Digital Frequency Meter

A digital frequency meter measures the frequency of a periodic electrical signal to three decimal places accuracy. It counts the number of oscillations that occur within time intervals. It can measure frequencies between 104 to 109 Hertz by counting oscillations periodically. The signal is converted to pulses and fed to a counter, which counts pulses over set time periods determined by a crystal oscillator time-based selector. This allows the frequency to be accurately calculated from the number of counts and time interval.

DIGITAL FREQUENCY

METER
What is A Digital Frequency Meter?
Digital frequency meter is a general purpose instrument that displays the
frequency of a periodic electrical signal to an accuracy of three decimal
places. It counts the number events occurring within the oscillations during
a given interval of time.

It counts the frequency periodically and can measure in the range of

frequencies between 104 to 109 hertz. The entire concept is based on the
conversion of sinusoidal voltage into continuous pulses ( 01, 1.0, 10
seconds) along a single direction.

Components used in A digital frequency meter

 Unknown frequency source.
 Amplifier
 Schmitt Trigger
 AND gate
 Counter
 Crystal oscillator
 time-based selector.
Unknown frequency source It is used to measure the unknown value
of input signal frequency.

Amplifier
It amplifies low-level signals to high-level signals.

Schmitt Trigger
It converts the analog signal into a digital signal in a pulse train form. It is
also known as ADC and basically acts as a comparator circuit.

And Gate: The output generated from an AND gate is obtained only
when the inputs exist at the gate. One of the terminals of the AND gate is
connected to Schmitt Trigger output, and another terminal is connected to
a flip flop.

Counter: It operates based on the clock period, which starts from “0”.
One input is taken from the output of the AND gate. The counter is
constructed by cascading many flip flops.

Crystal Oscillator: When a DC supply is given to a crystal

oscillator (frequency of 1MHz) it generates a sinusoidal wave.

Time based selector : It consists of a clock oscillator which gives an

accurate value. The clock oscillator output is given as input to Schmitt
Triger which converts sinusoidal wave into a series of square wave of same
frequency.
Working Principle :The unknown frequency signal is fed to Schmitt
triger. In a Schmitt triger the signal is converted into a square wave ,with
very fast rise and fall times. As a result the output from a Schmitt triger is a
train of pulses ,one pulse for each cycle of signal. The output pulses from a
Schmitt triger are fed to a start/stop gate ,when the gate opens the input
signal pass through the gate and are fed to an electronic counter .which
starts registering the input pulses.when the gate is closed it stops
counting .The counter displays the time interval b/w start and stop. This
interval is known as pulse rate and its frequency can be known by the
formula
F=N/T

Where

F=frequency of unknown signal

N=No.of counts displayed by the counter

T=time interval b/w start and stop

Advantages
The following are the advantages of digital frequency meter

 Good frequency response

 High sensitivity
 The production cost is low
