EDUC 5810-01 - AY2024-T1

Portfolio Activity Unit 2

Instructor: Dr. Gloriana Jensen

Institution: University of the people

Date: 21st September 2023

1
Introduction

The statement "A Changing World Demands Changing Skills" resonates deeply with my role as

an educator. In a world characterized by ongoing transformations, the skills needed to thrive are

continuously evolving. This portfolio reflects on my interpretation of this statement and its

influence on my educational practices.

Adaptability and Lifelong Learning

The dynamic nature of the world necessitates adaptability as a fundamental skill. As an educator,

my primary goal is to instill adaptability in students by fostering a growth mindset. Encouraging

lifelong learning and the ability to navigate change are essential components of my teaching

philosophy (Dweck, 2006).

Critical Thinking and Problem-Solving

To navigate the complexities of our ever-changing world, critical thinking and problem-solving

skills are paramount. I employ inquiry-based learning and real-world problem-solving scenarios

to nurture these skills in my students, enabling them to tackle multifaceted challenges (Facione,

2015).

Technological Literacy

In today's digital era, technological literacy is indispensable. I integrate technology into the

learning process, emphasizing not only its usage but also the critical evaluation and responsible

application of technology by students (International Society for Technology in Education, 2016).

2
Global Citizenship

Our interconnected world demands the cultivation of global citizenship. As an educator, I foster

cultural awareness, empathy, and an understanding of global issues to prepare students to be

responsible global citizens (UNESCO, 2014).

Social and Emotional Skills

A changing world requires the development of social and emotional skills. I prioritize creating a

classroom environment that nurtures skills such as empathy, communication, and resilience,

alongside academic knowledge (Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning,

2020).

Conclusion

In conclusion, the statement "A Changing World Demands Changing Skills" underscores the

pivotal role of educators in preparing students for an uncertain future. I continually adapt my

teaching methods and priorities to emphasize adaptability, critical thinking, technological

literacy, global citizenship, and social and emotional skills. By equipping students with these

evolving skills, I aim to empower them not only to thrive in the present but also to shape a

brighter future for themselves and the world at large.
