Glossary
Fiction and non-fiction
Fiction is a text based on imagination. Non-fiction is a text based on fact.
Multisensory approach
A multisensory approach teaches reading and writing by listening, seeing, moving and touching.
This gives multiple pathways for the information to reach the brain. Teaching and learning in this
way is an exciting journey of discovery for children. It is a creative process, where learning is
fun.
Realia
Realia are real things that are brought to the class and used as a resource. For example, fruit,
empty food cartons, the contents of learners’ school bags or the view outside the classroom
window.
Storytelling
Storytelling is the telling of others about events in words, sound and/or images, often by
improvisation or exaggeration. Stories have been shared in every culture as a means of
entertainment, education, cultural preservation and teaching moral values. Stories need a plot,
characters and a narrative point of view.
