2019 END-NOVEMBER-CE 201 (MPCH)

This document contains four questions regarding mechanics of materials for an end of semester exam. Question 1 involves calculating reactions and drawing shear force and bending moment diagrams for cantilever beams. Question 2 involves the same for a beam with different supports under multiple loads. Question 3 considers stresses in a solid shaft under torque. Question 4 analyzes deflections and bending in beams under various end conditions and loads.

END OF SEMESTER EXAMINATION – NOVEMBER 2019

CE201 MECHANICS OF MATERIALS I (Section C)

(Two hours)

(Answer ALL questions. All questions carry equal marks.)

(Q1) Fig Q1(a) shows two cantilever beams 𝐀𝐁 and 𝐂𝐃. Before the uniformly distributed load
𝒘 is applied on beam 𝐀𝐁, a gap, 𝜹 = 1.2 mm, exists between the ends of the cantilever
beams 𝐀𝐁 and 𝐂𝐃 as shown in Fig Q1(a). The uniform, symmetric cross-section of these
beams is shown in Fig. Q1(b). Knowing that 𝑬 = 105 GPa and 𝒘 = 30 kN/m;

(a) Determine the reactions at 𝐀 and 𝐃.

(b) Draw the Shear Force and Bending Moment Diagrams (SFD and BMD) for beams
𝐀𝐁 and 𝐂𝐃 showing critical values.

• Useful information to find the tip deflection of uniformly loaded cantilever beam by using
second moment area theorem is given in Fig Q1(c).

(Q2) Beam 𝐀𝐁 has a pinned-support at 𝐀 and a roller-support at 𝐁 as shown in Fig. Q2(a). The
beam is loaded by a uniformly distributed load of 10 kN/m and a concentrated load of 20
kN at midspan of the beam. The uniform, symmetric cross-section of this beam is shown
in Fig. Q2(b).

(a) Draw the Shear Force and Bending Moment Diagrams (SFD and BMD) for the beam
𝐀𝐁 for the loading shown.

(b) Find the Neutral Axis (NA) and the moment of inertia (INA) about NA of the given
beam cross-section (Fig. Q2(b)).

(c) Determine the maximum normal and vertical shear stresses in beam 𝐀𝐁 on 𝐱 − 𝐱
cross-section (Fig. Q2(b)) and sketch the normal and vertical shear stress
distributions along the depth of the web.

(d) Use the Mohr’s circle to determine the magnitudes and the directions of the principal
stresses at point 𝐏 on 𝐱 − 𝐱 cross-section (Fig. Q2(b)), and show them on a sketch of
a properly oriented element.

(Q3) The solid shaft shown in Fig. Q3 is made of steel which is assumed to be elastoplastic
with Yield Stress (𝝉𝒚 ) = 𝟏𝟒𝟓 MPa and 𝑮 = 𝟕𝟕. 𝟐 GPa. This shaft is subjected to a
torque load of 𝑻 as shown in Fig Q3(a).

(a) Determine the magnitude of the torque (𝑻) and the corresponding angle of twist (∅):
i. at the start of yield and
ii. when the plastic zone is 𝟏𝟎 mm deep.

(b) When the plastic zone is 𝟏𝟎 mm deep, draw the shear stress and shear strain variation
in a cross section of the shaft from the centre to the outer surface along a radius.

(Q4) (a) A cantilever of length 𝒍 /𝟐 and uniform flexural rigidity 𝑬𝑰 is shown in Fig.Q4(a). It
is subjected to a vertical force 𝐒 and a bending moment 𝐌 at the tip. Determine the tip
deflection and the tip rotation of the cantilever beam.

(b) Fig.Q4(b) shows a beam length l and uniform flexural rigidity 𝑬𝑰, fixed at both ends,
subjected to a concentrated load 𝐏 at the center.

i. Using the result of (a) above determine the bending moment and the deflection
at the center of the beam.
ii. Sketch the Shear Force and Bending Moment Diagrams (SFD and BMD) for
this beam (Fig.Q4(b)).
