Task 3 Tibon Hermie Lyn

1) A medical study examined the relationship between age and cholesterol levels in 9 individuals. It recorded their ages and cholesterol levels. 2) The study calculated the correlation coefficient (r-value) between age and cholesterol and performed a t-test to determine if the relationship was statistically significant. 3) The t-test showed no significant relationship between age and cholesterol levels at the 0.05 significance level, so the null hypothesis that there is no relationship was not rejected.

NAME: HERMIE LYN TIBON INSTRUCTOR: LIEZEL CHAN

TASK: TASK 3 SUBJECT: ED201

A medical study wanted to determine whether there is a relationship between the age of a
person and the amount of cholesterol in his body. He randomly selected 9 individuals and
recorded their age and cholesterol level. The data are shown below.

Cholesterol,
Age, x

a. Test if there is a significant relationship between the age of a person and the amount of
cholesterol in his body. He randomly selected 9 individuals and recorded their age and
cholesterol level at 0.05 level.

Age, Cholesterol, CRTICAL VALUE:::

x y TABLE
Age, x 1 df = n-2 = 9-2=7
Cholesterol in excel: 0.881*(SQRT((8-2)/(1-0.881^2)))
=1.721783 alpha: 0.05
,y -0.6729 1

*Test if the relationship is significant at 0.05 level of significance

Solution:
S1. Ho: There is no significant relationship between the age of a person and the amount
of cholesterol in his body
Ha: There is a significant relationship between the final exam grades of students
enrolled in Algebra and Calculus classes.
S2: ⍺ = 0.05
S3: r-value: -0.6729
S4: test statistic or computed: t-computed: 1.721783
S5: critical value: t-critical : 2.365 (according to table) df=n-2= 9-2=7
S6. Ho is not rejected since ⎜1.722⎜< ⎜2.365 ⎜ at 0.05 level
Meaning: Ho is True. It means there is no significant relationship between the age of a
person and the amount of cholesterol in his body at 0.05 level. Further we fail to reject the
Null hypothesis.
b. Give the regression model when r is significant.
