REVIEW:

What was the last topic discussed yesterday?

What is history?

Can we use History as an approach in criticizing a text?

Major Assumptions of Historical Approach

The basic premises of Historical Criticism, is that literary

meaning is grounded in the author. Author’s History

Historical Criticism is the search for the Author’s true intention

Explores historical, political, social and cultural context that

influences the work of literature.

What particular event of the author did he write the literature?

What event in the author’s life influences him to write it?

Note: Without review, individuals can get stuck at a particular stage

of development. It provides a range of strategies for enable to move
forward.

Follow up HOTS questions:

 How do you find the activity? Why?

 Do others failed to have the correct answer?
 Why do you think we review the last topic?

*According to Vijayaratman (2012), critical thinking aids learners to

relate and actively respond to real-world demands and HOTS plays

an important role for it helps to stimulate learner’s critical thinking.

B. Development Discussion:

READER-RESPONSE THEORY

There are three (3) main entities involved in the reading.

A. The writer (Author)
B. The Text
C. The Reader

Reader-Centered Criticism

This theory of criticism begins with the experiences of individuals

when they read texts. A reader response critic would maintain that a
text does not exist in a real sense as ‘words on the page.’ It only
takes on an existence when it enters the mind of someone reading it.

Texts can never enter the mind in a neutral, objective way, because
as readers, we all give slightly different meanings to the individual
words we read, and we put them together in different ways.

Reader-Response Criticism

In this Criticism, we don’t question the text alone. We question self as

a reader.
how we interpreted it,
what do we feel,
what we think,
what is our judgement.

QUESTIONS IN CRITICIZING:

Is there any flaw in the plot?

What is the theme and the purpose of the language/text used
Why do you like it or why not?
Do you agree with the author?

C. Engagement
Activity: Collaborative Activity
Read the excerpt “Pedagogic”, and draw anything according to your
own interpretation.

*Under collaborative learning

there is more retention on the
part of the students and yields
good results. According to
Johnson (1986) there is
persuasive evidence that
cooperative teams achieve at
higher levels and retain in
information longer than learners
who work quietly as individuals.

D. Assimilation I What I have learned?

Instruction: Write whether the statement/question being asked

is a “Reader-response ” or “Historical” approach

1. In this criticism, the critic seeks author’s biography and thus

includes his/her history.

2. In this criticism, the reader is the main partakers in creating

meanings out of the literature.

3. It is related to the systematic study of the past.

4. It is related only to the reader’s responds in interpreting the

text.

5. In this approach the text and author are meaningless not until
it is read by the reader.

6. One purpose of this criticism is to know about the author and

the political, economical, and sociological context of his times
in order to truly understand his works.

7. In this criticism, reader can track the issues, news or events

from the literature.

8. Noli Me Tangere and El Filibusterismo were criticized to know

what situation is Dr. Jose Rizal and the Filipinos were having.
What criticism was used?

9. You read a poem, revised it according to your own

interpretation what do you think literary approach did you use?

10. It means that text is an experience not an object.

ANSWER:

*The assessment used employs Blooms taxonomy which includes

questions anchored to knowledge domain, psychomotor domain, and
affective domain.

VI. REFLECTION Take away
Reflection:

Try to come up with your logical reflection with this quotation:

FOR READERS, TEXT IS AN EXPERIENCE NOT AN OBJECT.

Question to Pounder: Why do we need to read?

*According to Kirkham (1997), reflective learning supports life-long

learning by cultivating insight, increasing self-awareness and
allowing for deeper understanding of analysis and evaluation to
strengthen critical inquiry and inform practice.
