thepeopleofKenya.itisoneofthethreeorgansofthestate,theothertwobeingthebeingtheexecutiveandth
elegislature.Accordingtotheconstitution,themandateofthejudiciaryistoadministerjusticeandpromot
etheruleoflaw,thismandateisdischargedbyprovidingtheindependent,accessible,fairandresponsiblef

4.1Replacementofharddrives
Therearerisksofinstallinganewharddriveandtherearesomepitfallsyouneedtoknowbeforebeginning:
First,ifyouaren’tsurehowtoresearchyourspecificharddriveorcomputertypeandhaveneverdoneanyD
IYcomputerworkbefore,itcantaketimetogettoknowhowyourcomputermodelisconfigured.Bepatient
withyourself.
Notknowingwhatconnectiongoeswhereandfailingtosecureyournewdriveproperlycanresultindamag
etothedatayouhavestoredaswellasindividualcomputercomponents.Researchandfollowtheinstructio
ns.Don’twingit.
Rememberthatyoushouldalwaysworkonananti-
staticsurfacewiththepowerdisconnectedbecausefailingtogroundyourcomputercancausedatalossand
electricalinjuries.
Ifyoucanfollowdirectionsandarecompetentindoingbasicmechanicaltasks,suchasusingascrewdriver
andreadingdiagrams,upgradingyourharddriveshouldn’tbedifficultatall.
Themoneyyoucansavebydoingityourselfcanbelesscost.
Toreplaceaharddiskshutdownthemachineandremovethecomputercasingtoaccesstheharddrive.Loc
atetheharddriveanddataconnectorsfromthedrive.Iftherearescrewsholdingthedriveunscrewthemand
removetheharddrivefromthecomputerbay.Placetherenewharddriveandsimplyreversethestepsalrea
dyperformed.However,therewillbeneedforanoperatingsysteminstallationinthenewharddrivetoofor
ittobefunctional.
4.2Minorhardwareissuestroubleshootandsecuredatarecovery
Itmaybehardtobelieve,butacompletelydeadharddrivemaybethebestoptionforaharddrivefailure.Wh
enyourdriveisdead,itcouldbeaproblemwiththecomputerpowersupplyorthecables,orthedriveitselfco
uldhavejuststopped.Eitherway,thedriveisnolongeraccessingitsplattersandwritingoverorcorrupting
yourdata.
PayAttentiontotheSoundstheDriveisMaking
Ifthedrivemakesclickingandgrindingnoiseswhenitstartsup,thenshutyourcomputerdownimmediatel
yandcontactoneofourcertifiedtechnicianstohaveyourdatapreserved.Thoseclickingandgrindingnois
esindicatedamagetotheread/
writeheadsofyourdrive,andthatisamechanicalissuethatanexpertshouldfix.
Ifyouturnyourcomputeronanditmakesaseriesofbeeps,thenturnitoffandgiveusacall.Thekeytounderst
andinghowtorecoverdatafromaharddriveisunderstandinghowtopreservewhatdatayouhave.
TurnOffYourComputer

Theoperatingsystemonyourcomputerisconstantlyscanning,accessing,andwritingdatatoyourharddri
ve.Whenyourharddrivestartstofail,youroperatingsystemcouldwindupinterpretingbadsectorsasblan
ksectorsandstartwritingtothem.Thatmeansthatyourdrivewillsustainmoredamageandyouwilllosem
oredatabythesecond.
CheckYourConnections
Openupyourcomputerandmakesurethatthepoweranddataconnectioncablesforyourharddriveareplu
ggedinandworking.Lookatyourcablesandmakesurethattheyarenotfrayedordamagedinsomeway.Itis
alwaysbesttostartwiththeobviousthingsfirstwhenyouaretryingtofigureouthowtorecoverdatafromad
amagedharddrive.Ifyouarehavingproblemsopeningyourcase,thencheckonlinefortheinstructions.Y
oushouldhavenoproblemfindingagoodvideothatwillletyouknowhowtoopenyourcomputer.
LookforYourDriveinYourBIOS
Whenyoufirstturnonyourcomputer,amessagewillflashforafewsecondsthatwilltellyouwhatbuttonto
pushtoaccessyourcomputer’sBIOS.Pressthatbuttonandthenfollowtheon-
screeninstructionstofindyourharddrivelisting.Ifyouwanttolearnhowtorecoveraharddrive,itisimport
anttofirstmakesurethatthecomputercanseethedrive.
IfyouseeyourharddrivelistedinyourBIOS,thenyouhaveachanceatbeingabletorecoveryourdrivethro
ughyouroperatingsystem.Ifyourdriveisnotthere,thenturnthecomputeroffandopenthecase.Onthebac
kofyourharddrivewillbeapowercableandadatacable.Makesuretheyarebothpluggedinproperly.Ifthe
yarepluggedin,thenreplacethedatacableasaprecaution.IfyourBIOScanseeyourharddriveafterreplaci
ngyourdatacable,thenyouprobablyjustsolvedyourproblem.Ifitdoesnotseethedrive,thenyouwillneed
tomoveontothenextstep.
PuttheDriveinanExternalEnclosure
Torecoverharddrivedatasafely,youneedtoconnectyourharddrivetoasecondcomputerthathasaworki
ngoperatingsystem.Removeyourdamagedharddriveandputitinanexternalenclosurethatcanbeconne
ctedtoasecondcomputerthroughaUSBport.
Whenyouconnecttheharddrivetoasecondcomputer,youwillbeableto:

