05 - Formula Sheet - Hydraulics

Basic hydraulic formulas are provided for calculating areas, volumes, flows, pressures, horsepowers, torques, and efficiencies. Key formulas include: - Area of a circle = πr^2 - Volume = area x length - Pump theoretical flow = volume per revolution x RPM / 231 - Pump actual flow accounting for efficiency = theoretical flow x pump efficiency - Horsepower provided by pump = gallons per minute x pressure / 1714

Basic Hydraulics Formula Sheet

Area calculations for circle: A = d² or A = r² Volume = area X length or stroke
( = 3.142 ) 4
(d is diameter, r is radius)
Area for rectangles: length X width Volume = length X width X height

PUMPS MOTORS GENERAL

Total (theoretical) flow in cubic inches, Total motor flow force exerted in pounds = area x PSI
V = volume per revolution of pump in cubic V = volume per revolution of
inches motor, in cubic inches pressure = pounds of force
N = RPM of pump N = RPM of motor
area (in²)
QT = V P x N QT = V M x N Area = force in pounds
Pressure in PSI
Divide by 231 in³ = 1 US Gallon Divide by 231 in³ = 1 US Gallon
Actual pump flow in gallons per sec, with Actual motor flow in gallons ←← Gallon per sec flow calculations;
known efficiency per sec, note the efficiency in different place,
V = volume per revolution of pump, in V=volume/ revolution of pumps lose efficiency and need
cubic inch motor in cubic inch bigger pump to compensate, motors
N = RPM of pump N = RPM of motor lose efficiency and need more flow

Q A =  v x VP x N Q A = VM x N

Theoretical flow in gallons per second; flow in gallons per second; Pump sizing in cubic inch per
Q T = VP x N revolution = GPM x 231/RPM
231 Q T = VM x N
Can multiply by 60 to get GPM 231
T=Fxd
T T = P x VP T T = P x V M T is torque in inch/pound
VP is pump displacement cubic inch per
2 2 revolution
Horsepower provided to the pump Torque in in/lbs
HPI = T x N HPO = T x N N is RPM
