Strike A Power Pose - 20231102 - 152805 - 0000

Amy Cuddy discusses how adopting expansive, powerful poses for two minutes can influence our hormones and perceptions. Power poses that take up space like standing with your arms out wide can boost confidence and feelings of power, while closed-off poses make us feel smaller and less powerful. Our body language gives cues to others and shapes how we see ourselves.

Strike a power pose

Video: Strike a power pose

Prepared by: Katherine Bernal Aristizabal

Amy Cuddy: Body language shapes our

identity.
She mentions in the video how a simple pose can change your perspective of how you look, how you
feel, and how others may perceive you in that time interval, that many times, it only takes 2 minutes
for our brain to change many things at a chemical level.

We see nonverbal expressions always. For example, in the animal kingdom, they are about
expanding. So you make yourself big, you strech out, you take up the space, you're basically
opening up.

The "power postures" are those in which you show an attitude of security and self-confidence, even
if you really feel insecure while performing them.

We make snap judgments based on body language, and therefore judge others based on it, so we
are influenced by our own nonverbal expressions.

The exact opposite also happens to us, and in the same way in animals: we close ourselves and we
become smaller, as if we wanted to go unnoticed and without bothering.

To emphasize that normally if someone is very powerful with us, we have the tendency to become
small: We do not imitate him and we do just the opposite.

Intentionally adopting a certain body posture for two minutes makes us finally feel and behave in
the same way as when we adopt that posture naturally and unconsciously.

In just 2 minutes…
