Chapter 1
INTRODUCTION
In recent years, the proliferation of social media platforms has transformed the way individuals
communicate, interact, and engage with online content. Among these platforms, Facebook has emerged
as one of the most prominent and widely used social networking sites. With its extensive features and
addictive nature, Facebook has garnered significant attention, particularly among younger generations.
Senior high school students, in particular, have become increasingly immersed in virtual social networks,
spending a substantial amount of time on Facebook. This widespread engagement with Facebook raises
concerns about its potential impact on students' academic performance.
Prior research has suggested several ways in which Facebook addiction may adversely affect academic
performance. Excessive time spent on Facebook can lead to procrastination, reducing the time available
for studying and completing assignments. Additionally, frequent interruptions and distractions from
Facebook notifications can disrupt concentration and cognitive processes necessary for effective
learning. Moreover, the comparison and validation-seeking behaviors prevalent on Facebook may
contribute to increased stress and decreased self-esteem, further compromising academic performance.
Therefore, this study aims to investigate the influence of Facebook addiction on the academic
performance of senior high school students. By employing a quantitative research design, a sample of
senior high school students will be surveyed to measure their levels of Facebook addiction and academic
performance. The study will also explore potential mediating factors such as time management, self-
regulation, and psychological well-being. The findings of this research will contribute to the existing
body of knowledge on the effects of social media addiction on educational outcomes and inform
educators, parents, and policymakers about the importance of promoting healthy online behaviors
among senior high school students.
Introduction:
The rapid growth and widespread use of social media platforms have significantly impacted various
aspects of individuals' lives, including education. Among the numerous social media platforms available,
Facebook remains one of the most popular and widely used platforms globally. Its extensive reach and
diverse features make it a dominant force in the lives of many individuals, including senior high school
students. This research aims to investigate the influence of Facebook addiction on the academic
performance of senior high school students at the national, international, and local levels. Facebook
addiction refers to excessive and compulsive use of the platform, leading to negative consequences and
interference with daily activities.
At the national level, understanding the impact of Facebook addiction on academic performance is
crucial due to the increasing dependence of students on social media platforms. Research has shown
that excessive use of Facebook can lead to distractions, time mismanagement, decreased focus on
studies, and reduced academic achievement. By exploring the relationship between Facebook addiction
and academic performance, this research seeks to contribute to the existing body of knowledge on the
subject, enabling policymakers and educators to develop strategies to address the issue at a national
level.
In Gov. Nonito D. Llanos Sr. National Hign School , the researchers found out that the Senior High School
Students did not know the effects of Facebook addiction on academic performance. Factors such as
cultural norms, local educational practices, and individual characteristics of students can play a
significant role in shaping the relationship between Facebook addiction and academic achievement. By
conducting research at the local level, this study aims to provide context-specific insights that can inform
educational institutions, teachers, and parents about the implications of Facebook addiction on the
academic performance of senior high school students in their specific environment.
We also interested in the academic relevance of the topic. Social media addiction is a relatively new
phenomenon that is not yet fully understood. By studying the impact of Facebook addiction on
academic performance, We can contribute to the existing body of knowledge on the subject and offer
insights into how educators and policymakers can address this issue. This research can help educators
understand the challenges their students face and develop strategies to mitigate the effects of social
media addiction on academic performance.
Furthermore, the societal impact of social media addiction cannot be overstated. The negative effects of
addiction can extend beyond the individual and affect their relationships, mental health, and overall
well-being. By investigating the relationship between Facebook addiction and academic performance, I
hope to shed light on the broader societal implications of this phenomenon and encourage discussions
on how to mitigate its effects.
From a practical perspective, the findings of this research can have significant implications for educators,
parents, and students. For instance, if the research reveals a significant correlation between Facebook
addiction and poor academic performance, educators may consider implementing interventions that
aim to reduce social media use during school hours or promote healthy social media habits among
students. Similarly, parents may use the findings to monitor and regulate their children's social media
use, while students may become more aware of the potential consequences of excessive social media
use and take steps to manage their habits.
Finally, We are personally interested in this research topic because it allows us to explore a subject that I
am passionate about. We believe that studying the influence of Facebook addiction on academic
performance can help me develop critical thinking and analytical skills that can be applied to other areas
of my academic and professional life. It also provides an opportunity to learn new research methods and
gain valuable research experience that will be useful in my future endeavors.
In conclusion, the topic of the influence of Facebook addiction on the academic performance of senior
high school students is relevant, timely, and important. It addresses a growing concern among young
people and has the potential to contribute to the existing body of knowledge on social media addiction.
It also has practical implications for educators, parents, and students and allows me to explore a subject
that I am passionate about.
