Fekadu Assignment 4

The document discusses why designs are often poor in Ethiopia. It notes that poor design can stem from issues with clients, consultants, skills, management, time given for design, and scheduling. Design quality is affected by lack of experience from less skilled professionals and poor coordination between architectural, structural, and other consultants. Other factors contributing to poor design quality include shortages of construction equipment for consultants, lack of supervision and timely responses from consultants, and weak communication between parties. The document examines several studies on challenges facing the Ethiopian construction industry such as design problems, management issues, and skills shortages.

ASSIGNMENT-4 OF CPM COURSE
Assignment 4

Critically present why designs are often found to be poor in Ethiopia? Read about the above

contemporary design and design management practices and present your findings?

Introduction

Design is a process of creating the description of a new facility that represented by detailed plans
and specifications. Architect prepares a preliminary sketch to satisfy the de-signs brief and possibly
provides alternative proposal of Ayalew et.al (2016). A construction project is commonly
acknowledged as successful, when it is completed on schedule and within the agreed budget, with
the highest quality and in the safest manner, in accordance with the specifications(Koshe & Jha,
2016; Roshana & kintola, 2002).

Developing countries of Latin America and Africa are stated as the construction performance and
design quality is so poor and as Ethiopia is the least among some less construction performing
countries(Ayalew et al., 2016). Among different construction delay reasons in Ethiopia (Ayalew
et al., 2016) defined as poor design development, time of design review and conflict of consultants
and designer are the major problems. When defect of the structural and a structural element of a
building occurred, it attributes to defective design. There are several building defects which usually
occur to building parts such as roofs, walls, floors, ceiling, toilets, doors and windows; these
common building defects are crack on walls, peeling paint, rising dampness, defective plaster
rendering and roof defects(Ayalew et al., 2016; Damtew & Enday, 2019; Wen & Mydin, 2013).

The Ethiopian construction is suffering from time and cost shortages. Thus, different scholars are
expressing the contributing factors of these two problems. The project design, management, skills
and other key performers are described as the major Ethiopian construction problems (Assefa et
al., 2015; Awasho & Alemu, 2023; Ayalew et al., 2016; Koshe & Jha, 2016; Roshana & kintola,
2002). Specifically, Ayalew et.al. (2016) clearly elaborate as the maturity problem of the project
management and that the processes in terms of practices are basic construction problems.
Literatures doesn’t express problems for contemporary design and design management as specific
and sole existence. But some explained its outcome for delayed delivery, time overrunning
(Damtew & Enday, 2019) while others discussed from project management perspectives (Ayalew
et al., 2016) and Hassen (2019) presented it from poor workmanship.

1
Summary
Generally, the poor design that manifesting from Ethiopian construction Industries can be from
client and consultant. These problems are because of skill, management, time given for the design,
scheduling the project and can be other sources. But it is possible to say as it is complex and multi-
source problems.
Damtew and Enday (2019) explained the design quality category, which are improper and
incomplete design conducted by less skilled professionals which is results of the defect by the
perception of consultants. Such a problems defined by the Client professionals as poor-quality
design output was the remarkable cause of defect in this category. Whereas, contractors claim the
lack of coordination between architectural, structural, electrical and sanitary professionals during
design were the significant causes of the defect; and all stakeholder respondents prioritized the
factor as a primary factor sharing the lack of consultant professionals’ experience. The other detail
factors could be consultant’s shortage of Construction equipment, lack of proper consultant
supervision, limit of consultant timely response and proper solutions, delay of payment for
consultant and weak communication between construction parties.
