The Importance of Learning

Learning is to obtain new knowledge that will have a tremendous impact on our well-being. It is
important to learn new skills and techniques as learning allows an individual to be able to have an
intelligent conversation with other people. There might be an emergency situation that takes place at a
business and if a person has learned the necessary skills, then he or she could prove to be a great asset
to the company. After college students have learned all the educational knowledge, they can then move
forward in their lives to bigger and better things. An individual can tell a student how great learning is,
but a person must seek their own desire for learning. A person cannot expect to learn a new skill or
technique in one day. Learning takes precious time and hard effort. To become a good learner, a person
must have their mindset for learning and it has to be his or her choice to complete this task. For
example, when a student is in college and has to study for a test, he or she learns to memorize all the
facts and other important information prior to taking the test. Learning continues even after taking the
test. A student must be able to store all this information in their heads and use it for future references in
order for learning to be a valuable tool for life. A person can learn in various ways. There are resources
such as books, magazines, newspapers, and encyclopedias which can all be found at a local library. With
new knowledge come new technologies. The world of technology is growing every day which is why
learning is of great importance. Harris & Lambert (2003) argue that "professional learning is continuous
learning focused on the central goal of making a difference in the lives of diverse students".

Learning used to be achieving the ability to write, read, and do basic math. Learning doesn 't necessarily
mean a change in a person 's behavior (Houwer, Holmes, & Moors, 2013). The concept of learning has
reached far beyond just being able to read and write. Being able to use a computer, speak foreign
languages, and using the internet are all part of learning. There is an old saying which says practice
makes perfect. This is true of learning as a person must continue to practice in achieving his or her goals.
Some people have their own creative way of learning a skill or technique. A teacher might use flashcards
to help a student identify certain colors or numbers. Other students might write misspelled words
repeatedly on paper in order to spell it correctly on a spelling test. A teacher must have his or her own
technique of motivating a student to want to learn. Students will sometimes become withdrawn from
their teacher if the teacher introduces a new activity or project to work on. As a teacher, one must be
able to discover what type of interests a student has and how much knowledge does he have in relations
to the particular interest. Some say that learning causes a change in the behavior of an individual. After
receiving a grade of 100 or walking down the aisle in a cap and gown during graduation can be one of
the greatest gifts that a student can have as a result of learning.

Education plays a very important role today as it distinguishes who gets the higher paying jobs and
obtains more suitable living conditions. Highly skilled teachers are needed to educate the children and
help them to excel in their studies. Education is attending a high school, technical school, college, or
university to obtain valuable learning and knowledge of different subjects to use in the future. With a
good education, one can get promotions at their place of employment or become a professor at a
prestigious college or university. With all the different types of technology advancements, education is
needed by both parents and the students. There have been major changes in education throughout the
years as African American women in the 19th century did not have the privileges of having an education
and learning to read and right. Between 2009 and 2010, it was reported by the National Center for
Education Statistics that over 65% of associate and bachelor degrees were awarded to black women
(Helm, 2016). An important Supreme Court case revolved around education in the 1900s was Brown vs.
Board of Education (McBride, 2006). Blacks were allowed to attend the same schools as the whites after
the ruling of this case.

Modern technology could not be possible if it were not for education as one must become educated to
learn the different trades of a business and how to use the different machines and tools. Having a good
education allows an individual to be able to think things out rationally and not make hasty decisions
which could result in failure. By getting an education, we are able to learn about the different cultures of
other countries. We can also learn how to set up a business internationally. Today education has become
a major focus at fast food chains such as McDonald 's. Over $290,000 in scholarships was offered by
McDonald 's Canada and its franchises (McDonald 's, 2016). Education is gaining knowledge to be able to
think and make your own decisions. If people did not have the proper education, they would not be able
to know about the importance of healthy eating habits. People would not know which foods are good
and which foods are harmful to their health if they didn’t seek an education. Education allows our
doctors to be able to administer the proper medications to their patients to help prolong their lives.
There are a lot of teenage girls today who are pregnant. If they were not provided educational lessons
about teenage pregnancy, then they would not realize how bad drinking and smoking are. If teenage girls
continue their education, then they would understand the importance of having regular prenatal
checkups with their doctors.

In conclusion, through both learning and education, a person is able to gain knowledge. With the proper
learning skills received from getting a good education, an individual is on the road towards success and a
life filled with lots of enjoyment.
