After completing this module, you should be able to:
Technology has taken over our lives tremendously, whether we admit it or not,
our lives revolve around technology. From our simple acquisition of our food, to the
simplest task of doing our laundry. Technology has made lives easier; technology has
made lives simpler. People whose lives were taken over technology has treated the
different social networking sites as their journal, their lives are out in the open. They
post their snacks, their outfits or even their whereabouts. These things were targeted
by hackers and people who have ill-intentions that is why the slogan “Think before You

What I Know
Social Networking Sites are tools that we can use to make communication
easier and faster. It is where we can share information, photos, videos, and many
more.
When using social media, all users are solely responsible for their content –
including posts, comments, likes, shares, tweets, re-tweets, follows, and favorites.
Practicing moral and ethical standards online is best achieved when adhering to these
social media etiquette standards.1

A. Wiki
A website which is a hypertext publication that allows internet users to
collaboratively contribute, delete, make changes, or correct information on the
content.2 It is managed by its audience directly using a web browser meaning, a
user or anyone using this website can participate or work jointly with a creator or
author of a written work in a wiki.4
A wiki uses software in the name of a wiki engine, also known as wiki
application. In 1995, Ward Cunningham coined to name the website Wiki wiki Web
and later on changed to Wiki which means, fast or swift in Hawaiian words.3
A wiki allows users to revise and update part of the content of the work of an
author or writer without restriction. However, being a responsible user, you should
cite your reliable sources from which the information you have added to the website
can be located.3
Examples of wikis that you can use in the web are the following:
1. Wikipedia - the most popular used website. It is a free encyclopedia,
written collaboratively by the people who use it. It contains information
of all kinds of topics or subjects. However, it is advisable to check
carefully the information you get from this website.3
2. Wikitravel - a project to create a free, complete, up- to- date, and reliable
worldwide travel guide.5
3. WikiNews - is a free-content news source wiki and a project of the
Wikimedia Foundation. The site works through collaborative journalism.6
4. Wikiquote - aims to produce collaboratively vast reference of quotations
from prominent people, books, films, proverbs, etc. and to be as proper
as possible in regard to the details of the quotations and also providing
the appropriate human reference of the quotation.7
C. Advantages
1. Anyone can edit, easy to use and learn
2. The wiki software keeps track of every edit made and it's a simple
process to revert back to a previous version of an article.
3. Widens access to the power of web publishing to non-technical users.
4. The wiki has no predetermined structure - consequently it is a flexible
tool which can be used for a wide range of applications.
5. There are a wide range of open source software wikis to choose from so
licensing costs shouldn't be a barrier to installing an institutional wiki.

website, displaying information in the reverse chronological order, with the latest
posts appearing first, at the top.9 It is a platform where a writer or a group of writers
share their thoughts, feelings, ideas, opinions, and views on an individual subject.
This website serves as a personal journal or diary for the writer, who is called a
blogger.3
Some of the trending topics or issues published are those in the field of food,
travel, beauty and fashion, and politics. Blogs are ranked based on the number of
searches made on Google.
Popular types of Blogs:
1. Food blog - contains bloggers’ popular places to eat delicious
menus or recipes, directions on how to get there, critiques of
food eaten, prices.
2. Travel blog - contains pictures and videos of travel experiences,
both local and international places. Bloggers feature beautiful
sceneries, places to eat, hotels and lodging, and directions on
how to go there for internet users.
3. Beauty blog - contains critiques and prices of beauty products,
ingredients, directions to use, and what they do to the skin, face,
and body.
4. Fashion blog - contains trends in fashion, seasonal clothing,
new fashion styles/designs from well-known brands, and prices.
5. Political blog - contains ideas, opinions, and observations on a
certain political issue.
