Co 1 Science 5 Repaired

The document discusses a Grade 5 science lesson on waste management and the 5Rs - reduce, reuse, recycle, recover, and repair. Students will classify materials that can be reduced, reused, and recycled from their homes and communities. They will then design and make a useful product out of local, recyclable solid and liquid materials. The lesson defines each of the 5Rs and provides examples of how to implement them to better manage waste and care for the environment. As an activity, students will work in groups to apply the waste management concepts.

IV. PROCEDURES

A. Reviewing past lesson or An

presenting the new lesson. Let’s go back to the properties of different materials around you those
that can be found at home and in your local community.

Let’s identify if the materials are useful or harmful for us.

(Teacher will show some pictures and the learner will identify their
properties)

B. Establishing a purpose of the Can you recognize the process or way by which you can help to save
new lesson ( Motivation) the environment at home in the community through waste
management?

(The teacher will give each group a puzzle to solve and identify)
Which of these are still useful to us?
Which of these are cannot be reused?
How are you going to disposed these materials?
C. Presenting examples/instances For today’s lesson, you will think of some ways by which we can identify
of the new lesson. materials and classify them it can be reduced, reuse and recycle.
Waste management is the process by which waste is collected,
transported, and disposed after vital treatment. Wastes need to be
monitored and managed properly in order to avoid causing harm to the
health and the environment. Materials that no longer consider useful are
called wastes.
D. Discussing new concepts and We need to take good care of our environment by being responsible in
practicing new skills #1 managing our waste. We can do this by
practicing the 5Rs of waste management:
reduce, reuse, recycle, recover and repair.

(Insert Rasabasa)
REDUCE simply means to lessen the amount of waste in the
environment. We reduce the use of materials by limiting the purchase of
new things and by avoiding the use of disposable materials. It is
therefore, important to rethink on kind of products we are going to
purchase and whether these products would benefit both humans and
the environment.
We can do the following:

1. Buy rechargeable batteries instead of disposable batteries. This way,

we can minimize waste and save money.
2. Buy products in bigger packs than those packed in small sachets.
Use Eco bag when you do shopping.
3. Another way to reduce waste is to reuse materials(plastics).
4.Use tumbler to lessen drinking using bottled water.

REUSE means to use the same materials as many times as possible.

We can reuse materials that serve a
purpose repeatedly and for a long time. Examples are as follows:

1. Use reusable containers for storing food or drink.

2. Avoid buying new materials when you still have supplies that can be
reused.
3. Use ecobags when going to the market or grocery store.
4. Give used clothes to others who needs them.
5. Conduct a garage sale.
RECYCLE means to use the material again in another way or for
another purpose. We can recycle by utilizing different materials to
create a new product. Recycling is different from reusing. Recycling
produces a new material out of discarded ones, while reusing uses the
same material again for the same or different purpose. An example is
the use of plastic bottles as pencil holder. Recycling prevents wastage
of a material that can actually be useful for a different purpose. It also
reduces the use of raw materials and provides a source of income to
families by selling the new products, they formed from discarded
materials.

E. Discussing new concepts REPAIR means to fix anything broken to make them useful again. We
and practicing new skills #2 can repair broken or damaged materials instead of buying new ones.
Some materials just need a little repair to serve their function again.
Repairable materials include furniture, appliances, and clothes. Instead
of discarding broken or busted materials, they can be checked for
repairability. If still repairable, these should be repaired instead of
buying new materials to replace them.

RECOVER involves getting materials or substances from garbage and having

these processed then reused. To recover, preparation and treatment of waste
materials are done with the use of technology in order to produce energy from
waste. Plastic-to-oil technology is one way of generating energy from plastic
wastes. This method involves heating plastic wastes in the presence of water
and processing them to produce crude oil. Then, the oil can be used as a
source of energy later on.
Recovering wastes is not limited to recovering energy. It also involves
segregation of materials in a recovery facility. Collected garbage does not go
straight to dumpsites. Most of the time, the wastes are segregated in a
Material Recovery Facility (MRF). In an MRF, collected garbage is segregated
in order to recover recyclables and biodegradable materials that can be
used as compost ingredients.
F. Developing Mastery (Leads to
Formative Assessment)

G. Finding practical applications of GROUP ACTIVITY

concepts and skills in daily living
H. Making generalizations and Reduce- means to minimize the wastes. It can be done by using less materials
abstractions about the lesson. that are readily disposable. It simply means to lessen the amount of trash that
will add up to the environment.

Reuse- to use the same material as many times as possible. It can be reused
for their original purpose.

Recycle– to use the material again in another way or for another purpose.
Recycling produces a new material out of discarded one so it prevents waste
of a material that can actually be useful for a different purpose.

Repair– means to fix slightly broken things to make them useful again. Instead
of discarding broken or busted materials they can be checked if they are still
repairable. They should be repaired instead of buying new materials to replace
them\
Recover– involves getting materials or substances from garbage and having
them processed then
reused.

The ultimate goal of the 5Rs waste management is

to free us from any kind of garbage; a situation
rendered to as zero waste. Do you want to make
Mother Earth free of any kind of garbage? If yes,
you must always practice the 5Rs.

I.Evaluation

something that is useful.
