STATISTICS

Introduction:
By Statistics we mean aggregates of facts to a marked extent by
multiplicity of causes, numerically expressed, enumerated or estimated
according to reasonable standard of accuracy, collected in a systematic
manner for a predetermined purpose and placed each other. Comparison of
statistical data leads us to make better decision.

Function of statistics:

 It presents facts in a definite form.

 It facilitates comparison.
 It simplifies the mass of figures.
 It helps in prediction.
 It helps in the formulation of suitable policies.

Frequency Distribution:
A frequency distribution refers to data classified on the some variable
that units are produced or consumed. There are two elements namely

(i) the Variable

(ii) the Frequency.

So the data is classified into number of classes with their frequencies is

known as Frequency Distribution.
Example :
Find the mean of the following distribution:

x 4 6 9 10 15

f 5 10 10 7 8

Solution:

Calculation table for arithmetic mean:

𝑥𝑖 𝑓𝑖 𝑥𝑖 𝑓𝑖

4 5 20

6 10 60

9 10 90

10 7 70

15 8 120

∑𝑓𝑖 =40 ∑𝑥𝑖 𝑓𝑖 =360

− ∑𝒙ⅈ𝒇ⅈ
Mean, 𝒙=
∑𝒇ⅈ
= 360/40
= 9

Thus, Mean = 9
Measures of Central Tendency :
The objective of statistical analysis is to get a single value that
describe the characteristics of the entire mass of clusted data. Such as a
value is called the central value or an ‘average’ or the expected value
of the variable.

Types of averages are :

(i) Arithmetic mean

(ii) Median
(iii) Mode
(iv) Geometric mean
(v) Harmonic mean

ARITHIMETIC MEAN
One method is to calculate the arithmetic mean. To do this, add up all the
values and divide the sum by the number of values. For example, if there
are a set of “n” numbers, add the numbers together for example: a + b +
c + d and so on. Then divide the sum by “n”.

− ∑𝑥
Formulae for arithmetic mean is ; 𝑥=
𝑛

Example
. The following data represent the number of books issued in a school
library on selected from 7 different days 7, 9, 12, 15, 5, 4, 11 find the
mean number of books.

Solution:

Hence the mean of the number of books is 9.

MEDIAN
Median is a statistical measure that determines the middle value of a
dataset listed in ascending order (i.e., from smallest to largest value).
The measure divides the lower half from the higher half of the dataset.

Example :
Find the median of the following:
4, 17, 77, 25, 22, 23, 92, 82, 40, 24, 14, 12, 67, 23, 29
Solution;

When we put those numbers in the order we have:

4, 12, 14, 17, 22, 23, 23, 24, 25, 29, 40, 67, 77, 82, 92,
There are fifteen numbers. Our middle is the eighth number:
The median value of this set of numbers is 24.

MODE
The mode is the value that appears most often in a set of data values. If
X is a discrete random variable, the mode is the value x at which the
probability mass function takes its maximum value. In other words, it is
the value that is most likely to be sampled.

Example :

Find the mode of 4, 4, 4, 9, 15, 15, 15, 27, 37, 48 data set.
Solution;
Given: 4, 4, 4, 9, 15, 15, 15, 27, 37, 48 is the data set.
As we know, a data set or set of values can have more than one mode if
more than one value occurs with equal frequency and number of time
compared to the other values in the set.
Hence, here both the number 4 and 15 are modes of the set.
EXERCISES :
1) In a mathematics test given to 15 students, the following marks (out of
100) are recorded: 41, 39, 48, 52, 46, 62, 54, 40, 96, 52, 98, 40, 42,
52, 60 Find the mean, median and mode of this data.

Solution;
A mathematics test given to 15 students, the following marks (out of 100) are recorded:
41, 39, 48, 52, 46, 62, 54, 40, 96, 52, 98, 40, 42, 52, 60

Find out
We have to find out the mean, median and mode of the given set of data
Solution
Sum of all the elements
Mean = = .
total number of elements
(41 + 39 + 48 + 52 + 46 + 62 + 54 + 40 + 96 + 52 + 98 + 40 + 42 + 50 + 60)
Mean = =
15
Mean = 54.8

Let us calculate the median now

Arranging the given data in ascending order, we get,
39, 40, 40, 41, 42, 46, 48, 52, 52, 52, 54, 60, 62, 96, 98
Here the number of elements is n = 15
Thus, the middle element is the median = 52
Mode = Element 52 occurs 3 times, which is the maximum number of times.
Hence, Mode = 52
Answer
For the given set of data
Mean=54.8
Median= 15
Mode=52
2) Find the mean from the following frequency distribution of marks
at a test in class.

Marks (x): 5 10 15 20 25 30 35 40 45 50

No. of students (f) 15 50 80 76 472 45 39 9 8 6

Solution;
Answer:-
Marks ( 𝑥 ) No. of students 𝑓𝑥
(𝑓)

5 15 75

10 50 500

15 80 1200

20 76 1520

25 472 11800

30 45 1350

35 39 1365

40 9 360

45 8 360

50 6 300

∑𝑓 =800 ∑𝑓𝑥 =18830

Let xˉ be the required mean
− ∑𝒇𝒙
(𝒙) = ∑𝒇
=80018830 =23.53

Hence, Mean =23.53

3) The number of ice cream with its variety is given below.
Present the data in pie chart.

ice-cream

Solution;

VANILLA
20%

STRAWBERRY CHOCOLATE
10% 50%

BUTTERSCOTCH
20%
