DME Mid Term Question Paper

This document contains a mid-term exam for a Design of Machine Elements course. It consists of 5 questions, with question 1 being mandatory and selecting the correct answer for 5 multiple choice sub-questions. Questions 2-5 involve calculating mechanical properties and dimensions for various machine elements like shafts and pulleys, given information about loads, materials properties, safety factors, and stress conditions. Students are instructed to answer any 4 of the 5 questions.

th
6 Semester Mid-term Exam-2023
Subject: Design of Machine Elements (DME) Code: 102601
Time: 2 Hours Total Marks: 20

Answer any four questions in which question no. 1 is mandatory. There are no negative
marks.
1. Choose the Correct Answer: [5]
i. The notch sensitivity q is expressed in terms of fatigue stress concentration factor K f and
theoretical stress concentration factor Kt,

ii. Two shafts A and B are made of the same material. The diameter of the shaft A is twice as
that of shaft B. The power transmitted by the shaft A will be ........... of shaft B.
(a) Twice
(b) Four times
(c) Eight times
(d) Sixteen times

iii. The S-N curve for steel becomes asymptotic nearly at

(a) 103 cycles
(b) 104 cycles
(c) 105 cycles
(d) 106 cycles

iv. A steel spindle transmits 48 kNm. The angular deflection should not exceed 0.25° per metre
of the spindle. If the modulus of rigidity for the material of the spindle is 84 GPa, the diameter
of the spindle is:
(a) 35 mm
(b) 50 mm
(c) 70 mm
(d) 100 mm

v. The whirling speed of a rotating shaft depends on its:

(a) mass and flexural stiffness.
(b) mass, flexural stiffness and eccentricity.
(c) mass and eccentricity.
(d) Only flexural stiffness.
2. A shaft is driven by means of a motor placed vertically below it. The pulley on the shaft
is 1500 mm in diameter and has belt tensions 6 kN and 2 kN on the tight side and slack side of
the belt respectively. Both these tensions may be assumed to be vertical. If the pulley be
overhang from the shaft, the distance of the centre line of the pulley from the centre line of the
bearing being 350 mm, find the diameter of the shaft. Assuming maximum shear strength of
100 MPa and maximum tensile strength of 150 MPa. Take factor of safety as 2. [5]

3. Compare the weight, torque carrying capacity and stiffness of a hollow shaft of the same
external diameter as that of solid shaft. The inside diameter of the hollow shaft being half the
external diameter. Both the shafts have the same material and length. [5]

4. A machine component is subjected to a bending stress which fluctuates between + 350

MPa and – 150 MPa. Determine the value of ultimate strength according to
1. Gerber relation;
2. Goodman relation; and
3. Soderberg relation.
Take:
Yield strength (y) = 0.55*Ultimate strength(u);
Endurance strength (Se) = 0.45*Ultimate strength(u); and
Factor of safety = 2. [5]

5. A non-rotating shaft supporting a load of 2.5 kN is shown in figure. The shaft is made
of brittle material, with an ultimate tensile strength of 300 MPa. The factor of safety is 3.
Determine the dimensions of the shaft.
Take Kt = 1.6 [5]
