B. Motivation
𝑥−1
Consider the rational function 𝑓(𝑥) = .
𝑥+1
a. Can we have a value of f(x) when x = 1?
b. What happens to the value of f(x) when x=0?
c. For what value of x does f(x) become zero?
C. Presentation
The range of a function 𝑓(𝑥) is the set of all values that 𝑓(𝑥) will take.
For a rational function, its range can easily be determined by comparing its
graph to the y-axis while its domain can be determined by comparing the
graph with respect to the x-axis.
𝑥−2
EXAMPLE 1: Find the domain of 𝑓(𝑥) = 𝑥+2 .
SOLUTION: Observe that the denominator becomes zero at 𝑥 = −2. This
value of x will make the function undefined. Thus, the domain is the set of
all real numbers except
−2 or {𝑥 ≠ −2}.
𝑥+3
EXAMPLE 2: Find the domain of 𝑓(𝑥) = 𝑥 2 −2𝑥−3 .
𝑥+3
SOLUTION: 𝑓(𝑥) = 𝑥 2 −2𝑥−3
𝑥+3
𝑓(𝑥) = (𝑥−3)(𝑥+1) (Factor the denominator)
The denominator becomes zero at 𝑥 = 3 and 𝑥 = −1. These values of x
make the function undefined. Thus, the domain is the set of all real
numbers except -1 and 3 or {𝑥 ≠ −1, 3}.
EXAMPLE 3: Give the domain and range of the rational function whose
graph is given at the right.
SOLUTION: The graph breaks
at 𝑥 = 2.
This means the domain is the
set of
all real numbers except 2 or
{𝑥 ≠ 2}.
