CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION

This chapter discuses the background of the research, scope of the research,

statement of the research, objective of the research, and significance of the

research.

A. Background

Song is one of media that can be used to entertain our selves now days

there are some medical treatmnets using song. can change our feeling from sad to

be happy, gloomy, excited or being angry. Song also can motivate people, from

the choosen and beautiful words in lyrics will tell the touching and the deepest

meaning that will be telling through the writer or singer to listener, until the

listener will feel what are the messages in the song it self. Lyric in song is not

only words but it has full meaning that can bring our feeling into the song.

Many people claimed that music can reduce stress, listening to the music

can enhance our mood, someone who can receive and understand well the

meaning and message from music that will increase ther feeling to be better.

Regarding to the staments before song has a good impact for our life it is not only

for entertain our selves but it also can cure our ilness. Listening to the music is

one of fun activity that easy to do everytime and everywhere,, we can listen to

music without spend much money and time. We can listen to the music while we

are doing our jobs, studies, or only enjoy the moment. Furthermore colllection
favorite song is not difficult like it was, we can easier find in internet or ask to

people directly.

Talking about entertaiment especially in music, Ebiet G. ade is one of

singer and also the songwriter from Indonesia he was born on 21 april 1954 in

Central java, many albulms have been released by him. Most of Ebiet G. ade

songs consist of message related to our daily life such politic, dicipline,

responsibility, care for the enviroment, friendly and etcetera. Ebiet G. ade songs

also describe the chrateristic of people in indonesia, how people show action to

each other, enviroment or god.

In indonesia moral value cannot be separated in people daily life, in this

era education values can be founded easily in song, movie, or novel. Education

value can bring impact when people want to do do something they have to thik

about the cause and effect people are really consider about moral value, in Ebiet

G. Ade’ songs consist a lot of messages and also moral values that can be taken

as a lesson in our life, as the representative to advice and remind people through

his songs make many people in Indonesia like to sing his songs.

Because of the messages in all most every song created by Ebiet G. Ade

makes people in Indonesia like the songs. Related to the songs from Ebiet G. Ade

there are three songs have been selected by the writer to be analyzed.

In this research the writer is going to analyze three songs from Ebiet G.

Ade to find the education values in each part of the lyric. These songs are chosen

to be analyzed because many education values are used in these songs.


B. Scope of the Research

This research focuses on the lyrics which contains the education values in

three of Ebiet G. ade songs base on descriptive qualitative research using

grounded theory. (What songs that you will analyze...? harus

beri batasan pada lagu yang mana...?)

C. Statement of the Problem

1. What are the values of education contain in Ebiet G. Ades’ songs?

2. What education values are embedded in each lyric?

D. Objective of the Research

Related to the statements above, the research of objective is to know the

education values and the meaning of education values are embedded in three of

the songs from Ebiet G. Ade.

E. Significance of Research

The section discusses two main ideas regarding theoritical significance and

practical significance.

1. Theoretical significance

The result of this research is expected to contribute existing to analyse the

eduaction values in the song base on descriptive qualitative research.

2. Practical Significance

The result of this study are expected to be useful for :


1. Students

This research is expected to give more understsnding to students how to

analyse the education values in songs.

2. Teacher and Lecturer

This study can be used as an additional reference in teaching process, in

this case to analyse the education values contain in lyrics of songs.

3. For other Researhers

This result of this study can be used as a reference for the next researchers.
CHAPTER II

LITERATURE REVIEW

This chapter discusses the theoretical concept of all related theories

A. Theoretical Description

1. Definition Of Educaion value

Anik in Arif Sobirin et al., (2019:926) the source of education in Indonesia

is integrated into learning, especially social studies in learning, among others

national characters values. As cited from Immanuel kant in J.stephenson et.

Al., (2005)we would base our action could become a universal principle for

action. According to Megawangi in Heni kusumawati “Character eduaction is

to shape one’s personality through character education, and the result can be

seen in actual action, such as good attitude respect, honest, hard work and etc”.

Education in indonesia cannot be separated with national charater values, many

songs always tell and teach about moral values. According in Final report

study Austlralia values educationn, can be defined, as an explicit attempt to

teach about values. Such teaching fosters the developent of students’ values

and the indentified as important by the school, and helps students develop

dispositions to act in ceratain lways. Education encompasses teaching and

learning specific skill. And also something less tangible but more profound the

imparting of knowledge, positive judgment and well developed wisdom Abd.

Wakil (2015). Dewantara in Maya ningsih et al., (2018) states that character
education is “ manner education, moral education, pesonality education.

