Academic Stress: Perceptions Towards the Academic Struggle of Grade 12 STEM Students

Introduction

Research enables us to answer the questions in our minds about such things and learn

how to discover things including the effects and who can benefit of a certain study. This study

aims to know the effects of Academic Stress towards the academic struggle of every Grade 12

STEM students. Academic works and activities, too much of them causes stress to every student

and especially those who are in the Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM).

Different kinds of situations can arise and can cause stress academically to every STEM

students. This can have effects upon the Physical, Emotional and Mental state of the students.

The Academic stress of Grade 12 STEM students needs solutions, so that they can fight back

against this such stressing situations that they may face. .Parents of these students who face this

kind of struggle may also be affected by the stress experienced by their children. On other

perspective, this study may also help Junior High school STEM aspirants in their decision

making. Worries about the future is the main factor causing stress among students. (Essel G. &

Owusu P.) This will give them advance knowledge about the struggle they may face in STEM so

that there will be no regrets upon their choice of academic track. As Charles F. Glassman quoted,

“Stress can destroy much more than just physical health. Too often, it eats away our hope, belief,

and faith.” This may be one of the possible effect of the academic stress.
Statement of the Problem

This study aims to understand and know the Academic Stress encountered by the Grade

12 STEM students with regards to the Academic struggles being faced. Consequently, this aims

to answer the following questions prepared with connection to the Academic stress experienced

by the Grade 12 STEM students:

1. What are the different causes of Academic stress?

2. What are the factors that contributed to Academic stress?

3. How does Academic struggle affect Academic performance in terms of the following:

a. Physical

b. Mental

c. Emotional

4. What actions can be done to address academic Stress?


Scope and Delimitation of the Study

This study focuses on the struggle experienced by the Grade 12 STEM students with

regards to its effect to their Physical, Mental and Emotional state of their Academic life. This

research will be conducted at Doña Hortencia Salas Benedicto National High School – Senior

High School students. Interviews will only be done inside the school campus during leisure time

or after school hours. The coverage of this research in terms of the area of locality, it will mainly

focus on the Senior High School public school located at Gurrea street, La Carlota City, Negros

Occidental during the Second Semester of the School Year 2017-2018.

This study will be conducted among Grade 12 students who have undergone and are still

undergoing upon experiencing Academic Stress. The data that will be gathered upon by this

research will be treated confidential for the privacy and confidentiality of the subject’s persona.

On the Data gathering, the researchers will follow the purposive sampling through in-depth

interview.
Significance of the Study

This Study may benefit the following:

Senior High School Grade 12 STEM students. This study can benefit the Grade 12 STEM

students the most for this study will help them to be aware of the possible effects of the stress

that they may encounter. By this, they can be observant to their attitude towards the upcoming

challenges brought upon by the academic struggle they might possibly encounter through the

school year.

Doña Hortencia Salas Benedicto National High School. This institution might benefit the

study in terms of helping the Administration to have a vivid understanding on the Academic

Stress experienced by the Grade 12 STEM students. The school could offer such programs that

can help those students who are undergoing stress to be encourage and motivated through having

in-school seminars that can help bring back their focus. The institution might be able to have

more clearer solutions which could help prevent and help students avoid stress in their academic

studies.

Upcoming Junior High School STEM aspirants. This study can benefit and help Junior High

School STEM aspirants in their decision making in choosing the right strand in their Senior

High school years. This study will also provide information and ideas about the Academic works
and activities they might encounter in STEM. This will help them to be knowledgeable in this

Academic track so that there will be no regrets or track shifting if they choose STEM over.

Parents of Grade 12 STEM students. This study can be influencial to Grade 12 STEM parents

for they can be aware of the struggles their children are experiencing in their academic studies.

This can help them to guide their children and motivate them to pursue harder and not to

pressure them more that can cause them to be more stressed.

Parents of the Junior High School STEM aspirants. This study may also be benefitial to

junior high school parents for this help them to be knowledgeable of what might their childrens

could experience or what struggles their children may encounter and might be able to guide

them accordingly to the right decision makings and prioritization.

Teachers. This study will help teachers to be aware of the stress their students also experience

and can slow down a bit in giving such stressful activity and homeworks. This could also help

teachers to realize what are the struggles that their students experiencing because of too much

academic works.
Schematic Diagram

The schematic diagram below shows the relationship between the effects of the academic

stress to the different Aspect of the research subject’s life. Every experiences and struggles of the

of the research subject will have an influence upon every state of their life Physically, Mentally

and Emotionally.
