This study examines the role of social support in helping STEM students face challenges. It uses a case study design to understand this complex phenomenon in context. The population is STEM students from Gen. Tiburcio De Leon National High School who received support. Grade 11 students will be purposively sampled. Face-to-face interviews will be conducted privately using an audio recorder. Questions ask about STEM interests, challenges, and benefits. Data will be collected from May to June 2023 from section Wise students through 3-5 minute interviews.

CHAPTER III

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

Introduction

This chapter presents the description of the research processes used in exploring the role

of social support as an aid for STEM students in facing the challenges of their strand. The study

aims to investigate the impact of social support on the academic and emotional well-being of

students pursuing Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) Strand, which

are known to be highly challenging and demanding. The chapter covers the research design,

population and sample of the study, data gathering procedure, instrument of the study, and the

data processing used to address the research questions and achieve the objectives of the study.

Research Design

The research design will allow the researcher to gain a deep understanding of the role of

academic and social support in helping STEM students overcome the challenges they face. By

using a case study research design, the researcher will obtain rich and detailed data, which will

be helpful in understanding the complexity of the phenomenon within the real-life context of

the STEM high school.

According to Yin (2014), a case study approach is an appropriate research design for

exploring complex and unique phenomena in their real-life context.

Population of the Study

This study focuses on students who are pursuing STEM (Science, Technology,

Engineering, and Mathematics) and have completed at least one semester in the academic year

2022-2023.

Sample of the Study

The sample will consist of Grade 11 STEM students who have received either academic

or social support during their time in the strand. The researchers will use a purposive sampling

technique to select participants based on their availability and the research objectives. The

sample will exclude students who have shifted to a different strand before the data collection

period. The study aims to explore the role of social support in helping students cope with the

challenges of the STEM strand. To protect the privacy and safety of the participants, the data

collected will remain confidential.

Instrument of the Study

In this study, the researcher will conduct face-to-face interviews with STEM students to

gather data and information on the role of social support in facing the challenges of their strand.

The interviews will be conducted in a quiet and private location, and an audio recorder will be

used to ensure that all information is accurately captured.

Data Gathering Procedure

We employed interviews for the research's objectives. We may specifically collect the

data we're interested in by employing interviews as a data collection method. Using a personal

interview has the advantage of allowing us to ask the respondent our questions directly.

In terms of the questionnaire, we're utilizing an unstructured one that may be utilized to

gather qualitative data. The researchers will also feel satisfied in learning the information they

need thanks to the questions they utilized.

The following are the questions used in the interview.

1. What are the factors that influence senior high school students' interest and engagement in

STEM education?

2. What are the challenges that senior high school students encounter in STEM education and

how do they cope with them?

3. What are the potential benefits of STEM education for senior high school students and their

future career paths?

DATA PROCESSING

In May 2023, the consent letter was distributed by our researchers.

The consent letter is for us researchers to be approved to conduct surveys to

support our respective studies. Since the researchers were approved, all we need

to do is find respondents for us to get our expected satisfactory information. The

interviews are to be conducted between May and June. The respondents were

from the STEM strand, specifically the section Wise. The expected length of each

interview must be 3-5 minutes per respondent.