Character education is the embending of good and noble values to the human

soul .’’the main objectives of character education are the formation of manner,

personality, and behavior so that covers the effectivene and psychomotor

domains. According to Rudolf steiner “the real significance of modern

intellectual educatin in the world is that leads away from life”. According to

Immanual kant in J. Stenpheson et al (2005) moral value is “base actions upon

our sense of duty and responsibility and upon the fact that such action could

become a universal provides a source for moral principles and action”.

“Regarding to the statements above education values have role to enhance

students characters to be better. Any place where ‘intercourse’ communication,

and cooperation go on situation that extends the ‘preception of conection’ is

educational, morally eduational anything that promotes ‘growth’is an intance

ofmoral education Jarret in J.Stephenson

Indonesia’ charateristics are always described as a country that friendly,

polite, and religious. the management of national education in 2014⁄2015 at a

Glance states that “national education refers to education on the basis of

pancasila and the 19945 constitution and is rooted in religious values, national

culture of Indonesia, and one that responsive to the needs of the ever-changing

era. National educatin system is the overall compnents of education, which are

interelated in a integrated way in the pusuit of national education objectives”.

Many cultures in Indonesia teach about education values. According to j. Mark

and Monica J “Values are nourished by visions. If we were to revalue our


relations with our enviroment as we should, and then act on them the emergent

lifestyle might be some kind of neo-puritanism (although we would need to

guard against its potential for oppression)”. Goverment in Indonesia also stated

the rules in eduction to build students characters in education values.

According to Ministry of education 2013 in Mardiah baginda : :

a. Religious, is obedient attitudes and behaviors in implementation the

teaching of religion, tolerant of the implementation of other religious and

live in harmony with adherents another religion.

b. Honest, bahavior that is base on efforts on efforts to make as a person who

always be trusted in words, actions, or work.

c. Tolerance, attitudes and actions that respect differences in religion,

ethnicity, ethnicity, or opinion from others.

d. Discipline, ations that exhibit orderly behavior and comply with various

provisions and regulation.

e. Hard work, actions that exhibit orderly behavior and comlpy with various

provisions and regulation.

f. Creative, think and do something to produce new ways or results from

something alrealdy have.

g. Independent, attitudes and bahaviors that are not easy depend on others in

doing something.

h. Demoractic,ways to think, act that value he same right and obligation.

i. Curiousity, attitudes and actions that always try to find out more and extend

from something that has learned , seen, and heard.


j. Spirit of nationality, ways of thingking, acting and having insight that place

the interest of the nation and state.

k. Love the motherland, ways of thingking, acting and having insight that

place the interest of the nation and state.

l. Appreciating achievement, attitudes and actions that encourage someone to

produce something, useful for the community, and recognize to others.

m. Friendly and comunnicatif, attitudes and actions that encourage someone to

produce something, useful for the community, and recognize to others.

n. Love in peace, attitudes and actions that encourage someone to produce

something, useful for the community, and recognize to others.

o. Like to read, the habit of providing time to read various readings to get

virtue.

p. Caring environment, attitude and actions that always try to prevent damage

to enviroment around.

q. Social care, attitudes and action that always want to provide assistance to

others and society in need.

r. Responsible, the attitude and behavior of person to carry out duties, and

obligation, which is it should do towards society, social, enviroment,

country, or god.

2. Song

Song is the way to express ideas, felling, amd messages. Song is a short

poem or number of verses set to music Oxford in Mohammad kharisma (2007).

Harnum (2001) says that “ music has magical power. It can transport you into an
altered state, heal, sickness, purify the body and mind, and work miracles in

nature. Music is a complex phenomenom, one involving a host of cultural,

phenomenological, cognitive, cultural, and music-artistc factors Edward Pearsall

and Byron Almen (2006). According to Jamalus in Adde hikamat “Songs Lyric

are collection of words, short poems and it is usually to be sung accompanied by

music”. sung According to Peter fawcett (2003) “the study of sound belongs to a

branch of linguistics called phonetics, which analyzes the sounds of language

using a highly technical terminology”. There are many messages we can get from

the part of lyric, in this study the writer focuses on the messages of education

values in suci wulan khodijah (2019) states that the song has to singable and the

text must be sounded for the music. Tyasrinestu in Maya ningsih et., al (2018)

explains that the existence of songs must have funtions and benefits in society,

and music as a medium to convey messages in the lyrics. Mcray in Qurrotul ain

(2013) Explained that, sounds in sounds is an important part of music and rhyme,

because the result of music is a beautiful sound and if connect with the lyic, will

be a song that can be enjoy to earing by people. Futhermore according to Minette

mans (2009) states that “meaning does not stand alone. There are lodged wthin the

musical content, and there is act of meaning making. Meaning making involves

understanding, interpreting, and producing music. Meanings are comprehended

along with the value that underline the meaning, even if these values might not be

verbalized. The meaning attached to musical customs are learnt by enculturation.

