Activity three
1 Calculate the arithmetic mean for each of the following sets of data. To do this, add up all the
numbers in each category and divide by how many numbers there are. For example, to calculate
the average for male participant 1:

Add up all the numbers: 52 + 48 + 55 + 45 = 200

200
Divide by how many numbers there are: =50

Unit 4: Enquiries into current research in health and social care

Activity four
The following participants took part in a questionnaire survey about breast-screening habits. 55 were
aged between 24 and 30; 81 were aged between 31 and 37, 76 were aged between 38 and 44, 82
were aged between 45 and 51, 72 were aged between 52 and 59, 59 were aged between 60 and 67,
47 were aged between 68 and 74 and 56 were aged over 74.

Calculate the percentage of the total survey that each group represents, and present your findings as
a bar chart.

You can calculate the percentages using the following formula:

number of participants∈a group

×100=percentage
total number of particpants
