Mechanical Fishing
Bumper Sub
Weatherford's mechanical fishing bumper sub is used to
remove stuck fish or to release a spear or an overshot from a
fish.
The bumper sub is installed in the fishing string, directly above
the attachment tool. Lowering the string at a rapid rate until the
hex guide sub strikes the lower sub, which produces a sharp
downward blow. Raising the string until the hex guide sub
strikes the upper portion of the stem produces a sharp upward
blow.

Features, Advantages and Benefits

— The mechanical fishing bumper sub is easy to operate.
— Rugged construction and ease of maintenance extend the
life of the tool and enhance performance reliability.

Mechanical Fishing Bumper Sub

Equipment
• Stem incorporates the piston, hex stem, and lower sub in one piece.
• Hex guide sub drives the stem and is welded around the hex stem with sufficient
clearance for free travel and fluid passage.
• Close tolerances on the body provide a positive seal between the body and the piston.
• Two special pump cups on the piston end of the stem are molded to close tolerances to
accomplish a perfect seal.
Assembly
1. Install the two piston cups with the lips facing outward in the external grooves on the
stem.
2. Install the body over the piston cups. The two ends of the body are identical.
3. Make up the body to the hex guide.
4. Make up the upper sub to the body.
Operation
1. Install the bumper jar in the fishing string directly above the attachment tool being run.
2. Produce a downward blow by rapidly lowering the string until the hex guide sub strikes
the lower sub.
3. Produce an upward blow by raising the string until the hex guide sub strikes the upper
portion of the stem.
Maintenance
1. Unscrew the hex guide sub from the lower end of the body.
2. Slide out the stem out.
3. Clean all parts.

Note: Remove the upper sub to make cleaning easier.

4. Replace the pump cups on the piston, if necessary, and lubricate as needed.

Packing Loading Instructions

Until packing loaders have been ordered and received, the following instructions apply.
1. Install the piston cups on the Hex Bumper Jar stem as follows:
2. Soak the piston cups in hot water (about 160°) for 3 minutes.
3. Stretch the piston cups over the stem as shown in the drawing. If hot water is unavailable, use two
screwdrivers to stretch the piston cups over the stem, taking care not to cut the edges of the piston
cups.)

Note: To prevent cutting the piston cups, wrap a sheet of about 0.005-in. thick brass shim stock around
the cups and piston head when assembling the Bumper Jar Stem with bodies that are bored flush
with top of box threads. When the O-Ring Bumper Jar is modified to use the pump up-type packing,
the two inside O-Ring grooves will not cut it and may be left as they are without affecting the
integrity of the tool.

Additional Notes
1. Assemble the cone and sleeve in position.
2. Coat the cone, sleeve, and packing I D with white grease.
3. Slide the two packing cups over the cone, onto the sleeve. Packing slips must face away from each
other as shown in the drawing.
4. Remove the sleeve from the cone, and slide the sleeve over the end of the bumper jar stem with the
flanged end out.
5. Slide one packing cup off the sleeve, into innermost groove. Slide the other cup into the end groove.
6. In extreme cold, soak packing in hot water (about 160°) for 3 minutes before loading.