They are often either “spelt out” in gesture or expressions (especially for the

young) or formally taught. Musical knowledge (knowing how and that) is


deepened and enriched by the meaning making process. According to Haris

Bergers’ in Norman and Yvonna “observing that pieces of music in infused with

a quality of aggresiveness, for example is only the staring point of our description

of participants’ experience, merely adding contextual and bodily dimension to the

account does not suffice the right rage of american Christian metal band and

disgusted rege of an English hardcore outfit are not the same”. “The music of lyric

makes them memorable and their brevity contributes to the intensity of their

emotional expression” Carol jago, et al in Evi vitria (2013). Regarding to the

statements song is not only words on the paper but it full of messages, deep

meaning,, intrepretation from the writer or singer to the listener until the listener

can feel and understand the meaning.

3. Meaning

According to Mildred (1998) “ taksonomic studies, componential analyses,

the study of antonyms and synonyms, and the “unpacking’’ of the concepts of

meaning components contained in a world of deal with the fact that the same

meaning will accur as a part of the meaning of various words”. Catford (1978)

says that “language is a type of patterned human behaviuor. It is way, perhaps the

most important way, in which human beings interact in social situations”.

According to Petter fawcett (2003) “connotatative meaning as just one aspect of

associative meaning, all those elements are attach in some way to a word without

being a ‘real’ or central part of its meaning and which can vary enormously from

person to person or culture to culture. Regarding to statements above words


meaning have many interpretation base on the person, culture, or it can become

connotative meaning regarding to people understanding.

4. Qualitative Approach Procedures

According to Sharan (Tahun...? Sumbernya...?) “ Qualitative

researhers study things in their natural setting, attempting to make sense of, or

interpret phenomena in term of meanings people bring to them. The constant

comparative method of data analysis is widely used in all kinds of qualitative

studies, weather or not the researher is building a grounded theory. This perhaps

explains the indiscriminate of the term grounded theory to describe other types of

qualitative research guidelines of the data analysis.

a. Grounded Theory

Grounded theory was introduced to the research lexicon by Barney and

Anselm Strauss in the 1960s, particularly with the publication of the discover, of

Grounded Theory in 1967. According to Glaser in Helen and Gary (2016) “

grounded theory (GT) is a research method concerned with generation of theory,

which is ‘grouded’ in data that has been systematically collected and analysed.

According to Corbin and Strauss in Sharan (2016) differentiates grounded theory

from the others of qualitative research is it is focus in building theory. According

to See dey in Irving seidman (2006) “the process of noting what is interesting,

labeling it, and putting it into appropriate files in called “classifying” or in some

sources, “coding” data. Furthermore, grounded theory is particularly useful for

addresing question abou process that is how something changes everytimes. Data
from grounded theory can come from interview, obsevation, or documentary

material.

b. Procedures for conducting grouded theory

Regarding to Strauss and Robin in John (2007) to ilustrate grounded

theory procedures because their systematic approach is helpful to individuals

learning about and playing grounded thery research.

1. The researche r needs to begin by determing if grounded theory is best

suited to study. Grounded theory is a a good design to use when a theory is

not available to expalin a process.

2. The research question that inquirer asks of participats will focus on

understanding how individualis experince the process and indentifying the

step in the process.

3. These question are typically asked in interviews, although other form of

data may also be collected, such observation, documents, and audiovisual

material. (In this case the researcher is not going to do interview because

the data is going be analyse from the songs).

4. The analysis of the data process in stages. This involves line by line

coding where concepts and key phrahes are indentified and high lighted

and move into subcategories, then categories. This breaks the data down

into conceptual components and researcher can start to theorise or reflect

on what they are reading and understanding-making sense of the data. The

data from each participant will be constantly compared for similarities. In


open coding the researher from categories of information about the

phenomenombeing studied by segmenting information. Within each

category, the investigator find several properties, or sub categories, and

look for data to dimensionalize, or show extreme possibilities on

continuum of, the property.

