1.0 Introduction.

Autoclaved Aerated Concrete (AAC) blocks are increasingly employed in construction due to
their superior thermal insulation, and lightweight and fire-resistant properties. This article delves
into the methodological steps entailed in laying AAC blocks, besides discussing the necessary
preparation and pertinent safety measures.

Understanding AAC Blocks

Composed of quartz sand, calcined gypsum, lime, cement, water and aluminum powder, AAC blocks
are high-quality building material which are an ecologically beneficial choice. These blocks come in a
variety of types and sizes, allowing for versatility in building design and application.

Tools and Equipment Required

To ensure the safe and efficient laying of AAC blocks, several specialized tools and pieces of
equipment are required. Each serves a unique function and contributes to the overall quality and
integrity of the construction project.

1. Trowel: A trowel is a handheld tool with a flat, pointed blade. It is used for applying and
spreading the adhesive mortar on the AAC blocks. The size and shape of the trowel can
affect the thickness and evenness of the mortar layer, which in turn impacts the stability of
the blocks.

2. Spirit Level: This tool is essential for checking the alignment of the AAC blocks. A spirit
level uses a liquid-filled vial with an air bubble to determine whether a surface is level or
plumb (vertically straight). Proper alignment is crucial for the structural integrity and
appearance of the finished wall.

3. Rubber Mallet: A rubber mallet is used for adjusting the position of the AAC blocks without
damaging them. Its soft, rubber head allows for gentle taps that can nudge the blocks into
the correct position or alignment.

4. Saw: An AAC block saw is needed for cutting the blocks to the required size. AAC blocks are
often sold in large sizes, so they need to be cut to fit specific dimensions of the wall being
built. The saw should be specifically designed for AAC blocks to ensure clean, smooth cuts
that won’t damage the blocks.

5. Measuring Tape: A measuring tape is used to measure the dimensions of the blocks, the
thickness of the mortar layer, and the alignment of the blocks. Accurate measurements are
crucial for maintaining the design specifications and ensuring the blocks fit together
properly.

6. Personal Protective Equipment (PPE): Safety should always be a priority on a

construction site. PPE such as safety glasses, gloves, safety shoes, and dust masks should
be worn by all workers to protect against potential hazards. By having all the necessary
tools and equipment on hand and knowing how to use them properly, workers can carry out
the AAC block laying process safely and efficiently.

2.0 Safety Measures

Ensuring a safe working environment is paramount when undertaking construction work such as
AAC block laying. Before the work begins, several safety measures should be carefully enforced and
followed.

Firstly, workers must be equipped with necessary Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) for their
protection. This involves:

1. Gloves: To protect the hands from any rough or sharp surfaces of the AAC blocks as well as
from potential skin irritants in the mortar mix.

2. Safety Shoes: Designed to resist heavy impact, these shoes are necessary to safeguard the
feet from any falling blocks or tools.

3. Helmets: To shield the head from any unintentional falling objects at the site, wearing a
helmet is a must.
4. Safety Glasses: To protect the eyes from dust or debris during the cutting of AAC blocks,
safety glasses should be worn.

5. Dust Masks: These are important to prevent workers from inhaling dust particles,
especially during the sawing or cutting of the AAC blocks.

Clear and effective communication forms the backbone of any safe working site. Safety briefings
should be conducted at regular intervals to apprise everyone involved in the construction project
about the potential hazards. These meetings should cover:

 Identifying hazardous situations: Every worker should be trained to identify potential threats
or dangerous conditions.

 Emergency procedures: Workers should be comprehensively informed and regularly trained on

the appropriate steps to take under emergency situations. Emergency drills, medical first aid
provisions, and contact details of emergency services should be readily available.

 Proper use of tools and equipment: Accidents can occur due to the incorrect handling of
equipment, so procedures for the proper use and maintenance of tools should be addressed
and reiterated.

With these safety measures in place, workers can carry out AAC block laying with greater
confidence, thus reducing the chance of accidents and promoting a safe and healthy working
environment.

3.0 Preparation Before Laying AAC Blocks

The success of AAC block laying significantly depends on the preparatory steps taken before the
actual process begins. Here are these steps in detail:

1. Site Cleaning: The first step involves a thorough cleaning of the site where the AAC blocks
will be laid. This ensures the removal of any debris, dust, or loose particles that could
interfere with the adhesion of the AAC blocks. The surface should be even and free from any
materials that might compromise the stability of the blocks.

2. Layout Checking and Marking: Once the site is clean, the layout for the AAC blocks
should be checked and marked. This involves measuring and marking the exact locations
where the blocks will be placed. The use of a chalk line or laser level can be helpful in
ensuring accurate and straight lines. This step is crucial because it determines the alignment
and positioning of the AAC blocks, which ultimately affects the stability and aesthetics of the
final structure.

