If + Past Perfect Would have+Past
Participle
If I had gone to the party I would have seen you

Use:

• To describe a hypothetical situation or event in the past. The past


situation or event is contrary to known facts, i,e, it is an unreal or
impossible situation.

If you had been more careful last night , you wouldn't have
broken your leg.

Exercise 1

Read the conditional sentences below and answer the questions that follow.

1. If it hadn’t rained yesterday, we would have had a picnic.


a) Did it rain?
b) Did we have a picnic?
2. If you had come to the party, you would have met my cousin.
a) Did you come to the party?
b) Did you meet my cousin?
3. I wouldn’t have gone to the movie if I had known it was scary.
a) Did I go to the movie?
b) Was it scary?
c) Do I like scary movies?
4. If I had known he was a careless driver, I wouldn’t have lent him my car.
a) Did I know that he was careless driver?
b) Did I lend him the car?
5. If the bus had been on time, we wouldn’t have missed our appointment.
a) Was the bus on time?
b) Did he miss our appointment?
6. If I had had a lot of homework last night, I wouldn’t have gone to the
cinema.
a) Did I have a lot of homework last night?
b) Did I go to the cinema last night?
Third conditional sentences
Exercise 2

Rewrite the sentences and use the third conditional. Keep the same meaning.

Example My car was out of order. I did not drive her there.

If my car had not been out of order, I would have driven her there.

1. She did not give me her phone number. I could not call her.

Write a sentence in the third conditional for each of the following situations.

1. They didn’t arrive on time because they took the wrong road.
2. Andrew didn’t get the job because he didn’t have much experience.
3. Ellen didn’t pass her driving test because she didn’t stop at the red light.
4. Barbara didn’t buy the red dress because it didn’t fit.
5. The Smith’s didn’t go to Hawaii for their vacation because the airplane
tickets were too expensive.
6. I got a parking ticket because I forgot to put money in the parking meter.
7. The cake burned because she didn’t set the timer on the stove.
8. Annie didn’t eat her dinner because she wasn;t hungry.
9. We didn’t go skiing last weekend because there wasn’t much snow on the
mountain.

Exercise 5

Complete the following sentences using your own words
