This research paper analyzes the differences between descriptive and prescriptive grammar. Descriptive grammar objectively describes how a language is used by its speakers, without making judgments about correctness, while prescriptive grammar prescribes how a language should be used according to established rules. The paper provides examples to illustrate these concepts, such as how descriptive grammar would analyze sentence structures people use in daily life, while prescriptive grammar would consider some of those structures to be grammatically incorrect. It also notes that most language teachers use prescriptive grammar to inform students about standard rules, whereas descriptive grammar does not receive as much exposure.

Descriptive versus Prescriptive Grammar

Title: “Quest to analyze existing elements of Prescriptive and Descriptive Grammar”

Abstract

The cause of the creation of this research paper is to analyze the elements of
prescriptive and descriptive grammar present in the previous historic elements of
the world as well as the modern use of said terms in today’s modern literary
society. To understand the title it is crucial for us to take a brief look at the
meaning of descriptive and prescriptive grammar. Descriptive grammar has a
lot of standard and non-standard varieties, its structures and rules are used in
daily life by people from all age groups, it is a basic study of language. However
Prescriptive grammar specifies how a language should be used and the rules that
should be followed by the users of that particular language in a specific way.

Analyzing the meaning:

Descriptive Grammar

” Some more information displayed in the context of

descriptive grammar is that it describes the governance and phrase construction
of a sentence along with its syntactic rules and structure. A descriptive study does
not hold the goal of judging what represents good or bad language, correct or
incorrect word and sentence structures or the right and wrong grammatical
forms, hence it is
non-judgmental in nature.

People who identify the ways that the grammar of a language is used in various
way and contexts for a number of purposes are typically linguists, anthropologists,
ethnographers, psychologists and other researchers. (Books that describe and
present the grammar of any language are called reference grammars, or
sometimes "a grammar" by non-specialists.) In this sense, phrases like "
or " are only examples of how language is
properly used by its natural or default speakers. The understanding and
creation of language is frequently influenced by societal and cultural factors
which is taken into account by a competent descriptive grammar, among other
things. In an academic sense, a language's descriptive grammar is a theory
that aims to explain how a certain language works. Some languages are
effective while that may not be the case for other languages. In terms of
anthropology, a Descriptive grammar aims to create syntactic principles based on
how a language actually functions. Utilised for communication but not in
accordance with these regulations.

Perspective Grammar- On the other side, a prescriptive grammar displays how a

language should be used and what grammatical rules should be observed. A
unique perspective on language assumes a division between "good grammar"
and "bad grammar," and its main perception is on traditional grammar. This
approach to grammar frequently creates numerous ideas, opinions, and
judgements concerning how and when grammar rules should be employed among
native speakers of almost any language. As a result of breaking at least two
grammar rules, the phrase
” for instance, would be seen as being grammatically wrong
because it goes up against at least a couple of grammatical rules object forms
of pronouns " " should not be used in the sentence-initial or subject-
noun position, and (2) only one noun or noun phrase can play the role of the
sentence subject, and in this case, "we" .Prescriptive grammars supply the rules
for using or not using specific grammar constructions.

To simplify the descriptive and prescriptive grammatical paradox and their practical
characteristics, most language hobbyists are likely to be descriptive
grammarians who analyse and explain a language's functions and uses while most
practicing teachers probably work with prescriptive grammars in the educational
environment which leads to the learners being aware of only the prescriptive
grammar in contrast to the descriptive side of grammar that has a lack of
exposure to the general publics. Due to these factors the elements of
prescriptive and descriptive grammar have been somewhat lost in the process.

Doubts and wavering trust:

There is an on-going debate about the usage, usefulness, and purposes of

prescriptive and descriptive grammars. It has been continuing since the early
history of writing,
