Weather and Climate - Worksheet

The document discusses weather and climate concepts for grade 5 students. It defines key terms like altitude, wind, humidity, and sea and land breezes. It explains the three main climatic zones - torrid, temperate, and frigid - and differentiates between weather, which changes frequently, and climate, which represents long-term conditions. Factors that influence a place's climate include its distance from the equator, altitude, distance from the sea, wind direction, and rainfall.

THE ACHIEVERS, EXPLORERS, SCHOLARS (AES) PROGRAMME

SUBJECT: SOCIAL STUDIES

WEATHER AND CLIMATE
Grade- 5______________________________________________________________________
Learning Objectives:
Students will be able to…
➢ Define the following terms- Altitude, Wind, Humidity, Meteorologists, Sea breeze and Land
breeze.
➢ Explain the three climatic zones.
➢ Differentiate between Weather and Climate.
➢ Examine the factors that influence the climate of a place.
Answer the following questions:
1.Name the following:
a) The height of a place above the sea level.
Ans. Altitude
b) The amount of water vapour present in the air.
Ans. Humidity
c)The movement of air in horizontal motion.
Ans. Wind
d) Scientists who study and forecast weather.
Ans. Meteorologists
e) Climate which is very hot in summers and very cold in winters.
Ans. Extreme Climate

2. Match the following:

Column A Column B
1) Place near the sea a. Delhi

2) Climatology b. Neither very hot nor very cold.

3) Place in India with extreme climate. c. The Study of climatic condition.

Ans-1-b, 2-c, 3-a

3.Define the following terms:

a. Land Breeze: Breeze that blows towards the sea, especially at night, owing to the relative
warmth of the sea is called land breeze.
b. Sea Breeze: Breeze that blows from sea towards the land during the day is called sea breeze.

4. List and explain the three climatic zones.
The three climatic zones are:
a) Torrid Zone, b) Temperate Zone, c) Frigid Zone
Torrid Zone:
• This zone lies between Tropic of Cancer(23½°N) and Tropic of Capricorn(23½°S).
• This zone experiences a very hot and humid climate because it receives direct rays of sun
throughout the year.
Temperate Zone:
• This zone lies between Tropic of Cancer(23½°N) and Arctic Circle(66½°N) in the Northern
Hemisphere and Tropic of Capricorn(23½°S) and Antarctic Circle(66½°S) in the Southern
Hemisphere.
• This zone receives slanting rays of the sun so the climate here is neither hot nor very cold.
Frigid Zone:
• This zone lies between the Arctic Circle(66½°N) and North Pole(90°N) in the Northern
Hemisphere and Antarctic Circle(66½°S) and South Pole(90°S) in the Southern Hemisphere.
• The zone receives very slanting rays of the sun and hence it is extremely cold here.
• This region is permanently covered with thick layer of ice.

5.Differentiate between Weather and Climate.

Weather Climate

1. It is the daily condition of the atmosphere at a 1. It is the average weather conditions of a

particular place and time. place over a long period of time.
2. It may change many times during a day. 2. It changes after a long period of time.

3. It affects the daily life of people. 3. It affects food habits, transportation, housing
and occupation.
4. The Scientists who study weather are called 4. The Scientists who study climate are called
meteorologists. Climatologists.

6. It is colder in mountains and hills than in the plains. Give reasons.

The climate of a place is also affected by its altitude, that is, height of a place above the sea level.
The higher the altitude, the colder is the climate. Thus, mountains and hills are colder than plains.

My Challenge Question: - (Any one Achievers, Explorers & Scholars question to be done in the
notebook)
Achievers
Q. Create a mind map and list the factors that influence the climate of a place.

Factors that influence the climate of a place

The factors that influence the climate of a place are-

a) Distance from the Equator
b) Altitude
c) Distance from the sea
d) Direction of winds
e) Rainfall and humidity

Explorers
Q. How does the direction of winds affect the temperature and rainfall of a place?
The winds blowing over from regions which are hot tend to increase the temperature of a place.
Similarly, winds coming from regions which are cold tend to decrease the temperature of a place. The
winds blowing from the sea towards the land carry a lot of moisture with them. This makes the weather
humid and causes rainfall. Places near the sea receive more rains than the places that are farther away.

Scholars
Q. Closer a place to the equator the hotter is its climate. Justify the statement.
The rays of the sun heat the surface of the Earth. The places that are located near the equator receive
direct and perpendicular rays of the Sun. These rays fall over a smaller area and make the place hot.
Thus, closer a place to the equator the hotter is its climate.
