1.2 Pre-Requisites
The software is based upon the ASME BTH-1 standard. The software is intended to supplement the
ASME BTH-1 standard and make it easier to implement the requirements in a Lug design, but it is not a
substitute for the standard itself. In order to fully use and understand the software, it is recommended
that the user own a copy of ASME BTH-1, and understand the principles and concepts. The software
follows this standard.

6) Upon Launching the Software, a Security Screen will probably appear. If the menu does not
appear, then you were probably taken into the software in Demo mode. Looking at the Title, if
“DEMO” appears at the beginning of the title bar at the top, then you are in demo mode. Click
“Security” and then “Activate”, and the security menu will appear as below:
Refer to your order information to determine if a Single User or Floating Network license have been
purchased, and the select the appropriate option and click continue.
i) Launch MecaLug
ii) Go to “Security” menu at the top,
and select “Deactivate
iii) Select “Deactivate License”
Once all information is entered, click “Floating Network Login”, on the lower left hand corner of form. If
a seat is available, then the screen will change as follows:
From this point, click “Use Full Version” in the lower right corner, and you will be taken into the full
version of the software.
If the software crashed unexpectedly, then it will take 5 minutes for the server to reset itself so that you
can log in again. In this event, you will see the same screen as if there were no seats available.
1.5.2.1 Troubleshooting
If you know that there should be a seat available, but you are still unable to log in, then here are the
steps to follow:
1) Ensure that all other users are out of the software. If someone crashed the program, rather
than close it normally, then it will take 5 minutes to reset.
2) Make sure you have an internet connection
3) If you have a firewall, temporarily disable it to see if that is the issue. If that is the issue, then
you need to allow MecaLug an exception to pass through the firewall.
4) If you are using a Proxy Server, then please see our Proxy server information for more tips.

The title bar displays the Module that is purchased; MecaLug or MecaLug Pro. The version number is
displayed. Also the path to the input file location. When MecaLug is opened, it always initially opens
the default file which was set by the user (To be discussed in greater detail later).
The controls at the right of the title bar are the typical windows controls, Minimize, Maximize and Exit
(Listed in order from Left to Right).
The Analysis selection screen is the first screen encountered when launching the software. This screen
only has one menu, and that is the Security menu. The Security menu is only displayed on this screen, it
is not displayed anywhere else in the software.
Activate – Go back to the initial activation screen where you can choose
to Activate a Single User license.
Floating Network – Here you can see the status of your floating network session. It will show the
number of seats available and all other relevant information. Also you can Log out of your current
session by clicking “Floating Network Logout”. Doing this will revert the software to Demo mode.
2.4 Units
On each menu there is an option to select the units to be either English or Metric. MecaLug has a very
useful feature in that the values throughout the software are automatically converted to the units
selected by the user. This means that if a user is more comfortable using English units, then all values
can be entered using English. If the calculations are required to be displayed in metric units, the user
simply needs to convert to Metric and then all values are converted automatically.
Note: Within the internals of the software all units are stored and manipulated as English units. If
metric are selected, the output interface then converts from English to Metric units. This is important
because there are instances where round-off error can cause a value to be represented slightly
different. For example, a user may intend to enter 6.35 mm, and it could sometimes be changed to
6.34999 mm.
MecaLug
Save As – Give the file a name, and then it will be saved with that name and a “.lft” extension added to
the end.
Open – Open an existing wind file. The files that MecaLug will open are *.lft files. Note: These files are
text formatted which can be opened with any text editor (i.e. notepad, wordpad, etc..) if you would like
to check the contents.
Save Current File as Default – This will save the current set of inputs as the “Default” file that is opened
each time you open MecaLug. This can be used as a tool to set up the program to have the entries that
you always want to appear when the software is opened. For example, if you live in a certain region
then the standard wind values for that region could be entered. The Project information could also be
entered so that it’s retrieved each time.
Tip: Since the default file is the file that is loaded each session, it is very easy to hit “Save” and overwrite
your original Default file with whatever is currently entered. Therefore, we recommend creating a
backup of your defaults, so that you can open and “Save Current File as Default”, in the event that you
corrupt your Default file.
Recent Files – This brings up a list of files recently saved. Select one of these files, and it will “Open”
that file.
Revision History – Displays the recent history of revisions that have been made to the software with
each version.
Revision History – Displays the recent history of revisions that have been made to the software with
each version.
Tip: If the Send Email feature does not work on your computer, then you can simply email
support@mecaenterprises.com. For the MecaLog.txt file, simply click on the link at the bottom of the
screen, and then save the file to your desktop. Then you can email this file to use. Alternatively, you
can copy and paste the contents of the file into an email.

2.8 Menus
If a RY value of 90 Deg is entered, then it means the lug will be rotated 90 Deg about the Y axis as shown
in the graphic above. The end result is shown below.
The “Lug Identifier” defaults to “Lug # X”, but the user can change that to a more meaningful name.
Note: A lifting system file has the extension *.lft, while a single lifting lug has the extension *.lug. A user
can save “Standard” or commonly used lugs into individual files. Then they can retrieve those standards
later by going to “File” “Open” in the Lug menu, and then finding those files. This feature can be used in
the Lifting system as well, you add a lug and then go retrieve the previously saved lug file to populate
the lug menu with all of those previously saved values.
For these configurations the local stress of the Pipe and/or Lug acting on the cylinder are calculated
using WRC 537 (WRC 107). The software allows the option of adding a reinforcement pad in order to
These configurations consider the local loads by designing the stiffening ring and shell combination to
handle those loads. The analysis is performed using the classic reference “Formulas for Stress and
Strain” by Roark.
All other configurations consider no local stresses on the attachment. The weld stresses are calculated,
but no other local stress checks are performed.
The software will calculate stresses for all load cases using the criteria in ASME BTH-1 for the design
criteria. All output is based upon the following color coded system:
Table of Contents:
The Table Of Contents (TOC) is a list of the major sections of the output report. Each entry represents a
section of the output report, and clicking these entries will scroll the output window on the right side of
the screen to the TOC section selected. Furthermore, each TOC entry has a checkbox to the left. The
TOC’s which are checked are the sections that will be included in the output report. You can manually
check or uncheck the items that you would like to include, or you can right click your mouse while in the
TOC section and a menu will pop up. From here you have several options to select from:
Save TOC – In some instances there may be certain TOC sections which you would typically like to
include in your final report. The Save TOC option lets you save all of the Checked/UnChecked settings to
Retrieve TOC – Retrieves the TOC Checked/Unchecked entries which were saved using Save TOC.
All output in the TOC or the body of the output is based upon the following color coded system:
This system allows the user to quickly scan the TOC and see Red or Green and determine if there are any
problem areas in the report.
