LEARNING ACTIVITY SHEET NO. 7

DIVISION OF POLYNOMIALS

Name of the learner:_________________________ Section:___________

School:_______________________________ Date:______________

I. Learning Competency: Performs Division of Polynomials using Long Division

and Synthetic Division. (M10AL-lg-1)
II. Instructions: This activity sheet focuses on division of polynomials (using long
division and synthetic division). Below are the activities with regard to this topic.
Read the directions of every activity and answer what is asked.
III. Key Concepts: Polynomial division is an algorithm for dividing a polynomial by
another polynomial of the same or lower degree.

Steps in dividing polynomials (using long division):

1. Set up long division.

2. Divide 1st term dividend with 1st term divisor.
3. Multiply by divisor.
4. Answer and subtract.
5. Bring down next.
6. Repeat step 2.
7. Final answer should be written in the form of

Exercises 2.1
Directions: Divide the following polynomials using long division method.

1.

2.

3.

2
Activity 3: Dividing Polynomials using Synthetic Division

Example 3. Divide P(x) = 2x³+6x²+29 by x+4.

Steps in dividing polynomials (using synthetic division):

Step 1: Arrange the coefficients of P(x) in 2 6 0 29

descending powers of x, placing 0s for
the missing terms. The leading
coefficient of P(x) becomes the first entry 2
of the third row.

Step 2: Place the value of r in the upper - 4 2 6 0 29

left corner. In this example, x - r = x+4 =
x – (-4), so r = -4. 2

Step 3: The first number in the second -4 2 6 0 29

row (-8) is the product of r(-4) and the -8
number in the third row(2) of the 2 -2
preceding column. The second number
in the third row (-2) is the sum of the two
numbers (6 and -8) above it.
Step 4: Repeat the procedure described -4 2 6 0 29
in step 3 until the last number in the third -8 8 -32
row is obtained. 2 -2 8 -3
Step 5: Write the quotient Q(x).Note that
the degree of Q(x) is one less than the Q(x) = 2x² - 2x + 8, R = -3 is the final
degree of P(x). The entries in the third answer.
row give the coefficients of Q(x) and the
remainder R.
Exercises 3.1

2 6 18 0

Answer: Divisor ____________ Dividend ____________ Quotient ___________

4. . -4 -3 1 0 -208

12 -52 208

-3 13 -52 0

Answer: Divisor ____________ Dividend ____________ Quotient ___________

5. 5 2 1 -7 -240

10 55 240

2 11 48 0

Answer: Divisor ____________ Dividend ____________ Quotient ___________

Exercises 3.2
Directions: Find the quotient and remainder using synthetic division method.

1. (2x³ - 5x² - x + 3 ) ( x + 3)

2. (2x³ - 5x² - 8x + 15) ( x - 3)

3. (x³ + x + 5) ( x- 3)
