1. INTRODUCTION

1.1. Origin of Problem:

The origin of these problems can be traced to a number of factors, including:

 The limitations of current sensor technology: Gas and water sensors are not perfect, and
they can be susceptible to false positives and negatives, particularly in noisy or cluttered
environments. False positives and negatives of gas and water sensors: A study by the
National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) found that false positives and
negatives are a significant problem with gas and water sensors. The study found that the
false positive rate for gas sensors ranged from 10% to 90%, and the false negative rate
ranged from 1% to 20%. The false positive rate for water sensors was lower, ranging from
5% to 20%, but the false negative rate was higher, ranging from 10% to 40%.

 The challenges of natural language processing (NLP): NLP is the field of computer
science that deals with the interaction between computers and human
language. Developing NLP systems that can reliably understand and respond to
voice commands is a complex and challenging task.
 The security and privacy risks associated with the Internet of Things (IoT): IoT
devices are connected to the internet, which makes them vulnerable to hacking and
other attacks. Voice-controlled home automation systems are particularly vulnerable
because they often have access to sensitive information, such as home security and
personal data. A study by the security firm Avast found that voice-controlled home
automation systems are vulnerable to a number of security and privacy threats. The
study found that attackers can exploit vulnerabilities in voice-controlled home
automation systems to gain access to homes, steal personal data, and even launch
physical attacks.
 The high cost of developing and deploying voice-controlled home automation
systems: These systems are still relatively new, and the cost of developing and
deploying them is still relatively high. This is a barrier to entry for many
companies, and it can also make these systems less affordable for consumers.
 The lack of standardization in the voice-controlled home automation industry: The
lack of a standard means that there is no guarantee that different devices and
systems will be compatible with each other. This can make it difficult and expensive
for consumers to build and integrate voice-controlled home automation systems
1.2 Definition of Problem

a. While people are pursuing ever-growing high quality of their lives today. This
leads to more and more facilities and home appliances poured into their buildings.
How to control and manage these versatile facilities and appliances in a house.

b. Usually conventional wall switches are located in different corners of a house and,
thus necessitate the need of manual operations like pressing to turn the loads on or
off. It becomes very difficult for the elderly or physically handicapped people to
operate them. How to help them?

1.3 Novelty of Problem

It is a system that allows you to control and manage your home appliances and
facilities remotely, using a variety of devices and methods. This can make life much
easier for the elderly or physically handicapped, as they can control their appliances

smartphones, tablets, and voice assistants. This means that people with limited
mobility can turn on and off their lights, adjust their thermostat, and control
other appliances without having to get up and move around.
 Voice control: Many smart home systems support voice control, which means
that users can control their appliances using simple voice commands. This can
be especially helpful for people with limited mobility or dexterity.
 Automated schedules: Smart home systems can be programmed to automate
certain tasks, such as turning on the lights at sunset or turning off the TV when
you go to bed. This can free up people's time and make it easier for them to
manage their daily lives.
 Fall detection and other safety features: Some smart home systems also offer
safety features, such as fall detection and emergency alerts. These features can
help to keep the elderly and physically handicapped safe and independent.

Here are some specific examples of how smart home automation can help the elderly
and physically handicapped:
 A person with mobility issues can use a voice assistant to turn on the lights in
their home without having to get up from their bed or wheelchair.
 A person with arthritis can use a smart thermostat to adjust the temperature in
their home without having to get up and reach for the thermostat.
 A person who is blind can use a smart door lock to open and close their front
door without having to find and fumble with keys.

make it easier for people with limited mobility or dexterity to use appliances.
For example, there are grip extenders, jar openers, and reachers.
 Install smart home devices. Smart home devices can allow people to control
their appliances remotely, using a variety of devices such as smartphones,
tablets, and voice assistants.
 Get help from a professional. If you are unsure how to make your home more
accessible, you can consult with an occupational therapist or other healthcare
profession.
2. LITERATURE REVIEW

2.1 New and improved sensors:

Researchers around the world are constantly developing new and improved sensors.
These sensors are more accurate, reliable, and cost-effective than existing sensors. One
example of this is the development of optical gas sensors that can detect a wider range
of gases and that are less susceptible to noise and interference.

