6. DEFINITIONS
6.1 For the purpose of this specification, the definitions contained in JSS 50101 and JSS
50102 together with the following shall apply.
6.2 Critical Resistance - For a given rated dissipation and a given rated voltage, there is only
one value of resistance at which there will be full rated dissipation. This resistance is
commonly referred to as ‘Critical Resistance’. For values of resistance below the critical value,
the rated voltage is never reached and for values of resistance above the critical value, the
dissipation becomes lower than rated.
6.3 Limiting Voltage – The maximum DC or AC (rms) voltage which may be applied
between the terminations of a resistor.
6.4 Rated dissipation – The rated dissipation is the dissipation for continuous cyclic operation
at 70° C, except for patterns RFGP4 and RFGP12 for which the rated dissipation shall be at
125°C .It is based on Life test and is subject to the limiting voltage not being exceeded.
6.5 Rated Resistance – The resistance value which is indicated upon the resistor.
6.6 Rated Voltage – The DC or AC (rms) voltage calculated from the square root of the
product of the rated resistance and the rated dissipation.
Note: At high value of resistance, the rated Voltage may not be applicable (see clause 6.2).
6.7 Selection Tolerance – The spread of resistance from the rated value at the time of
manufacture.
6.8 Stability – The change in resistance value under storage or working condition.
Note: During storage and under working conditions the resistance value may change beyond the
limits of initial selection tolerance due to stability factor.
6.9 Style Reference – The style references used in this specification are abbreviation to
identify families of fixed resistors. They are derived as follows: -
(a) The first two letters 'R' and 'f'’ represent the type of component - resistor,
fixed.
(b) The subsequent letters represent a particular type of resistor.
(c) The number immediately following the letters together with the preceding
letters constitutes a pattern.
(d) The last number following the hyphen indicates the rated dissipation.
Example:
For resistor fixed, general purpose, carbon composition with a rated dissipation of 2
watts, the style reference is RFGP1-2.0.
7.1 Where materials, processes and finishes are specified in this specification, they are
mandatory. Attention is drawn to the requirement is JSSS 50102 that material, processes and
finishes shall not be changed significantly, without prior approval of LCSO.
7.2 Workmanship, process and finishes – Resistors shall manufacture and processed in a
careful workmanlike manner in accordance with good design and sound engineering practice.
8. MARKING

specification.
12.3.1 Resistance Measurement – The measurement accuracy shall be within the following
limits:
12.3.1.1 For absolute resistance measurements – 10 per cent of the specified selection
tolerance.
12.3.1.2 For measurement of variation of resistance – 10 per cent of the specified maximum
change of resistance.
Whenever the term `As specified' offers against the `Specific Test Conditions' or
`Requirements', it indicates that details are given in the corresponding clauses of JSS 50400.
Test conditions and requirements peculiar to the range of standards defined herein are given

13.15 Climatic As specified, at the severity
shown in clause 16.
14.2 Permissible
15.1 Intended Use – These resistors are general-purpose resistors with stability ranging from
±10 to ±0.05 per cent. The temperature coefficient varies from ±1200 ppm/°C for the least able
to ±5 ppm/°C for the most stable types. The maximum face temperature at rated dissipation
varies between 130°Cand °C. The range laid out covers a wide spectrum of requirements, the
tolerances ranging from broad to semi-precision nature.
15.2 Construction – The resistors shall consist of a film type resistance element and in the
case of insulated styles, protected against exposure to humidity and temperature conditions by
an enclosure or coating of moisture resistant insulating material,
15.4 Mounting – Under conditions of severe shock or nation or a combination of bother, the
resistors of all patterns shall be mounted in such a fashion that the body of the resistor be
mounted in such a fashion that the body of the resistor is restrained from movement with
respect to the mounting. I shall be noted that if clamps are used, certain electrical
characteristics of the resistor shall be altered. The dissipating qualities of the resistor shall be
altered. The dissipating qualities of the resistor shall be enhanced or heat conductor. Under less
ever conditions, these resistor may be supported by their leads only. The lead lengths shall be
kept as short as possible, 6.35 mm or less preferred, out not longer than 15.875 mm. The longer
the lead, the more likely that a mechanical failure will occur.
15.5 A heat shunt is desirable when soldering smaller styles into equipments and is essential
for all styles of 0.125 W rated dissipation and lower.
15.5 Electrostatic Charge from Packaging– Under several combinations of conditions, the
resistors of patters RFGP4 and RFGO12 packaged loosely in polyethylene bags, can be
electrically damaged by electrostatic charges and drift from specified valued. Users shall
consider this phenomenon when ordering these resistors.
23
15.6 Derating for Optimum Performance– Because all of the electrical energy dissipated by
a resistor is converted into heat energy, the temperature of the surrounding air is an influencing
factor when selecting a particular resistor for a specific application at specific temperatures;
however, in actual use, the resistor may not be operating at these temperatures. When the
desired characteristic and the anticipated maximum ambient temperatures have been
determined, a safety factor of 2 applied to the wattage is recommended in order to ensure the
selection of a resistor having an adequate wattage - dissipation potential.
15.7 Resistance Tolerance – The operation of these resistors under the ambient conditions
for which equipment is designed may cause permanent or temporary changes in resistance,
sufficient to exceed their initial tolerance. In particular, operation at extreme temperatures may
cause relatively large temporary change in resistance.
15.8 Design Tolerance – Combined effects of use and environment may result in a ±2
percent variation in resistance while continuing operates properly.
15.9 Pulse Applications – When metal film resistors are used low duty cycle pulse circuits,
peak voltage should not exceed a times the rated continuous working voltage. However, if the
quietly cycle is high or the pulse width is appreciable, even though average power is within
ratings, the instantaneous temperature rise may be excessive, requiring a resistor of higher
wattage rating. Peak power dissipation should not exceed four times the maximum rating of the
resistor under any conditions.
15.10 End Caps or Terminations - The connection between the resistor element itself and the
pigtails or leads that connect it into the circuit must be so good that no possible combination of
conditions met in the proposed service can cause an intermittent connection.
15.11 End Caps - When end caps are used in construction of the resistor, the misalignment of
the cap with respect to the core all not exceed 3 degrees.
This list gives details of resistors, fixed, general purposes, which have been selected as
standards for use in Service electronic equipment.
