Oeeten ‘(1 O)Fibre to Fabric Answer Key 4 Discovering Science Grade 7 (Concept Book) | Practice Zone 1) 1. Some source of plant fibres are cotton plant, jute plant, flax plant, coconut, etc.and the sources of animals fibres re silkworms,sheep,yak,camel,rabbit.etc. 2. Plant fibres are made of cellulose. Some of the examples of plant fibres are cotton, jute, flax and coir. Animal fibres are made of protein. Some examples of animal's fibres are wooland silk. | Practice Zone 2) 1. Wool obtained from Angora goat is called Mohair-This type of wool is highly durable as compared to the other types of wool.Ithasa lustrous and smooth texture and so it does not causes any itching on the skin. 2. Wool is very good for regulating body temperature due to its physical structure. Wool fibres have litele pores which trap still air in them. Air being a poor conductor of heat doesn't allow the heat of the body of a person to get exchanged with the environment making it a suitable fabric for cold weather. | Practice Zone 3 1. Wool is used to make garments like sweaters, jackets and suits. Wool is also used to make blankets, bed sheets and carpets. It is also used as lining material in boots, hats and gloves. Wool is used as padding or filling in pillows, couches and futons. 2. Processes involved in making of woollen fabri a. Rearingandbreedingofsheep _b. Shearing . Scouring d. Drying e. Sorting f. Picking g Cardingand combing fh, Spinning 1. Dyeing j- Weaving and knitting e Zone 4 ) 1. Characteristics of silk fibre:+ a. Lustre—silk fibre possesses high lustre due to its natural structure. b. Strenj is the strongest natural fibre. 2. Afemale silk moth is bigger in size as compared to the make silk moth. Instead they should be dry-cleaned. b. Chlorine bleaches like sodium chlorite should not be used. ¢. To treat the stains on the fabric hydrogen peroxide should be used d. To store silk, wrap the clothes in fine soft natural fabric that can breathe rather than in plastic bags. 2. To avoid fading of silk, cold water should be used and if the water is hard,a pinch of ammonia can be added in it. My Observations Chemistry Grade 7 (Workbook) “Check Point 1. a. Australia and New Zealand b.Llamaandalpaca —c. larva d. Mulberry e.China 2 aFalse bTrue False False eTrue 3. Picking—Process of removing burr from wool Shearer—*a person who removes the fleece of sheep Merino—best quality wool Reeling—process of obtaining silk fibre from cocoon, Muga—high quality silk Mohair—wool obtained from theAngora goat 4. a.Silkworm b.Reeling 5. Fibre is the basic unit of fabric. Fibre can be obtained from plants like jute or animals like the silkworm. 6. Wool canalso be obtained from the following animals: Angora goat—The wool fibre obtained from Angora goat is lustrous and smooth and is highly durable as compared to most varieties of wool. Angora rabbit —The wool fabric obtained from them has the best insulating properties and is thin, lightweight.and shiny. 7. Shearingis the first step in the processing of wool. In this process, the hairy coat (fleece) ofthe sheep is removed along with the thin layer of skin. Scouring is the second step. In this process, sheared wool is washed in hot water and detergent to remove the dirt, dustand greese. 9 Gone © scanned with OKEN ScannerChapter 10: Fibre to Fabric Answer Key 8 Due toits soft and shining characteristic, silk is considered a luxurious fabric and is used for making clothes for special occasions. It is also used as a garment fabric in gowns, shirts and scarves. lt is the most preferred fabric for Indian sarees and kurtas. It is also used for bed sheets, blankets, pillow covers, curtains, cushion coversand table cloths. 9, The pupa stage marks the conversion of the larva to the adult silkworm. After a few days, the larva stops eating and starts weaving its cocoon, a net to hold itself. It secretes a liquid from the glands present in its head and swings its head in a movement similar to the figure ‘eight’ This liquid which is mostly made of protein, solidifies in air and gives the rigid structure of the cocoon. The cocoon protects the worm during the pupa stage. The silk worm stays in the cocoon for about 2-3 weeks. 10. a. Carbon monoxide poisoning can take place in the rearing rooms due to the use of charcoal fires, tomaintain warm temperatures. b. Respiratory problems such as asthma are very common in people working in the silk industry. 11. To obtain continuous silk fibre, the silkworms aren't allowed to emerge from the cocoons as this breaks the continuity of the fabric. Instead the cocoons are boiled once they are formed to remove the gum like substance that holds the structure of the cocoon together: This loosens the fibre in the tightly woven cocoon. Each cocoon can then be unravelled to obtain a 800 metre long fibre. This process is called reeling. 12. Mooga silk is of golden color with a glossy appearance. Its highly durable and clothes made of this silk lasts for decades with the brightness increasing after every wash. Eri silk is obtained from the worm Samia synthis ricini. It is of woolly white color: tis obtained from the worms that feed on castor plants. 13, We should avoid doing the following things to woollen garments because:- a. Drying garments in direct sunlight causes the fabric to lose its natural appearance and turns it yellowish, b. Hanging stretches the garment because of all the weight from the water and causes it to lose its shape 14, Silk should be stored in natural fabrics like cotton as it helps the silk to breathe and thus avoids ‘causing yellowing and mildew.