Example Optical gas sensors work by detecting the light that is absorbed by gas
molecules. Different gases absorb light at different wavelengths, so optical gas sensors
can be used to identify and quantify a wide range of gases.

Optical gas sensors have a number of advantages over other types of gas sensors, such
as electrochemical sensors and metal oxide semiconductor (MOS) sensors. Optical gas
sensors are highly sensitive and selective, and they can be used to detect gases in real
time. They are also less susceptible to noise and interference from other environmental
factors.

2.2More sophisticated algorithms:

Machine learning and statistical techniques are being used to develop new and
improved algorithms for gas leakage detection and water level control. These
algorithms are more accurate and reliable than traditional methods, and they have the
potential to revolutionize the way these tasks are carried out.

For example, machine learning algorithms can be trained on data from known gas leaks
to identify patterns and make predictions about where and when new leaks are likely to
occur. This information can be used to develop systems that can detect gas leaks early
on, even before they become apparent to humans.

Statistical techniques can also be used to improve the accuracy and reliability of gas
leakage detection and water level control systems. For example, statistical techniques
can be used to identify outliers and anomalies in sensor data that may indicate a gas leak
or water level problem.

Researchers are also developing machine learning and statistical algorithms to develop
water level control systems that can predict water demand and adjust water levels
accordingly. This can help to ensure that water resources are used efficiently and that
water levels are maintained at safe and sustainable levels.

Overall, machine learning and statistical techniques are promising tools for improving
the accuracy, reliability, and cost-effectiveness of gas leakage detection and water level
control systems. These techniques have the potential to make a significant impact on
safety, efficiency, and sustainability in a wide range of industries and applications.
2.3 More user-friendly and accessible systems:

Researchers are developing home automation systems that are more user-friendly,
accessible, and affordable. These systems are easier to install, use, and maintain, and
they can be controlled using simple and intuitive interfaces, such as voice commands.
Researchers are also making these systems more affordable by using less expensive
components and integrating them with existing home appliances and devices. Overall,
these new home automation systems have the potential to make a significant impact on
the way we live and work.

2.4 Integration with IoT platforms:

Researchers are integrating home automation systems with IoT platforms such as
Amazon Web Services (AWS) to make them more powerful and versatile. AWS can
help to increase the scalability, reliability, and functionality of home automation
systems, while also reducing costs, improving security, and accelerating innovation.

Here is a brief summary of the benefits of integrating home automation systems with
AWS:

 Increased scalability
 Improved reliability
 New features and functionality
 Reduced costs
 Improved security
 Accelerated innovation

Overall, the integration of home automation systems with AWS is a promising area of
research with the potential to revolutionize the way we live and work.

2.5 Voice Powered Emergency System:

Home automation systems that are integrated with IoT platforms such as Amazon Web
Services (AWS) can automatically call for help if a gas leak or water overflow is
detected. This is possible because AWS provides a wide range of services, including
machine learning and artificial intelligence.

For example, a home automation system could use AWS machine learning to analyze
sensor data and detect anomalies that may indicate a gas leak or water overflow. Once a
leak or overflow is detected, the system could use AWS to automatically call a
predefined emergency contact number.
This feature can provide peace of mind to homeowners, knowing that their homes are
being monitored and that help will be called if necessary. It can also be especially
beneficial for elderly or disabled homeowners who may not be able to call for help
themselves.

Here is a short example of how this feature could work:

1. A gas leak sensor in a home detects an elevated level of methane gas.

2. The gas leak sensor sends data to a home automation system.
3. The home automation system uses AWS machine learning to analyse the sensor
data and detect the gas leak.
4. The home automation system uses AWS to automatically call the homeowner's
emergency contact number.
5. The emergency contact number is answered by a dispatcher, who sends help to
the home.