5. In axial coding, the investigator assembles the data in new ways after open

coding. At this stage relationship are identified between the categories,

and connection indentified. This presented using a coding paradigm or

logic diagram (visual model) in which the researcher indentifies a central

phenomenom cental category about the phenomenon, explores causal

condtion categories of condition are influnence the phenomenom,

specifies strategies actions or interctions that result from the cental

phenomenom, indentifies the context and intervening condition the narrow

and broad condition that influence the strategies, and delineates the

consequences outcomes of the strategis for this phenomenom

6. In selective coding, at stage relationships are indentified between the

categories, and connections indentified. The researcher may write a story

line that conecttc the categories, alternative, propositions or hypothese

may be specified that state predicted relationship.

Some steps above are going to be applied to analysis education values in

Ebiet G. Ades’ songs..

B. Relevant previous Research


There are two researchers that related to this study. The first research was

conducted by maya ningsih, Triyanto, and Totok sumaryanto F (2019). This study

is “ Timang cenggok song in tanjungbalai city: character value analysis and music

composition ”. the aim is to examine the character values contained in Timang

cenggok song. The results of this study are the Timang cenggok song contains the

character value that aims to build the childs’ personality into religion person, has a

goog moral and be able to sosialize in the community.

The second previous study is belong to a journal written by Abd. Wakil

(2015). The title is “ An analysis of moral and educational values on Madura folk

songs. The objective of this study is to know the moral value found on madura

folk songs, to know how the meaning of madurase life which is contained in

madura song lyrics. Both of the researhers above are relatated to this current study

which is coducted to analyse the education values in Ebiet G. Ade songs.

Furthermore, the researcher uses the previous studies as base references in

conducting this study.


CHAPTER III

METHOD

This chapter discusses the method of this research, research field,

technique of collecting data, and technique of analysis data.

A. Research Method

According to Sharan ana Elizabeth in common researh is notion of

inquiring into, investigating something in a systematic manner. According to

Creswell in Mohammad kharisma (2017) stated that qualitative research is a

research methodology which is it is proces, meaning, amd understanding are

known trough words and pictures. According to Donald, Et., al “ qualitative

research seek to understand a phenomenom by focusing on the total picture rather

than breaking it down into variables”. Furthermore John w. Creswell (2007) states

that “ the research design process in qualitative research begins with

philopsophical assumptions that inquirer make in deciding to undertaken a

qualitative study”. In this research the writer will apply a qualitative research

consedering the charateristic of study deals with analysis education values from

the lyrics of songs. Qualitative research is fundamentally about examing how

people make meaning. Most typically, researhers have analyzed what people say

(in interview or in written documents) and what people do by observing them and

writing down field notes. They also do by art, in visual art, in symbol, in theater

base art, and through photography, music, dance story, or poetry. Regarding to the

statement before In this study qualiative research method will be used because it
does not deal with numbers and statiscally computation like those in quantitative

research. In this study will be focus on analysis education values from Ebiet G.

Ade’s lyrics songs. The writer is going to use descripitive qualitative approach in

fiding education values in every part of lyric.

B. Data source

The source of the data is taken from three of Ebiet G. Ades’ song the

lyrics in indonesian versin an English version are downloaded from internet,

wajah), masih ada waktu is from https:⁄⁄www.abcsonglyrics.com⁄ebiet-g-

ade⁄masih-ada-waktu.html), and the last is untuk kita renungkan is from

http:⁄∕hmwweb.wordpress.com∕⁄2008⁄05⁄13⁄untuk-kita-renungkan-ebiet-g-ade⁄. The

data will be the result of analysis education values from the lyrics of song .

C. Tecnique Of Data Collection

The instruments of the researh will be the writer and the documents. The

writer her self as the first instrument will collect and analysis the data and

information. The steps of collecting data will be following :

1. Choose the songs and download


2. Downloand the lyrics of the songs with English version and indonesia

version

3. Listening to the songs for several times to find the education values in the

liric of songs

4. Write the part of liric related to education values

5. Analizying the education values in every lyric.

D. Data Analysis

Wardoyo in Harimurti Jatikusumo (2012) suggests that data collection in

the study of discourse is conducted through clode reading. Close reading is done

to come to the comprehensive understanding of the song lyrics as a whole. “

There are three concurrent flows of activity in the process of analyzing the data

data condensation, data display, and conclusion drawing or verivication” as cited

in Miles et. Al., in Maulana (2019). According to to statement the writer is going

to analyze the lyrics of song by applying the close reading start from the first step,

the writer will download the songs and the lyric of the songs in English and

idonesia lyric. The writer is going to listen the song and chooses the part of the

lyric which consist education values. The second step the writer will analyze

every part related in education values, and the last step is representing the data

after analyzing the writer is going to reported which part of the lyric consist more

of education values.
