How rapidly the world has changed becomes clear by how even quite recent computer technology feels

ancient
to us today. Mobile phones in the ‘90s were big bricks with tiny green displays. Two decades before that the main
storage for computers was punch cards.

In a short period computers evolved so quickly and became such an integral part of our daily lives that it is easy
to forget how recent this technology is. The first digital computers were only invented about eight decades ago,
as the timeline shows.

Since the early days of this history, some computer scientists have strived to make machines as intelligent as
humans. The next timeline shows some of the notable artificial intelligence (AI) systems and describes what they
were capable of.

The first system I mention is the Theseus. It was built by Claude Shannon in 1950 and was a remote-controlled
mouse that was able to find its way out of a labyrinth and could remember its course. In seven decades the
abilities of artificial intelligence have come a long way.

What is A.I?

Artificial intelligence (AI), the ability of a digital computer or computer-controlled robot to perform tasks
commonly associated with intelligent beings. The term is frequently applied to the project of developing systems
endowed with the intellectual processes characteristic of humans, such as the ability to reason, discover
meaning, generalize, or learn from past experience. Since the development of the digital computer in the 1940s,
it has been demonstrated that computers can be programmed to carry out very complex tasks—such as
discovering proofs for mathematical theorems or playing chess—with great proficiency.

Examples of Artificial Intelligence

Face Detection and Recognition Technology - Virtual filters on Snapchat and the FaceID unlock on iPhones are
two examples of AI applications today. While the former uses face detection technology to identify any face, the
latter relies on face recognition.

Text Editor - Several text editors today rely on artificial intelligence to provide the best writing experience. For
example, document editors use an NLP algorithm to identify incorrect grammar usage and suggest corrections.
Besides auto-correction, some writing tools also provide readability and plagiarism grades.

Social Media - Social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram rely heavily on artificial
intelligence for various tasks.

Currently, these social media platforms use AI to personalize what you see on your feeds. The model identifies
users’ interests and recommends similar content to keep them engaged. Social media networks use artificial
intelligence algorithms to personalize user feeds and filter unnecessary information like hate speech and posts
inciting violence and discrimination.
Plans for social media platform involve using artificial intelligence to identify mental health problems. For
example, an algorithm could analyze content posted and consumed to detect suicidal tendencies.

Chatbots - Computer scientists train chat robots or chatbots to impersonate the conversational styles of
customer representatives using natural language processing. Chatbots can now answer questions that require a
detailed response in place of a specific yes or no answer. What’s more, the bots can learn from previous bad
ratings to ensure maximum customer satisfaction.

Recommendation Algorithm - Media streaming platforms such as Netflix, YouTube, and Spotify rely on a smart
recommendation system that’s powered by AI.

First, the system collects data on users’ interests and behavior using various online activities. After that, machine
learning and deep learning algorithms analyze the data to predict preferences.

Search Algorithm - Search algorithms ensure that the top results on the search engine result page (SERP) have
the answers to our queries. But how does this happen?

Search companies usually include some type of quality control algorithm to recognize high-quality content. It
then provides a list of search results that best answer the query and offers the best user experience.

Digital Assistant - In October 2011, Apple’s Siri became the first digital assistant to be standard on a smartphone.
However, voice assistants have come a long way since then. Today, Google Assistant incorporates advanced NLP
and ML to become well-versed in human language. Not only does it understand complex commands, but it also
provides satisfactory outputs. Also, digital assistants now have adaptive capabilities for analyzing user
preferences, habits, and schedules. That way, they can organize and plan actions such as reminders, prompts,
and schedules.

Smart Home Devices - Various smart home devices now use AI applications to conserve energy.

For example, smart thermostats such as Nest use our daily habits and heating/cooling preferences to adjust
home temperatures. Likewise, smart refrigerators can create shopping lists based on what’s absent on the
fridge’s shelves.

The way we use artificial intelligence at home is still evolving. More AI solutions now analyze human behavior
and function accordingly.

What are the advantages of Artificial Intelligence (AI)?

Increased Efficiency: AI can automate repetitive tasks, improving efficiency and productivity in various industries.

Data Analysis and Insights: AI algorithms can analyze large data quickly, providing valuable insights for decision-
making.

24/7 Availability: AI-powered systems can operate continuously, offering round-the-clock services and support.

Improved Accuracy: AI can perform tasks with high precision, reducing errors and improving overall accuracy.

Personalization: AI enables personalized experiences and recommendations based on individual preferences and
behavior.

Safety and Risk Reduction: AI can be used for tasks that are hazardous to humans, reducing risks and ensuring
safety.

What are the disadvantages of Artificial Intelligence (AI)?

Job Displacement: AI automation may lead to job losses in certain industries, affecting the job market and
workforce.

Ethical Concerns: AI raises ethical issues, including data privacy, algorithm bias, and potential misuse of AI
technologies.

Lack of Creativity and Empathy: AI lacks human qualities like creativity and empathy, limiting its ability to
understand emotions or produce original ideas.

Cost and Complexity: Developing and implementing AI systems can be expensive, require specialized knowledge
and resources.

Reliability and Trust: AI systems may not always be fully reliable, leading to distrust in their decision-making
capabilities.

Dependency on Technology: Over-reliance on AI can make humans dependent on technology and reduce critical
thinking skills.

What are some AI applications in everyday life?

AI applications in everyday life include:

Virtual assistants like Siri and Alexa, which help with voice commands and information retrieval.

Social media algorithms that curate personalized content for users.

Recommendation systems on streaming platforms, suggesting movies and shows based on viewing history.

Financial institutions use fraud detection systems to identify suspicious transactions.

AI-powered healthcare diagnostics for disease detection and treatment planning.

What are the advantages of AI in education?

Personalized learning: AI has the capability to analyze individual student data, enabling the provision of
personalized learning experiences that cater to each student's needs and preferred learning styles. As a result,
students can progress at their own pace and receive the necessary assistance for their academic success.

Improved engagement and motivation: AI can create more interactive and engaging learning experiences that can
help students stay focused in their learning.

Enhanced assessment and feedback: AI can provide more accurate and timely assessment and feedback to help
students track their progress and identify areas where they need additional support.

Increased access to education: AI can help to increase access to education by providing more personalized and
affordable learning opportunities.

Improved teacher training: AI can help to improve teacher training by providing teachers with data and insights
that can help them better understand their students and their needs.

Can AI replace human intelligence and creativity?

While AI can perform specific tasks with remarkable precision, it cannot fully replicate human intelligence and
creativity. AI lacks consciousness and emotions, limiting its ability to understand complex human experiences and
produce truly creative works.