This feature is still under development, but it has the potential to revolutionize the way
we keep our homes safe. By integrating home automation systems with IoT platforms,
we can create homes that are more intelligent and proactive in protecting us from
hazards.

2.6 Preventive Maintenance Systems:

Voice-powered preventive maintenance systems can be used to remind users to test

their gas leak detectors and water level sensors regularly. These systems use natural
language processing and machine learning to understand the user's voice commands and
to provide reminders about important tasks.

This can help people to avoid forgetting to test important safety devices, which can
make their homes safer and well-maintained. These systems are still under
development, but they have the potential to make a significant impact on home safety
and maintenance.

2.7 Voice Assistants

Voice assistants such as Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant can now understand and
respond to a wide range of natural language commands, including commands to control
smart home devices such as gas leak detectors and water level sensors. This capability
has a number of benefits, including convenience, safety, and efficiency.

Overall, the development of voice assistants that can understand and respond to natural
language commands is a significant advancement in smart home technology. Voice
assistants make it easier, safer, and more efficient to control smart home devices.
3. RESEARCH GAPS

1. Developing a gas leakage detection system that can be integrated with

existing smart home systems:

Researchers are developing ways to integrate existing smart home devices with gas leak
detectors and water level sensors. This would allow people to use their existing smart
home devices to monitor for gas leaks and to take appropriate action if a leak is
detected.

For example, a smart home system could be programmed to automatically turn off the
gas supply if a gas leak is detected. It could also be programmed to send a notification
to the homeowner's smartphone, or to call a predetermined emergency contact number.

This integration would make it easier and more convenient for people to monitor for gas
leaks and to take appropriate action if a leak is detected. It could also help to prevent
accidents and costly repairs.

Here is a very short example of how this integration could work:

 A smart home system receives a notification from a gas leak detector that a gas
leak has been detected.
 The smart home system automatically turns off the gas supply to the home.
 The smart home system sends a notification to the homeowner's
smartphone, informing them of the gas leak.
 The homeowner takes appropriate action, such as contacting the gas company or
evacuating the home.

This integration is still under development, but it has the potential to make homes safer
and more secure.

2. Developing a gas leakage detection system that is more accurate and

reliable:

Existing gas leakage detection systems can sometimes give false alarms or fail to detect
real gas leaks. Developing a more accurate and reliable system would reduce the
number of false alarms and ensure that real gas leaks are detected quickly and
accurately.

This would improve safety and reduce costs, as false alarms can lead to unnecessary
evacuations and disruptions, while undetected gas leaks can lead to accidents and
property damage.
Here are some of the benefits of developing a more accurate and reliable gas leakage
detection system:

 Improved safety: Early detection of gas leaks can prevent accidents and injuries.
 Reduced costs: False alarms can lead to unnecessary evacuations and
disruptions, which can be costly.
 Peace of mind: Homeowners and businesses can rest assured knowing that their
gas leakage detection system is accurate and reliable.

Researchers are working on developing new technologies for gas leakage detection,
such as:

 Optical gas sensors: These sensors are more accurate and less susceptible to
false alarms than traditional gas sensors.
 Machine learning: Machine learning algorithms can be used to analyse sensor
data and identify patterns that may indicate a gas leak.
 IoT integration: Gas leakage detection systems can be integrated with other IoT
devices to provide a more comprehensive and intelligent solution.

These new technologies have the potential to revolutionize gas leakage detection,
making it more accurate, reliable, and affordable.

