will be included in the output report. You can manually
check or uncheck the items that you would like to include, or you can right click your mouse while in the
TOC section and a menu will pop up. From here you have several options to select from:

Uncheck All – Uncheck All Items

Save TOC – In some instances there may be certain TOC sections which you would typically like to
include in your final report. The Save TOC option lets you save all of the Checked/UnChecked settings to

a file. This *.TOC file can then be Retrieved in the future, and the TOC Check/Uncheck settings will be
retrieved. Please note that this feature is only useful when running the same type of analysis. For
example, If you Save the TOC when working on a Building, it will not be useful to retrieve the TOC when
working on a Chimney, since the TOC entries will not be even remotely similar.

Retrieve TOC – Retrieves the TOC Checked/Unchecked entries which were saved using Save TOC.

All output in the TOC or the body of the output is based upon the following color coded system:

Black – Neutral input, not indicating pass or fail

Green – Pass and meets the requirements

Red – Failing to meet the requirements

This system allows the user to quickly scan the TOC and see Red or Green and determine if there are any
problem areas in the report.

Generating Output Report:

The right side is the output report, which contains all TOC entries. Once all of the TOC entries are
checked or unchecked as desired, the user can then click “Generate Output”. This will compile only the
Checked TOC entries into a single final document. From this output screen you can print the document
or save it in one of the following formats: html, pdf or rtf.
