Section A [ 45 marks ]
Answer all questions.
1) The weight, in grams, of 15 randomly selected sweet potatoes grown with organic fertilizer are given
below:
113 101 87 94 126 128 111 96 89 102 106 89 105 119 88
(a) Determine the median and interquartile range of the weight of the sweet potatoes. [4 ]
Meanwhile, the median and interquartile range of the weight of the sweet potatoes grown with chemical
fertilizer are 110 g and 17 g respectively.
(b) Comment on the weight of sweet potatoes grown with chemical fertiliser compared to organic
fertiliser. [2 ]
2) A classification of 60 teachers from a school according to degree qualification and age group are
summarized in the table below.
Degree Age (Years)
qualification 23 – 30 31 – 40 > 40
Yes 14 25 8
No 2 5 6
(a) Find the probability that a randomly selected teacher has a degree qualification. [2]
(b) Given that the teacher has a degree qualification, find the probability that a randomly selected teacher
aged more than 40. [2 ]
(c) Determine whether the degree qualification and age group more than 40 are independent. [3]
4) Approximately 31.7% of the people in a city are lactose intolerance. A random sample of 150 individuals
in the city are selected.
(a) Determine the distribution of the sample proportion of people who lactose intolerance. [3 ]
(b) Find the probability that
(i) the sample proportion is more than 0.40, [3 ]
(ii) the sample proportion is within 0.10 of the population proportion. [4]
5) A new drug is prescribed for knee pain to 12 patients and it is found that the knee pain of eight patients
has been relieved by the drug. Carry out a test, at the 10% significance level, to determine whether the drug
has a success rate of at least 80%. [6 ]
6) A technician monitored the number of intranet disruptions per day of a company for 180 days. The results
of the monitoring are given in the table below.
The technician claims that the number of intranet disruptions per day can be modelled by a Poisson
distribution with a mean of 1.0. Perform a test, at the 5% significance level, to determine whether the
technician’s claim is justified. [8]
Section B [ 15 marks ]
Answer one question only.
You may answer all the questions, but only the first answer will be marked.
7) Three balls are chosen at random one by one from a box containing four red and three yellow balls.
(a) If the balls are chosen without replacement and X represents the number of yellow balls chosen,
(i) construct a probability distribution table for X, [4 ]
(ii) calculate the mean and variance of X. [5]
(b) If the balls are chosen with replacement and Y represents the number of yellow balls chosen,
(i) state the distribution of Y, [2 ]
(ii) calculate the mean and variance of Y. [4 ]
8) A company received a shipment of bolts to used in engineering applications. Assume that the breaking
torque, in Joule (J), of the bolts has a normal distribution with standard deviation of 5 J. A random sample
of 15 bolts is tested and their breaking torque, in J, are shown below:
107 109 111 111 113 113 113 114 114 114 115 117 119 122 124
(a) Calculate the unbiased estimate for the mean of the population of the breaking torque of the bolts.
[2 ]
(b) Find the probability that the mean breaking torque of the bolts is not less than 112 J. [4 ]
(c) Obtain a 90% confidence interval for the mean breaking torque of all bolts in the shipment. Interpret
your answer. [5 ]
(d) Determine the minimum sample size required if a 90% confidence interval for the mean breaking
torque of all bolts is between 113.0 J and 115.8 J. [4 ]