5.3 Relay Module

Fig:3 Relay Module

A relay module is a device that uses an electrical signal to control a larger current. It is a type of
switch that can be used to turn on and off devices such as lights, motors, and solenoids. Relay
modules are often used in home automation systems and other applications where it is necessary to
control high-power devices with a low-power signal

There are a number of benefits to using relay modules, including:

 Isolation: Relay modules provide isolation between the signal and the load. This means that
the signal and the load can be at different voltages, which can help to protect the
microcontroller or other device that is controlling the relay module.
 Amplification: Relay modules can amplify a small signal to control a larger load. This is
useful for applications where it is necessary to control a high-power device with a low-
power signal.
 Versatility: Relay modules can be used to control a variety of different types of
loads, including lights, motors, and solenoids. This makes them versatile devices that can be
used in a wide range of applications
5.4 Ultrasonic Sensor

Fig: 4 Ultrasonic Sensor

• Ultrasonic sensors are devices that use high-frequency sound waves to measure distance,
detect objects, and map environments. They work by emitting a burst of ultrasonic sound
waves and then measuring the time it takes for the waves to return to the sensor after
reflecting off of an object. The distance to the object can then be calculated based on the
speed of sound and the time delay
• Range: The range of the sensor is the maximum distance that it can measure. The range of
ultrasonic sensors for water tanks typically ranges from 2 meters to 50 meters.
• Accuracy: The accuracy of the sensor is the difference between the measured level and the
actual level of water in the tank. The accuracy of ultrasonic sensors for water tanks
typically ranges from ±1% to ±3%.The operating frequency is the frequency of the
ultrasonic sound waves that the sensor emits. Typical operating frequencies for ultrasonic
sensors range from 20 kHz to 40 kHz.
• Output: Ultrasonic sensors for water tanks typically have an analog or digital output.
Analog output is a voltage signal that is proportional to the level of water in the tank.
Digital output is a digital signal that indicates the level of water in the tank in a specific
format, such as I2C or SPI.
• The power supply is the voltage that the ultrasonic sensor requires to operate. Typical
power supplies for ultrasonic sensors range from 3.3 V to 5 V.
5.5 MQ2 Gas Sensor

Fig: 5 MQ2 Gas Sensor

• The MQ2 gas sensor is a metal oxide semiconductor (MOS) sensor that is used to detect
the presence of combustible gases, such as methane, propane, butane, and hydrogen. It
is a low-cost and easy-to-use sensor that is commonly used in gas leak detection
systems, air quality monitoring systems, and other safety application
• The MQ2 gas sensor works by detecting the change in conductivity of a sensing
element when it is exposed to a target gas. The sensing element is made of a metal
oxide semiconductor material that is coated with a catalytic layer. When the target gas
comes into contact with the sensing element, it reacts with the catalytic layer and
releases electrons. This increases the conductivity of the sensing element. The MQ-2
gas sensor works by detecting a change in electrical conductivity of the tin dioxide
(SnO2) semiconductor material
• The MQ-2 gas sensor is a relatively low-cost sensor and is easy to use. It can be
connected to a microcontroller or other device using a simple analog signal.
• The MQ2 gas sensor is typically used in a circuit with a load resistor and a voltage
divider. The change in conductivity of the sensing element causes a change in the
voltage across the load resistor. This change in voltage can be detected by a
microcontroller or other electronic device
• The MQ2 gas sensor is a versatile and reliable sensor that can be used in a variety of
applications. It is particularly well-suited for detecting combustible gases, but it can also
be used to detect other types of gases, such as alcohol and carbon monoxide
5.6 Led Display

Fig: 6 16x2 LED Display

• A device that uses light-emitting diodes (LEDs) to display images, text, and other visual
information.
• LEDs are small, energy-efficient, and long-lasting, making them ideal for display
applications.
• LED displays are available in a variety of sizes and resolutions, and can be used for
indoor and outdoor applications.
• Common applications for LED displays include digital signage, advertising, event
displays, and scoreboards

