Starter Activity - Formulas Recap

This lesson plan teaches students how to enter formulas into a spreadsheet to perform calculations instead of doing them by hand. It provides 5 examples of calculations involving addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division and asks students to write the corresponding formula for each in column D, such as "=A1*B1" for the first row which is multiplying 57 by 143. The lesson aims to show students how spreadsheets can be used to easily do math calculations.

Year 7 – Spreadsheets Lesson plan

Lesson 3 – Collecting data

Do maths without doing maths!

You have been given some calculations to do, but you’ve hatched a plan to get a spreadsheet
to take care of the maths for you!

What would you type into a cell in a spreadsheet to do the calculations below? Write your
answer in column D.

★ You don’t need to work out the result, only the formula you would use in your
spreadsheet
★ Remember to use the correct symbols for multiplication and division

A B C D

1 57 x 143

2 544 ÷ 34

3 229 + 798

4 941 – 475

5 99 x 3
