All the procedures in Unit 4 will require you to mention
Unit 4? the preparation of the surgery ( and decontamination
room), list the instruments and materials needed and
used, demonstrate knowledge of the role of the
instruments and assist the dentist/patient.

Preparation appointment
Mixing of alginate to be explained in detail, measure scoop, measure water, shake container, check
expiry date, mix them together, obtain creamy bubble-free consistency, load the impression tray, hand
it to the dentist.
Preparation of the surgery (including the decontamination room)

Assisting the dentist and the patient
▪ Luting cement - you have to explain the chemical name, ratio, mixing and setting
time. Always follow manufacturer’s instructions.
▪ Post-operative instructions may be needed

Impression stage
▪ Details about the “wax rims” on which the bite stage is performed
▪ On the same stage, secondary impressions may be taken in a special tray.
▪ The wax rims must be disinfected before and after the patient
