Assignment II Date: 27/2/2019

Q.1 A Gravity dam has the total height of 80 m with 2 m of freeboard. The slope of the upstream face is 0.2: 1.
Taking α= 0.1, determine, i) hydrodynamic earthquake pressure ii) its moment at a joint 30 m below the maximum
water surface iii) its moment at the base. CO4 BL4

Q.2 Explain stability of gravity dam including various factors of safety and Internal stresses developed in it. CO4 BL3

Q.3 A concrete dam section is shown in fig. Check the stability of the dam section and determine the value of sliding
factor and shear factor for reservoir full condition. Take unit weight of concrete = 2.4 t/m3 and unit shear of concrete =
21 kg/ cm2. CO4 BL5

15.0 m 7.0 m

F. B. = 1.0 m F.R.L. = 79.0 m

u/s slope = 1: 0.9 d/s slope= 1: 0.7