5.7 Servomotor

Fig: 7 Servomotor
• Servo motors are used to control gas regulators during gas leakage to quickly and safely
shut off the gas supply. They are also used to indicate the presence of a gas leak by moving
to a specific position.
• When selecting a servo motor for this application, it is important to consider the following
specifications:
• Torque: The torque of the servo motor must be sufficient to overcome the resistance of the
gas regulator valve. The torque required will vary depending on the type and size of the gas
regulator valve.
• Speed: The speed of the servo motor must be fast enough to shut off the gas supply before a
dangerous amount of gas can leak. Servo motors typically have speeds of 60°/s to 240°/s.
• Angle of rotation: The servo motor must have an angle of rotation that is sufficient to move
the gas regulator valve from the open to the closed position. Servo motors typically have
angles of rotation of 90° to 180°.
• Duty cycle: The duty cycle of the servo motor is the percentage of time that it can operate at
its rated torque and speed. Servo motors for gas regulator control should have a duty cycle
of at least 25%.
• Environmental rating: The servo motor must have an environmental rating that is suitable
for the environment in which it will be used. Servo motors for gas regulator control should
have an environmental rating of IP65 or higher
• A servomotor is a rotary actuator that can be precisely positioned. It is controlled by a
pulse-width modulated (PWM) signal, which determines the angle of rotation of the shaft
• Servomotors typically operate on a voltage of 5V or 12V.
• The current consumption of a servomotor depends on the size and torque rating of the
motor. Typical current consumption ranges from 100mA to 1A.

6. SOFTWARE USED

Proteus 8

Proteus is a proprietary software tool suite used for electronic design automation. It is a
Windows application for schematic capture, simulation, and printed circuit board (PCB)
layout design. It is used by electronic design engineers and technicians to create schematics
and electronic prints for manufacturing printed circuit board

Arduino IDE

Arduino IDE is a free and open-source integrated development environment (IDE) for
electronics projects. It is written in Java and is available for Windows, macOS, and Linux.
Arduino IDE is used to write and upload programs to Arduino boards, which are small,
microcontroller-based boards that can be used to create a wide variety of electronic
devices. Arduino IDE includes a text editor for writing code, a message area, a text
console, a toolbar with buttons for common functions, and a series of menus. It also
includes a built-in compiler and linker, which are used to convert the code into a binary
format that can be executed by the Arduino board.

MIT App Inventor

MIT App Inventor is a web-based visual programming environment that allows anyone to
create mobile apps for Android devices. It is developed by the Massachusetts Institute of
Technology (MIT) and is free to use. App Inventor uses a drag-and-drop interface to create
apps, which means that no prior programming experience is required. Users can create apps
by selecting components from a library and dragging them onto a canvas. The components
can then be configured by setting properties and adding blocks of code)

7. METHODOLOGY

1. Block diagram

Fig: 8 Block Diagram of Home Automation

2. Working

 A voice-controlled home automation system with gas leakage detection and water level
control can be controlled using the MIT App Inventor platform. The app allows users to
control their home appliances using voice commands.
 The app uses the Bluetooth module HC-05 to communicate with the Arduino Uno. The user
can speak voice commands into the app, which are then converted to text and sent to the
Arduino Uno. The Arduino Uno then decodes the text and determines the appropriate action
to take
 When the user makes a voice command on the app, the receiver of the Bluetooth module
HC-05 receives it and sends it to the transmitter of the Arduino Uno. The Arduino Uno is
the main controller of the system. It receives voice commands from the user through the
Bluetooth module and sends a signal to the relay module to control the home appliances.
 Since the Arduino Uno is a low-voltage device, it cannot directly control high-voltage
devices such as lights and motors. Relay modules act as an intermediary between the
Arduino Uno and the high-voltage devices, allowing the Arduino Uno to control them
safely
 The Arduino Uno also uses the MQ2 gas sensor to monitor for gas leaks. If the gas sensor
detects a gas leak, the Arduino Uno will send a signal to the relay module to activate the
exhaust fan and servomotor to turn off the gas regulator. This helps to prevent the gas from
spreading and causing harm
 The Arduino Uno also uses the ultrasonic sensor to monitor the water level in the tank. If
the water level drops below a certain level, the Arduino Uno will send a signal to the relay
module to turn on the water pump. When the water level reaches the desired level, the
Arduino Uno will turn off the water pump
 The LED display provides visual feedback to the user on the status of the system. For
example, the LED display can show the current gas leakage status, water level, and whether
the gas valve or water valve is ON or OFF
8. Objectives Accomplished

