Modern English and Global English


A. Characteristist of Modern English
Modern English (sometimes called New English or Modern English, NE/ME) as
opposed to Middle English and Old English) is the form of English language used
since the Great Vowel Variation in England, which began in the late 14th century and
was completed around 1550.
1. Changes in phonetics, vocabulary and grammar
With some lexical differences, texts from the early 17th century, such as the works of
William Shakespeare and the King James Bible, are considered to be in modern
English, or more specifically, known as Early Modern English or Elizabethan English.
English was adopted in regions of the world, such as North America, the Indian
subcontinent, Africa, Australia and New Zealand through colonial colonization by the
British Empire.
Modern English has many dialects spoken in many countries around the world,
sometimes collectively referred to as the English Cultural Region. Dialects include
American English, Australian English, British English (containing British English,
Welsh English and Scottish English), Canadian English, Caribbean English, Hiberno
English, Indian English, Pakistani English, Nigerian English, New Zealand English,
Filipino English, Singaporean English and South African English.
According to Ethnologue, there are nearly 1 billion people who speak English as a
first or second language. English is spoken as a first or second language in many
countries, with the largest number of native speakers in the United States, United
Kingdom, Australia, Canada, New Zealand and Ireland; There are also large
populations in India, Pakistan, the Philippines and South Africa. English "has more
non-native speakers than any other language, is widely distributed around the world,
and is used for more purposes than any other language". The large number of
speakers, plus its worldwide presence, have made English the lingua franca ("lingua
franca") "of airlines, of seas and shipping, of computer technology, of science and
indeed of (global) communication".
2. Development and improvement in language use
Foreign languages are a means to penetrate and connect people, to "globalize"
themselves.
In economics, money has the function of exchange, is an equivalent object, is the
world currency, but in material and spiritual life, language is a means to connect
people all over the world together. He may be different in terms of race, ethnicity,
may exist in a small corner of the world, as long as he knows a language other than
his native language, he can communicate and interact with people who speak that
language. And so, the first difference is that the language barrier is narrowed, then the
world outside us is no longer separate from us. When we know how to use a foreign
language, especially when that language is a common language in the world, the
problem of integration becomes very small, as many columns of the magazine are
called "The world in the hollow of our hands". Currently, English plays the role of an
international language used in all fields and activities.
There are about four hundred million people in the world who speak this language
and English in the globalized world is called “Globish” (Global English). Learning
English is becoming more and more popular in our country, so if we master English,
we will have many opportunities to connect and penetrate this big world. However,
learning a foreign language depends on interests, purposes and conditions, so it is not
necessary to learn English, but we can learn a language other than English (such as
French, Japanese, German, Russian, Spanish, Portuguese ...). It is up to us to learn
which language is up to us, it does not detract from the value of the learner, as long as
we master it ourselves.

Foreign languages are not mere tools, soulless words, foreign languages are culture
itself.
Language is the material shell of thinking, language contains in it the objective
content of things and phenomena, of the material life of man. Therefore, learning a
foreign language means that we receive a second material system (besides our mother
tongue), which is as complete and complete as that first signal system in many
respects. Therefore, it is easy to understand why people with high proficiency are
more receptive to foreign languages than people with low levels of education (but not
except for cases of language aptitude). Language is culture, so learning a foreign
language must go hand in hand with learning culture and acquiring new scientific
knowledge. Learning a foreign language requires understanding the culture.
Therefore, students at foreign language schools are always trained with many subjects
about that country. These two are not separate.

Learning a foreign language is best when you are young and basically self-study,
especially while sitting in school.
Our brain is a complex and sophisticated processing organ, it is always filled with
knowledge, by personal experience… At a young age, the brain is still empty, not yet
"stressed" with many streams of knowledge, many complicated relationships, so
concentration is easier, so young people have to take advantage of their youth and
youth to learn culture and knowledge, including foreign languages. Scientific
documents show that people who learn foreign languages at a young age easily
receive and master skills than older people. Many young people when sitting on
school chairs, in university lecture halls just try to study for exams through foreign
languages (because foreign languages are difficult subjects to learn), their reasoning is
that they graduate from school to work and then learn, because foreign languages that
are not used will be forgotten. It is a fallacy, wanting to learn a foreign language well
is a process of accumulation and hard work, not "instant noodles", which can be used
today, even less fluently, especially for foreign languages of science and art majors.

B. Global English and its affection

1. The process of English becoming an international language


Over thousands of years of development, learning English today has become an
international language spoken by a large percentage of the world's population.
According to statistics, this is the third most spoken mother tongue in the world, after
Chinese and Spanish. It is also a widely spoken second language and an official
language in major organizations including the European Union, the British
Commonwealth and especially the United Nations. The English language has gone
through many steps of change and development to become the modern English
language learner with a variety of sentences and rich vocabulary as it is today. The
common English that we widely use today is modern English, which originated in the
16th century and the person most credited with this evolution is the famous English
writer, William Shakespeare.

The forerunner of Business English was when it began to be used in the 1970s in
international transactions. Since the development of the Internet in the 1980s, English
has become more and more popular among Internet users. By the 1990s, schools in
Europe, America, Asia or even Africa had made English a compulsory or elective
subject for their students.

2. The urgency of English in the development trend of the world

Everything is immutable, change is an inevitable law of nature. The world develops


because of human development and that development is always associated with the
development of language. The development trend of the world today is globalization -
in other words, turning the world we live in into a "flat world" - where people can
erase all boundaries and connect with each other becomes easier than ever.

But in order to realize "flattened world", it is necessary to have a condition that is


decisive for the whole process, a boundary that, when this boundary is removed, other
boundaries can immediately disappear, that is the language boundary. The world will
be completely "flat" when all can find a common language - a common language to
understand and share together. That common language is English.

3. The influence of global English in international connection and


communication

The world is on the way of globalization, the distance is reduced due to fast traffic,
the border is increasingly open, people have the opportunity to go around the world,
do business in other countries, participate in world trade. All countries are somehow
connected to each other, so they need a common means of communication - a single
language. In the context of growing globalization, English is recognized as the most
convenient language as an ideal language.