3. Pre-wetting of AAC Blocks: AAC blocks have a porous structure, which can cause them to
absorb water rapidly. If the blocks absorb water from the adhesive mortar, it can result in
poor adhesion, leading to instability in the structure. To prevent this, AAC blocks should be
pre-wetted before laying them. This involves lightly sprinkling water on the AAC blocks until
they are damp but not saturated. It’s important to ensure that the blocks are not overly wet,
as this could also negatively affect adhesion.

4. Preparation of Mortar: Alongside pre-wetting the AAC blocks, the adhesive mortar should
also be prepared. It should be mixed according to the manufacturer’s instructions to achieve
the right consistency. The mortar acts as a binding agent between the blocks, ensuring they
are securely held together.

5. Arrangement of Blocks and Tools: Before commencing the block laying, arrange the AAC
blocks and tools in a manner that allows easy and quick access. This not only improves
efficiency but also minimizes the risk of accidents caused by tripping over scattered tools or
materials.

By ensuring these preparatory steps are meticulously carried out, the process of laying AAC blocks
will be smoother, safer, and more efficient, leading to a more robust and reliable structure.
4.0 AAC Block Laying Methodology

The process of laying AAC blocks involves a series of methodological steps to ensure a well-
structured, firm and durable construction. Below is an expanded guide to this process:

1. Mixing the Mortar: The first step is the preparation of the adhesive mortar. Using the
manufacturer’s guidelines, create a smooth and homogeneous mix. Maintaining the correct
water-to-adhesive ratio is crucial for achieving optimum consistency that will provide secure
adhesion and easy application. Remember to mix enough mortar that can be used within its
pot-life (the time within which the mortar remains workable).

2. Applying the Mortar: Subsequent to preparing the mortar, apply a thin layer of it onto the
surface where the AAC block will be placed. Using a mason’s trowel, spread the mortar
evenly to guarantee a uniform and strong bond. The thickness of the mortar layer should be
as advised by the AAC block manufacturer.

3. Placing the AAC Block: The AAC blocks should be carefully placed onto the applied mortar
layer. Ensuring this placement is done smoothly is vital to avoid any trapped air pockets
which could compromise the block’s stability. In case of any minor adjustments, use a
rubber mallet to gently tap the block into place.

4. Checking the Level and Alignment: After each block is placed, use a spirit level to
confirm its horizontal alignment. This process is vital to maintain the balance and symmetry
of the overall structure. Make adjustments by adding or reducing the mortar under the block
until it is perfectly level. Repeatedly check the vertical alignment of the wall using a plumb
line or level.

5. Repeat the Process: Continue with the process for every AAC block that has to be laid. It
is important to clean off the excess mortar from the joints as you proceed. Follow each step
meticulously to create a strong and even wall structure.

6. Curing Process: Lastly, once the AAC blocks are laid, the curing process follows. Curing
involves maintaining adequate moisture and temperature allowing the mortar to harden,
thereby achieving its maximum strength. The specific duration and method for curing can
vary, so adhere to the manufacturer’s instructions for best results.

The correct and thorough application of these steps in the laying of AAC blocks guarantees a
strong, durable and visually appealing wall structure. It is crucial to proceed patiently, inspecting
each step of the process to ensure top-quality construction.

5.0 Quality Control and Quality Assurance

Quality control and assurance play a pivotal role in any construction project, and AAC
block laying is no exception. It involves a systematic process of checking and verifying the
quality of each block and the final structure to ensure compliance with the specified standards.

1. Checking Dimensions: Each AAC block should be checked for its dimensions before being
used. This involves measuring the length, width, and height of the blocks to ensure they
match the manufacturer’s specifications. Blocks of incorrect dimensions could compromise
the stability and aesthetics of the structure.

2. Clearances: Clearances refer to the space left between the blocks for the application of the
mortar. It’s important to maintain consistent and appropriate clearances to ensure the
blocks are securely bonded together. Too little or too much clearance could lead to structural
instability.

3. Alignment: The alignment of the AAC blocks is crucial for the overall structure. Both
vertical and horizontal alignment should be checked at all stages of the project. Misaligned
blocks could lead to a skewed structure, which could have serious implications for the
structural integrity of the building.

4. Mortar Mixing: One common mistake during AAC block laying is the excessive mixing of
mortar. Overmixing can lead to a reduction in the mortar’s strength, resulting in poor
adhesion between the blocks. It’s important to follow the manufacturer’s instructions for
mixing the mortar to achieve the right consistency.

5. Curing Process: Another common mistake is rushing the curing process. Quick curing does
not allow the mortar to achieve its maximum strength, which could lead to structural
weaknesses. The curing process should be carried out as per the manufacturer’s
instructions, which often involves maintaining a certain temperature and moisture level for a
specified period.

6. Regular Inspections: Conducting regular inspections at every stage of the AAC block
laying process is a vital part of quality control. This helps in identifying and rectifying any
issues at an early stage, thereby preventing any major problems down the line.

7. Documentation: All quality control measures and results should be properly documented.
This provides a record for future reference and can be used to demonstrate compliance with
quality standards.

By adhering to these quality control and assurance measures, you can ensure the longevity and
durability of the structure, while also maintaining high standards of workmanship.
