Fibre To Fabric

The document discusses the process of turning fibres into fabric. It defines fibres as thin strands used to make yarns and differentiates between natural fibres obtained from plants and animals versus synthetic fibres made from chemicals. It describes ginning as the process of separating cotton fibres from seeds, and how jute fibres are obtained from immersed and rotted plant stems. The document also explains spinning as the process of making yarn from fibres by drawing them out and twisting them together, and that people first learned to weave fabrics from twigs, grass, vines and animal fleece thousands of years ago in early agricultural communities.

LESSON – 3

FIBRE TO FABRIC
Answer the following:

1. What are fibres?

The thin strands of thread which are used to make yarns are called fibres.

2. Differentiate natural fibres and synthetic fibres.

The fibres that are obtained from plants and animals are called natural fibres
Eg: Cotton, Wool, Silk

The fibres which are made from chemical substances or which are not
obtained from the plant and animal sources are called synthetic fibres.
Eg: Polyester, Nylon, Rayon

3. Define ginning of cotton.

The process of separating fibres from the seeds of cotton is called ginning
of cotton.

4. Explain how jute is obtained from the jute plant.

Jute fibre is obtained from the stem of the jute plant. The stems of the
harvested plants are immersed in water for a few days. The stems rot and fibres
are separated by hand. These fibres are converted into yarns to make fabrics.

5. Describe the process of spinning.

The process of making yarn from fibres is called spinning. In this process,
fibres from a mass of cotton wool are drawn out and twisted. This brings the
fibres together to form a yarn. Spinning can be done by hand, takli, charkha and
also with the help of machines.

6. When did people learn to make fabrics?

When people began to settle in agricultural communities, they learnt to

weave twigs and grass into mats and baskets. Vines, animal fleece or hair were
twisted together into long strands. These strands were woven into fabrics.