Fig 9: Simulation Circuit

Successfully implemented the core functionality of our project which involves smart voice control
of load, gas leakage detection and water level control on proteus software

The core functionality of the system is as follows:

 Smart voice control of load: The system can be controlled using voice commands. The user
can speak a voice command into a smartphone app, which is then transmitted to the system
via Bluetooth. The system decodes the voice command and turns on or off the appropriate
load (e.g., light, motor, pump).
 Gas leakage detection: The system can detect gas leaks in the air. The gas sensor detects the
presence of gas and sends a signal to the system. The system then turns off the gas supply to
prevent a fire or explosion.
 Water level control: The system can maintain the water level in a tank at a desired
level. The ultrasonic sensor measures the water level in the tank and sends a signal to the
system. The system then turns on or off the water pump to maintain the desired water level
Fig 10: App Interface

We has successfully developed an app using MIT App Inventor to allows users to voice control
loads through their smartphone. The app communicates with the microcontroller in the circuit via
Bluetooth. The microcontroller then controls the load based on the commands received from the
app.

This app could be used to control a variety of loads in a home or business. For example, it could be
used to turn on and off lights, adjust the thermostat, or control irrigation systems. It could also be
used to control more complex systems, such as security systems and factory automation systems.

Currently the app can only be used for controlling light through voice commands and we are
working on to extend its functionality

Once the system is fully developed and tested, it can be deployed in real-world homes and
businesses

11.Objectives Needs to be Accomplished

The system currently detects gas leaks . However, the exhaust fan has not yet been
implemented to automatically turn on when gas leakage is detected. This is a planned feature,
and will be implemented in the next phase of development

The system currently detects gas leaks. However, the code has not yet been modified to
automatically turn on the exhaust fan and close the gas regulator when gas leakage is detected.
This is a planned feature, and will be implemented in the next phase of development

Once the hardware implementation is complete, it is important to test the system to make sure
that it is working properly. The following steps can be used to test the system:

smartphone app. Once the module is paired, send a voice command to the app and verify
that the Arduino Uno responds accordingly.
2. Test the relay modules: Make sure that the relay modules are working properly by
connecting them to a load and turning them on and off using the Arduino Uno.
3. Test the MQ2 gas sensor: Place the gas sensor in an area where there is no gas leakage. The
sensor should output a low voltage. Then, expose the sensor to a small amount of gas. The
sensor should output a high voltage.
4. Test the ultrasonic sensor: Place the ultrasonic sensor in front of an object and measure the
distance to the object using the Arduino Uno.
5. Test the LED display: Display a message on the LED display using the Arduino Uno.
6. Test the exhaust fan and gas regulator: Make sure that the exhaust fan and gas regulator
turn on and off when the Arduino Uno sends the appropriate signal.
7. Test the overall system: Test the overall system by sending voice commands to the app and
verifying that the system responds accordingly.
12.Result and Conclusions

Our project on home automation with gas detection and water level control has the potential to
make homes safer and more convenient. The system can detect gas leaks and water level changes
early on, which can help to prevent accidents and costly damage. The system can also be used to
control smart home devices, such as lights and thermostats, which can make homes more energy-
efficient and comfortable.

One of the key benefits of our system is that it is integrated with IoT platforms. This allows users
to collect and store data from the system's sensors, and to send alerts and control devices remotely.
This makes the system more flexible and scalable than traditional home automation systems.

The future scope of our project is broad. One area for future work is to develop new and improved
sensors for gas detection and water level control. Another area for future work is to develop more
sophisticated machine learning and statistical algorithms for gas detection and water level control.
Additionally, we plan to develop new features for the system, such as anomaly detection and
predictive maintenance. We also plan to make the system more affordable and accessible to people
in developing countries and to people who live in off-grid home