4.3Installationofanoperatingsystem

rwheretostartfrom-eithertheUSBorinstallationdiskyoucreatedandinsertedearlyon.
Followthepromptstopartition,format,andinstallWindowsontoyournewharddrive.Mostuserscanuset
hedefaultsettingsandnotcustomizeanythingatthistime.

Youmaybeaskedtorestartthecomputer.Thecomputermayalsorestartonitsownseveraltimesbeforeit’s
finished.Allowafewhoursfortheprocesstocomplete,dependingonyourharddriveandOS.
OncethecomputerhasrestartedforthefinaltimeandyouseeaWindowslog-
inscreen,you’rereadytobeginusingyournewdrive.

4.4Replacementofasystemunit’spowersupply
Here'showtoextractandreplaceapowersupplyand,intheprocess,resurrectyourfallenPCbasedonwhatt
aughtbythesupervisor.
Step1:OpenupyourPC
Startbyunpluggingthecordfromthebackofthepowersupply,thenremovethecaselid.Thereshouldbeal
abelonthepowersupplythatidentifiesthebrandandmodelnumber.Itisneededforanidenticalreplaceme
ntofthepowersupply
Step2:Orderareplacementpowersupply
Hestronglyrecommendedchoosinganidenticalreplacement.Thatwayyoucanbeabsolutelysureit'llfitt
heavailablespaceandcomewithallthenecessarypowerleads.
Step3:Take"before"photos
RemovingapowersupplyfromaPCrequiresyoutodisconnectitsleadsfromseveralplaces:theharddrive
,theopticaldrive,andvariousspotsonthemotherboard.Theremayalsobealeadconnectedtoafrontpanel.
Beforeyoupullasingleplug,grabyourdigitalcameraandsnapsomephotosofthecaseinterior,includingo
neofeachlead'slocation.Believeme:OnceyourPCistornapart,you'llhaveahardtimerememberingwhe
reeverythinggoes.
Dependingonthesizeofyourcase,someplugsmaybehiddenbycables,drivecagesorotherinfrastructure
.Justdothebestyoucantophoto-documentthepowersupply'sconnections.
Step4:Disconnectthepowerleads
youmaynotbeabletoreachallthepowerconnectionswithoutfirstdisassemblingpartsofthecase.ifyoudo
havetoremoveanyinternalcomponents,keepsnappingphotossoyou'llbeabletoreviewhowitlooked.At
thesametime,documentyourstepssoyoucanperformtheminreversewheninstallingthenewPS.ifyouwi
ndupremovingmorethanafew,keepthemorganized
Step5:Removethedeadpowersupply
Onceyou'vedisconnectedalltheleads,lookattherearofthecaseandfindthethreeorfourscrewsholdingth
epowersupplyinplace.Removethem,thengentlyliftoutthePS,makingsurethatthecablingdoesn'tgetta
ngledon,say,aRAMmoduleorexpansioncardandaccidentallypullitloose.
Step6:Installthenewpowersupply

Makesurethereplacementpowersupplyissettothecorrectvoltage.OncetheoldPSisout,putthenewonei
nitsplaceandscrewitin.Nowjustreversethestepsyouperformed:connecttheleadstotheirrespectiveoutl
ets,replaceanyextractedcomponents,andconsultyourphotostomakesureyou'veleftnoleadunplugged.
Step7:bootthemachine
Beforeyoucloseupthecase,makesureeverythingworks.Connectthepowercordtothepowersupply,plu
ginyourmonitorandkeyboard,andfireupthemachine.Unlessyou'vefailedtoconnectthemainleadstoth
emotherboard,itshouldcomerighttolife,justlikebefore.Letitbootcompletely,thenchecktomakesureth
ere'spowertotheopticaldrive(s)and,ifapplicable,thefrontpanel.
